Introduction and Purpose As Term 2 commences, Xavier College forges forward with our commitment to provide high quality Catholic education in the Salesian tradition to ensure our students can continue on their learning pathway amid the challenges of COVID-19. We know and fully support that student safety and family circumstances will mean students may either attend school onsite or engage from home as we start Term 2. It is one of our foremost priorities that no student should experience disadvantage at this time, and our teachers are working tirelessly to support student's learning and assessment in new and authentic ways. Our Pastoral care program will continue to support students to maintain close relationships with our school and no doubt our Oratory teachers have been in touch with you recently. As we continue to provide online learning, we are committed to monitoring and tracking student engagement and progress. Following are some key points in relation to our start for Term 2. Student Learning Process - Oratory and Subjects All students, whether learning physically at school or at home will follow the same learning process. The normal school timetable will be followed by both subject teachers and students, whether working from home or school. At the beginning of each week students will access an email from their oratory/subject teacher which outlines the learning activities for the week. This is also available in the SEQTA Engage Homework section for parents and caregivers to access. At the start of each timetabled lesson, the student will engage in learning with their subject teacher and class via SEQTA Forums or Microsoft Teams (from week 2) if learning off-site, or face-to-face if on-site. This will provide opportunities for students to ask clarifying questions and engage in class discussions and for their subject teachers to provide instruction. 3
Students can then use the remainder of the allocated class time and homework time to work on the learning activities provided in myEdOnline. For any further questions arising, students can post to the SEQTA Forum for support from their teacher and peers. Teachers will monitor student attendance and engagement via the online learning platforms. Parents will receive an email from the oratory teacher each week summarising student attendance and engagement. Attendance Students are expected to engage in online learning either from home or at school. Teachers will take attendance at the start of each timetabled lesson and record students who are present in class and students who are engaged online (recorded as learning at home). Consistent with current procedures parents/guardians will be notified of students who are ‘absent’ (not present at school or online) via SMS. If a student is unable to attend at school or engage online, then parents should contact the office absentee line on 8521 4537 as normal. Online Learning Platforms SEQTA SEQTA will be used as our primary learner management system for attendance, curriculum planning and assessment. Parents/caregivers and students will be able to get up to date information about student’s timetables, course outlines, weekly learning intentions (visible via homework on the dashboard) and assessment results. Additionally, teachers have created forums within SEQTA for each of their classes where students are able to post questions and engage in discussion threads with peers and their teachers. 4
myEdOnline myEdOnline will be integrated within SEQTA as the main teaching and learning platform where teachers create and sequence learning activities and resources to track student progress. Every lesson, students will access myEdOnline, select their timetabled subject, and undertake the allocated learning path where they will access content, engage with learning activities and receive teacher feedback. Microsoft Teams Microsoft Teams will be used to ensure we continue to maintain effective relationships with both our on-site and off-site students. Teachers will schedule meetings with their classes according to the regular subject timetable to conduct online conferencing. This will enable teachers to connect regularly with students through audio and video, provide explicit instruction and respond to student queries. Students will receive invitations to these meetings via email and will be expected to engage in each meeting when present at school and learning remotely. Wellbeing As students move towards online learning, it is important that they are making positive choices in supporting their mental health and wellbeing. This includes having regular brain breaks and engaging in physical activity throughout the day. Below is a list of strategies for students to engage with to improve mental health and wellbeing. 1. School Based Learning/Academics: Students engage in the school curriculum. 5
2. Physical Activity: Students need to engage in physical activity throughout the day and spend a portion of this time outside in the fresh air. 3. Relaxation/Enjoyable Activities: The point of these activities is not about the end product, but the process and the impact on emotional wellbeing. 4. Social Connection: This is difficult during social distancing recommendations but still crucial for an adolescent to feel a sense of connection and belonging to others in their family, friendship networks and wider community. Daily Routines Students need a learning space that is conducive to learning; that is, a space that provides effective lighting and ventilation; access to a desk or table that provides an effective space for devices, books, and other resources; and a comfortable chair (preferably adjustable) that facilitates healthy body posture And comfort. Additionally, it should be away from any distractions if possible. Students should: • Wake up with enough time to get ready and have breakfast before class begins • Prepare and gather all resources for the day before logging on at 8.45am • Be appropriately dressed • As always be respectful and polite in communications • Have a water bottle handy • During breaks, stretch and get some fresh air • Keep away from screens during break times 6
Online Counselling Services Whilst it may not be possible to catch up in person, the College’s counsellors will still be providing their services to all students. If students require access to a counsellor whilst they are off-site and: a) if the student is already engaged in counselling at Xavier College, they can contact their counsellor via email to request an appointment time. b) if the student has never seen a counsellor previously at Xavier College, the student or parent should contact the House Director- Pastoral Care, who will arrange an appointment. All counselling sessions where students are at home will be done via phone and explicit written permission from parents must be given. Digital Citizenship and Safety Online It is important that during this period of online learning that students maintain safe and responsible use of information and communication technologies. This includes appropriate use of digital platforms, privacy and information protection and respectful communication. While it is important that students remain social and connect with their peers, normal family protocols should apply to social media interactions. In all interactions, students should be respectful, show understanding, affection and humour in line with Xavier College expectations. Parents are encouraged to monitor online interactions and follow normal College procedures to gain support with managing inappropriate online behaviour by contacting the Oratory Teacher and/or House Director – Pastoral Care. Interactions online in classroom forums and conferences must be relevant to the content and focus of the class. We recommend that parents and students take the time to discuss being a good digital citizen. Support for Parents/Caregivers In addition to weekly engagement emails and regular phone call communication, parents/caregivers and teachers should continue to communicate through regular school processes. The Oratory teacher will remain your first port of call. • We encourage parents/caregivers to continue to use SEQTA Engage to access up to date information in relation to your child’s progress. • Young people learn best when in a routine. Students learning off-site should be encouraged to follow their regular school timetable including breaks for activity, eating and drinking. • We encourage parents/caregivers to start and finish each day with a simple check-in. In the morning, ask: • What subjects do you have today? • What are your learning activities on myEdOnline? • Do you have any Microsoft Teams meetings scheduled for today? In the afternoon, ask: • What did you learn today? • What did you find challenging? • Are you up to date with myEdOnline? • Do you need help with something to make tomorrow more successful? • Have you posted your question to SEQTA forums? 8
