Teachers deliver Monday July 22nd instruction using the gradual release of responsibility approach. Year 3 Excursion If we visualise gradual release in terms of learning to ride a bike. First the child watches the adult ride a bike, which parallels Monday July 22nd – Friday the teacher’s doing the activity alone while the students watch. July 26th Student Report Meetings Next the child rides the bike with training wheels, a metaphor for guided reading practice in small groups. Personalised Thursday July 25 coaching and support occurs during this time. Finally, the happy 9.30am Foundation 2020 five-year old sheds the training wheels and cruises down the Information Session street, illustrating how children perform the task independently and apply it to new situations. Friday July 26th Our instructional model moves from the teacher demonstrating Parent Forum a strategy to the students applying the strategy on their own.

Philip Fox Principal Year One’s CERES Excursion By 1B On Monday the 24th of June all Year One grades went to CERES environmental park to continue learning about the weather and how it impacts nature and living things. CERES is a sustainability centre that is along the Merri Creek in East Brunswick. At CERES we did three different activities: First, we went on a garden exploration through the CERES farm. We learned that CERES grow organic vegetables and sell them to the community in their market space. We talked about which vegetables and fruit grow in the different seasons. We did a garden treasure hunt in the CERES vegetable farm. We searched for green leaves, brown leaves, water, soil, ants, flowers, snails, chickens, clouds and butterflies. We also, went through the maze of community garden plots. We saw some chickens and one chicken picked at Abbie’s rainbow gumboots! Next, we went to the pond to be Fresh Water Zoologists! We used nets to catch living freshwater creatures. The pond was covered in Duck Weed which made it difficult to see what was in the water. After trying very hard we found two tadpoles. We named them Taddy and Ninja. Some students got a very close look at the pond
Finally, we were meteorologists and made some advanced weather observations. We learned that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. In the middle of the day in winter the sun will be in the north. We experimented with different ways to work out the direction of the wind. One simple way that worked well was dropping leaves from a height and watching which directing they fall towards. If they fell towards the west, we knew the wind was blowing from the east. We also created some nature art. We had a wonderful time at CERES and we think it would be a great place to visit on the holidays. Garden Club News Our parent-run garden club runs every fortnight at lunchtimes. Children of all grades come along – some because they heard the announcement while they were eating lunch, and others happen to be walking past and want to join in on the action. The last few months in the garden have been busy (as it always is at the changeover of the seasons). In our lovely sunny spot between the Greenwood Building and the portables, summer vegetables seem to last a long, long time, but eventually we had to decide to pull them up. We’ve weeded and filled the compost bins, planted carrots, leeks and kohlrabi seedlings, scattered seeds, and now planted garlic, broccoli and cabbages. One of the best tasks of all is harvesting the Jerusalem artichokes – like digging for treasure. The kids filled a wheelbarrow amid squeals and excitement. We sold them to the school community as a fundraiser, along with our crop of sweet potatoes. Did you see those sweet potatoes? We grew white and orange ones, and some were truly gigantic (we also learnt that the leaves are fantastic steamed or stir-fried). The sweet potatoes were quickly snapped up to become a lot of delicious dinners! Do you like to garden, or are you looking for a fun way to get involved at school? Garden Club currently operates with a small number of parents and it would be wonderful for others to join in. Please email rachel@fruitfulkitchen.com.au
