Overview of Visit Occasionally during the lifecycle of a ship, the crew of the ship is funded to visit their namesake. The crew of PCU Cincinnati have received backing from the Navy to visit Cincinnati during the historic 100th Findlay Market Parade for the 150th Reds Opening Day. The USS Cincinnati Commissioning Committee has worked to coordinate a schedule for the crew while they are in town in order to allow them the most optimal opportunities for engaging with the city. The float made in the image of the ship will be the highlight of the visit. (Note: PCU means pre-commissioning unit and refers to the official name of the ship prior to commissioning. Upon commissioning, the name will change to USS Cincinnati.) * I do not have permissions to coordinate interview with the crew. I only have permission to coordinate interviews with members of the Commissioning Foundation. A Littoral Combat Ship, or LCS, is a fast, agile, mission-focused platform designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation. It is designed to defeat asymmetric “anti-access” threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast-surface craft. This tri-hull “Independence” variant is the 20th ship of the class and is powered by two LM2500 gas turbine engines built by GE Aviation. In fact, Cincinnati’s own GE Aviation builds the engines for every ship in the class and has delivered gas turbines on board 646 naval ships serving 35 navies worldwide. These ships represent the next generation of Navy combatants with modular mission payloads, high speed, and automation enabled shipboard operation. The USS Cincinnati Commissioning Foundation was created in order to link the city of Cincinnati with her fifth namesake ship. The USS Cincinnati (LCS 20) is scheduled to commission in late 2019 and the foundation will fund several events surrounding the commissioning and a scholarship fund. The foundation scholarship will support immediate family members of the crew as one mechanism for providing greater education opportunities. This annually-awarded scholarship will also ensure a long-standing relationship between the crew and the Queen City.
