OUR RETURN TO LATEST INFORMATION FOR THE FALL RENTRY FOR CAMPUS PORTLEDGE SCHOOL AS OF JUNE 1, 2020 (BASIC ORGANIZATIONAL MODEL) FALL 2020
BACK TO CAMPUS While the return to school in September is still very much in flux, the following document has TASK FORCE been created to provide a basic framework of all scenario planning by Portledge. Portledge School has established a ENROLLMENT FINANCIAL Back to Campus Task Force, which AND SUSTAINABILITY is working diligently to coordinate DEVELOPMENT our return to our physical site. The key to the success of this planning, in a complex and rapidly changing landscape, has been helped by the willingness of all SUMMER AND Back to CAMPUS constituencies to be flexible and AUXILIARY Campus Task SAFETY PROGRAMS to share constructive criticism and Force critical information. There are many components and sub committees that feed into the STUDENT AND work of the task force, as shown in FACULTY WORKFORCE the adjacent diagram. EXPERIENCE

04 | RE-ENTRY PLAN 2020 BACK TO CAMPUS ONBOARDING While many questions remain unanswered, and Based on what we know at this time we are most the plan to return will inevitably change as we focused on scenario #3, as we believe it is most respond to new government directives, it will probable though any of the others are also remain fundamentally driven by the health and possible. wellbeing of all of our constituents. In order to physically open the campus, the Our hope is to return to campus this fall. A hybrid version of 1 & 2, which would offer a combination of both on-campus and at-home instruction. 4. Online instruction is in place for the entire 2020-2021 school year.
05 | RE-ENTRY PLAN 2020 WHAT WILL "BACK TO CAMPUS" LOOK LIKE? If NY State allows school to physically open, we will resume operating as normally as possible within the framework of our new Campus Safety Plan (to be shared with all constituents later this summer). We will hopefully be able to make the final decision about which scenario we are all operating under early in the summer. Our Safety Plan will be in accordance with all district, local, state, and national requirements, and the specifics will be published no later than August 10th. What follows are a general sense of what campus life may look like during the 2020- 2021 school year. Schedule: Drop off and pick up times may need to be adjusted to reduce crowding during these times, or students may attend school some days of the week and not on others. The idea is that in the short run, we need to focus on maximizing the physical distance between students as well as faculty and staff on campus. Staggering campus use is the best way to keep everyone safe. Campus Configuration: We are exploring renting multiple tents and mobile classroom units with a view to maximizing space. These units would be spread out over the fields and campus (with significant space being allotted to potential outside classroom usage and athletic and physical education). Extra facilities could provide additional health-related spaces, study hall or child care areas, wash stations, etc. Pedestrian Flow: Organizing movement around campus (i.e., use of stairwells and hallways) will minimize pedestrian movement between classes as well as likely restrict the number of visitors to campus, etc. Athletics: Decisions in this area will be determined by the recommendations of NYSAIS and state regulators. Preserving some form of organized physical activity is essential to the wellbeing of all. Everything will be done to provide opportunities for athletics and exercise as attention to health and wellness remains a priority.
06 | RE-ENTRY PLAN 2020 Extended Day: We will likely be offering after the school is currently investing in sophisticated school care and extended day activities for 360-degree camera technology for each of our students in grades EC - 8th. Some physical classrooms. This 'owl' technology will allow us to spaces (tents) will be used to house students simultaneously broadcast classes in real-time at who may be delayed returning home due to home as they are happening at school. The model potential interruptions in transportation and bus allows for synchronous (live real-time instruction) services. for all students. Other important considerations within this model include the following: Other Safety Considerations: Our Campus Safety Plan will expand in detail in other protocols Transportation concerns such as: School/Life Balance Health and Wellness initiatives with a focus on Increased signage to promote physical mindfulness distancing and other new health driven Coordination and communication between behaviors faculty and students Hygienic practices for all including food Sufficient space on campus for students who services, wash stations, restroom usage, etc must physically attend school due to individual Utilizing engineering controls (physical or family circumstances plexiglass classroom barriers) Physical distancing requirements and Students who remain home during this period of managed use of shared spaces hybrid learning must be legally able to do so in an Potential health screening (temperature unsupervised manner, should have a demonstrated checks, etc.) academic/social maturity and be capable of Protective equipment (such as masks, visors, working productively somewhat independently. gloves, etc.) Recommendations from Division Directors may be Cleaning protocols, etc. required in this 'opt-in' type scenario. Hybrid Learning: We are planning for the possibility that even when campus initially re- opens external factors may prevent some community members (faculty or students) from coming to campus. Examples of these external factors may be: Disruption to the school bus transportation system Preexisting or immune-compromised individuals unable/unwilling to return to campus until a vaccine is available Local authorities and regulations require that we set limits on the number of people who can be on campus at a given time. In this scenario, there may be groups of students at home and at school simultaneously. To meet the needs of all students and teachers,
08 | RETURN TO CAMPUS 2020 IF NY ON PAUSE CONTINUES OR DURING TEMPORARY PHYSICAL CLOSURE If we are prevented from returning back to campus, we will continue with our current methods of online instruction with some significant improvements (as referenced earlier): Teachers will undergo deeper training and professional development over the summer in online course design, distance learning, assessment, homework, screen time, etc. Health and Wellness opportunities will be expanded Our schedule will be reviewed and potentially modified A combination of synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (pre-recorded) instruction will continue, and our curricular goals will remain unchanged. Each child will receive a year's worth of learning and instruction (whether part of that experience is online for a period of time or on- campus) and be ready to move to their next grade level. Even if we return to campus, we know that individual schools may have to close if DIGITAL PLATFORMS required to do so by the Department of Health. If this occurs, student accounts will be credited Zoom: We will likely continue with this as our for missed lunches during the period of the learning delivery platform for 5th -12th grade temporary closure. Any changes in system for this age group. this regard will be communicated to the community in a timely fashion. Classwork: We will likely incorporate this software, which houses all student information in one place. myPortledge: Our own portal will remain a critical source of information.
