Homer Community School’s A Student Publication KnightWriter March 2021 TeamMates Coordinator Katie Mueller by Logan Schreier TeamMates Program Coordinator Katie Mueller is an elementary teacher at Homer School. She says that TeamMates is a youth mentoring program in which a student (grades 3-12) is matched with an adult mentor. The match meets weekly at school to play a board game, shoot hoops, do a craft, or just talk about life. The purpose of the program is to inspire youth to reach their full potential by consistently having a lis- tening ear and a positive role model. TeamMates of Homer began in September 2019. As of February 2021, 45 matches have been made, which means 90 people are involved. TeamMates is governed by board mem- bers and a Program Coordinator. Any money TeamMates raises goes to the activity cabinet for matches to choose from, as well as events TeamMates hosts for matches throughout the year. TeamMates of Homer has a waiting list of students looking for a mentor. Trainings for possi- ble mentors are held throughout the school year. Interested adults should email katiemueller@homerknights.org to find out their next steps. The goal is always to match as many kids with positive adults as possible. Many current mentors have noted that it benefits them just as much as the kid. “Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.” –John C. With 10 games under their wings the top scoring players where Rylie Harris with 133 points, Ali Al- brecht with 72 points and Tori Walker with 52 points. This year the Junior High Lady Knights had a total of 22 players compared to last year’s 9 players. Coach White is quoted as saying “The big group has been a lot of fun, they are all very disciplined, passionate, energetic, and driven towards success.” Coach White and Coach Olson hold each player to very high standards on and off the court, they have pushed them to be better every day in both academics and basket- ball and were tough on them at times. The girls exceeded their expectations and more. This year they have started some new traditions and hope to continue them with each new year. The family they have created are all fighting to- wards one goal and that is to be the best they can be and always strive towards success. 4
