KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES Week ending : 7th January 2022 Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly newsletter. Welcome to the first newsletter of 2022 and Happy New Year. Firstly, thank you to all parents and carers who ensured their child undertook and uploaded their COVID-19 Lateral Flow result on the www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result website and also onto their Year Group Google Classroom page. I would like to thank everyone who emailed enquiries@ceciljones.net confirming if a child/children had tested positive over the Christmas break and would not be able to attend school on Tuesday 4th January, as this allowed staff to upload work as quickly as possi- ble onto Google Classroom. Secondly, Tuesday and Thursday, students whose parents/carers had consented, were tested in school for COVID-19. I would like to thank all our students for their support with ensuring the testing process ran so smoothly and we were able to ensure minimal disruption to learning time. However, with the new Omicron variant so prevalent in our local area, it is vital that stu- dents continue to test on a regular basis, upload their result to the www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result and on their year group Google Classroom page. If your child tests positive, then you must follow the information that is sent in a text/email by NHS Test and Trace as the guidance is changing on a regular basis. Once again, if your child runs out of the home test kits, then please ask them to go to the school office to collect a new box. Finally, Free School Meals – parents are strongly encouraged to register for Universal Free School Meals. If you have a child/ children in years 7 – 13, and you are eligible for free school meals, you are advised to make an application to the Southend-on- Sea Local Authority. The school offers a cashless service, so any free school meal allowance is automatically applied to a child’s account on a daily basis. Please use the link below to see if you are eligible for Free School Meals. This link can also be found here on our school web- site or via the Local Authority page: https://www.southend.gov.uk/help-costs/free-school-meals-1 Mr. Micek, Executive Headteacher Cecil Jones Academy, Eastern Avenue, Southend on Sea. Exciting visit to the Old Vic Theatre London On Tuesday 4th January, the English department organised for KS3 and KS4 students to attend The Old Vic Theatre in London’s Waterloo to watch a performance of Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’. We travelled by coach and sat in the stalls and stage stalls. The performance was fantastic and the immersive elements were very entertaining. We particularly enjoyed getting snowed on and passing the ingredients for the Christmas dinner up onto the stage. Lucie Clarkson I really enjoyed the flickering lanterns and the magical snow. The audience participation was unexpected and entertaining! My favourite performance was by Tiny Tim. Molly Smith On Tuesday 4th January, we enjoyed a fantastic day out to The Old Vic theatre to watch ‘A Christmas Carol’. We left at approximately 10:30am and seeing the landmarks in London made us all shocked as we were so close. When we arrived, it was raining – typical English weather! My favourite part was the scene with the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Harley McAllister Once the interval finished, we were introduced to Brenda, the Ghost of Christmas Present, which was very funny. In the final scenes they released ‘snow’, it was foam! They got the audience to help make the Christmas dinner for the Cratchit family. Exciting news from Photography Cecil Jones Academy is fortunate to have one of the few working darkrooms in a secondary school setting and our Year 12s have been experimenting! Students have taken home 35mm manual cameras to capture photographs to be hand-developed and enlarged right here at the academy. Unlike a digital camera where you are able to instantly see your image, our students will learn to spool 35mm black and white film onto the developing reel to chemically develop their own film. After this, they will learn how to enlarge their negatives onto paper– just like those old detective movies (red light and everything)! Some of our Year 11 students have also had the chance to experiment with alternative processes. Natasha and PK are using Lomography to experiment with colour and film. With all of these processes, patience is key! The developing process alone can take up to one hour– and that does not include drying time. An example of a lomographic image

Year 10 Google Classroom – Weird Words, Funny Facts and Bad Jokes! The Year 10 Google classroom is not only a place for providing information and support, but also a platform for Mrs Wardle to share her weird word, funny fact and bad joke of the week! To give you a taste of what year 10 have enjoyed…. WEIRD WORD! Blenky Forget a smattering of snow – what about a blenky? The long-forgotten word means “to snow sparingly” and is probably derived from blenks, an 18th century word for ashes or cinders. The light snow resembles the blenks or ashes that can fly out of a chimney and settle on the ground. FUNNY FACT ! Human teeth are the only part of the body that cannot heal themselves. Teeth are coated in enamel which is not a living tissue. BAD JOKE!! I've bought my Daughter a fridge for Christmas....... I can't wait to see her face light up when she opens it............!!!!! Uniform Reminder Please can all parents/carers and students note that, as stated in our Code of Conduct in the student planner and on the website, we do not allow any jewellery to be worn in school, this includes facial piercings of the nose, lip and tongue as well as earrings of any kind. Clear studs are also not allowed and will need to be removed on your arrival to school. Confiscated items will be held securely in the school safe until they are collected by the student on a Friday after school. However, if an item is confiscated on a Friday this will be returned the following Friday after school. False nails and false eyelashes are also forbidden in school and will need to be removed. Failure to follow these standards will result in a sanction. Thank you for your cooperation.
