Dedication that goes beyond banking during the COVID-19 crisis Winners of the Euromoney 2020 Excellence in Leadership in Africa Award We are humbled to announce that our commitment to putting our people, our clients and our communities first during the COVID-19 pandemic has been recognized through our Corporate and Investment Banking Initiatives. That’s Africanacity. That’s Absa. Absa.co.zm Absa Bank Zambia PLC (registered number 119710006444) is regulated by the Bank of Zambia. 2 In-flight Magazine | Oct - Nov 2020
AFRICANACITY A new word for a longstanding attitude A celebration of Africa’s ability to turn every challenge into an opportunity There is a spirit across the continent that is unmatched elsewhere. It is largely unspoken, a feeling and way of thinking that allows us to say with the greatest of confidence that Africa’s future is bright and that we can do anything we set our minds to. All too often, news headlines dwell on Africa’s macro challenges, overlooking its track record of creative, ingenious and often unique, home-grown solutions to problems. While Africa’s challenges remain true, we also have a remarkable ability to overcome obstacles in ingenious ways. As a Pan-African Bank committed to the bright future of our continent, Absa is focused on finding solutions. A walk down any bustling African city – from Lagos to Nairobi, Johannesburg to Kampala – quickly reveals that Africa is a continent of doers, always going above and beyond to get things done. More recently, Robert Shimaingo, a fisherman in Zambia, realised that refrigeration problems were hampering his community’s ability to get a fair market price for their fish. Shimaingo’s community did not have a source of electricity and were moving large blocks of ice to the riverside, which quickly melted. A determined Shimaingo designed and built a floating, hydropower river turbine that generates power to refrigerate fish onsite, keeping them fresher for longer, and ultimately increasing his community’s competitiveness at the local market. But Shimaingo went a step further, using the turbine’s excess energy to power the once-powerless fishing village. The Zambian Knitting Movement should serve as an inspiration to the bank and communities across the world: with tonnes of plastic bags polluting drains and roads, the Zambian government has banned plastic bags and their resultant waste. This is an admirable effort, but still leaves the problem of existing plastic bags that have not been properly disposed. This inspired the formation of the Zambian Knitting Movement, which turns such wasted plastic bags into items of use and value with only a few knitting needles and pairs of scissors. Zambians are using a well-established knitting tradition to create a cleaner, less wasteful society. As Absa embarked on one of the continent’s most ambitious corporate rebranding programmes – changing our name from Barclays to Absa – we took a close look at our business, our people, and the people we serve, determined to forge a refreshed, fit-for-purpose bank that had meaning and relevance in the lives of our customers and colleagues. We also looked at our context and our continent for inspiration. What is it that makes Africa unique? What do we do that no one else does? What is our essence, our driving force, and the thing that will unlock our potential? We believe that Africa has a unique way of getting things done, a way that could inspire us as one of the continent’s largest banking and financial services groups. But we didn’t have a word to describe this – so we created one: Africanacity – the distinctly African ability to always find ways to get things done. As an organisation, we are inspired by the spirit of Africanacity, which thrives on turning every challenge into an opportunity. We are inspired by people who challenge traditional ways of thinking. Africanacity is the inspiration behind Absa. In defining this word, we commit to helping people find a way to achieve their goals and to realise their dreams. We believe that everyone needs a financial partner who will help them realise their possibility. From our colleagues and customers, to the continent at large, Africanacity is a call to action for everyone. It’s a defined term to describe a longstanding attitude. It’s what drives and inspires everything Absa believes in, and, above all, it drives the beautiful continent we’re here to serve. Note from the Publisher I t is another special moment in Zambia’s history, as the country celebrates 56 years of decolonization from the British rule on 24th October. Historically, all the Zambians came together 56 years ago in unity under the motto, “one Zambia, one Nation” to gain self- rule. To broaden our knowledge base and also reminiscing on Zambia’s independence, the magazine features an interesting article of the Freedom statue, well-articulated by an able author. As always, this magazine is packed with a lot of up to date, interesting and educative articles. Currently, the World is facing the COVID-19 pandemic, hence this edition carries a number of articles to help navigate through this time. One of them being “Laying the foundation for Resilient Recovery.” At the local level, we also interviewed a few people to gain an insight on how they are navigating around the COVID-19 pandemic. With the disease burden and other challenges of life, people experience pain but it is comforting that we can take lessons from an article in this magazine that talks about the necessity of pain in our lives. Other inspiring stories in this edition you must definitely read are about real people who have made it in life under difficult circumstances, “Darkest Before Dawn” and “Overcoming Drug Addiction”. It seems that some youths of nowadays are determined to be the change that society is yearning for. Ideally you expect a 19 year old girl to busy with her social life, but herein read about Chalanga doing the opposite. She has devoted her life to taking care of orphans under very difficult conditions. Another 19 year old girl is leading in a sport of karate that is mostly male dominated. Kashimiya earned her championship in Windhoek Namibia at The All Africa Full Contact Knockdown Karate on 15th March 2020. There is so much to keep the readers glued. Health is important to all hence the need to always keep educating ourselves on the different health matters that affect us. This time, we tackle the issue of acute low back ache. Not forgetting our young readers, there is an interesting short fictitious story about the magic portion. It is nice when the kids write their own articles for the magazine. I hope we get more kids writing. This magazine takes you everywhere, to the streets, in the Sports Hall and in the kitchen. Today, our lady who believes that food is culture will be cooking with us Chilangamulilo or Matebeto known as Mpampa (polypores) a family of mushroom. This is a delicacy for the Bemba but is slowly being appreciated by many. Oh my goodness, the Bembas would say “twamuli samfwe tatupwa kusala”, it’s never exhaustive! Bon Voyage, enjoy many more exciting articles this magazine has to offer. Always remember to take with you this copy. Take it, it’s a free copy!! Cynthia Belemu 10 In-flight Magazine | Oct - Nov 2020

The H ilarious Shimumbi By Naomi Musala T he hilarious Shimumbi (stage name) recently visited Mahogany Air offices and at first glance, we all, including the Chief Executive Officer burst into laughter. I quickly, offered him a seat, composed myself and got to serious business. Born Aubrey Luo in Lusaka in the family of Seven, Shimumbi has won many people’s hearts due to his comical way of handling his Slay Queen and his supposedly wife Bana Mumbi in the popular Shimumbi TV series. Mr Luo narrated that comedy is an inborn thing, he started entertaining his family at a very tender age but little did they known that he would attain the level of stardom he is enjoying at the moment. Luo started Primary School at Chitukuko Basic in Lusaka`s Mtendere compound. And later qualified to grade eight at Kabulonga Boys. Without hesitation he joined the School drama group. It was in the same drama group that he found legendary comedians late Augustine Lungu and Maximo. As young boys and eager to become entertainers they would walk to Lusaka`s play House to try and get a chance of stage performance with the established comedians though this proved hard without membership fees. This however did not discourage him and others. They made it a habit to loiter at Lusaka Play House each time they knocked off from School hoping one day the opportunity will arise. Luo, an employee of The Zambia National Service (ZNS) is happily married to Angela Tembo and are blessed with three children; A girl and two boys. He is also a proud grandfather of one named Jordan. When asked how he reacts to criticism, Luo was quick to stress that criticism does not weigh him down. Instead he takes time evaluate the critic and forges ahead. Quizzed if he has been criticised before in his performances; Luo recounted one performance when he cracked a joke referring to one particular tribe among the 72 tribes Zambia enjoys. He said he was amazed how people from that specific speaking language reacted, “I have made a number of jokes before refereeing to other tribes but I had never been criticised, anyway this did not frustrate me as it only opened my eyes,’’ he said. Aubrey Luo
Asked why his comedy stunts are burning like fire at the moment, Luo was quick to attribute the development to his natural flow during acting. “ I don’t rehearse much neither do I stress, this is also further compounded by my companions the Slay queen and Bana Mumbi. They are also naturally talented. We flow together as a team; we just make a few guidelines and most action is on camera but find ourselves flowing like a river. We are compatible,” he said. Luo believes that comedy is not about making one`s face ugly or dress scruffy but instead one should be natural. When quizzed how he coined the Bana Mumbi and Slay Queen concept, Luo flashed back on previous comedies, he simply wanted to do comedy in a different way from what has been predominant. Being a married man, how does your wife react to the way you act in romantic situations for instance with the Slay Queen massaging your feet? Luo smiled, scratched his head then said “You know it is good to marry a friend. By this I mean a friend who knows you better. My wife knew me very well before we got married besides we worked together at Mulungushi Conference Center before I joined ZNS. She knows that acting with the Slay Queen Belinda and Bana Mumbi is purely stage performance and she has no hard feelings,”. Aubrey Luo with wife and children However, Luo who never thought that comedy will reach him this far, gets motivated when people ask him to pose for selfies and how at times he has benefited by receiving presents in monetary form from people he doesn’t even know for making them laugh. Nonetheless, Luo does not wish to associate his comedy with Politics. He said he would rather remain a natural performer. Luo also took time to thank his funs and social media for the cardinal role they have played in spearheading his talent and commended the funs to continue supporting him. Navigating Through the Covid-19 Pandemic M y name is Eric Kunda Jr a second year Midwifery student at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University. I am a class representative for the Midwives and current President for the Midwifery Association at Levy Mwananwasa Medical University. COVID-19 has affected me as a student in so many ways. Just to mention a few, e-learning has been a challenge as purchasing internet data bundles is not easy. Understanding some lectures has been a challenge because at times we would not join certain Zoom lectures. Not only that, the notes coming in by lectures are so bulky and topics come without full explanation. Some students in rural areas are unable to take part in lectures. Adapting to the new normal at first was quite challenging because I had the fear of contracting the disease but I am now following all measures by masking up, sanitizing, washing hands and avoiding crowded areas while keeping social distance. Having the ability to fully interact with friends, having a full normal lecture and going for practical’s in hospitals are what I miss most because they make learning easier and more interesting. COVID-19 is real people are dying and it’s not a lie or a joke. Please mask up stay safe, stay home, avoid crowded areas, and most importantly practice hand hygiene and sanitize. M y name is Mulenga Kang’ombe, a Travel consultant by Profession with 21 years’ experience. Our industry helps people travel within and outside the country and all other things that come with it. My work gives me an opportunity to meet people and see places around the world. It also gives me satisfaction. Covid -19 has been a real threat to our industry especially when the government suspended non-essential foreign and domestic travels. Since that announcement we have not been operational resulting in our business being affected highly. Paying of salaries and office rental has been a challenge. Therefore, as a survival measure, I had to think outside the box for other sources of income. I encourage people to consider the importance of side hustle in this trying time. I too miss when we could move freely, travel, socialise with close friends and relatives. We did not have to wear masks. Covid-19 is a deadly disease that has affected, changed my life and the entire world at large. Lastly l would like to urge everyone to adhere to the safety guidelines put in place. 26 In-flight Magazine | Oct - Nov 2020
M y names are Mwape Katembula, I am married, and I have 3 girls. I am a friendly person, I like going out, and visiting places. I Am currently studying bachelor’s in Human Resource Management at NIPA am in my third year second semester. I work for a Tele-communications company and I run a small business on the side. Covid has affected me greatly as a student when it just came in Zambia all schools had to close. I was afraid it would delay and disturb our school calendar because am completing my program in 2021. Fortunately for me, immediately Government announced that all schools were closing, our school already had a system in place called Moodle so there was no closing, but one had to pay 50% of the fees to access Moodle and if one fails to pay there would be no access to learning. I quickly, organized myself to look for funds in order for me to access our Moodle Online Learning Platform. After a few months exams were set in July, I must attest that they were the toughest and most stressful exams I have ever written. They made them in such way that you must think, they were Scenario, case study and problem-solving questions. Our results didn’t take long time to come out because they were online; I thank God to my surprise I passed very well because they were not easy at all. Our second semester started in September, we had to continue with online learning. Virtual classes have its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that one has to learn in the comfort of your home and me being a part time student am now reaching home early rushing home for my Virtual Class, and if I feel am running late I would learn from the office. The best part with online learning is that one can learn from anywhere. The disadvantages are the network it gets so bad at times it’s difficult to connect and join the class or one can hardly get the lecturer when he or she is lecturing, that is frustrating. The bundles too, on top of the school fees we are paying we need to have internet all the time when having class so it’s expensive. Alas been a mother sometimes you have to help with homework for the children and at times when you want to Adapting to the new normal following the laid down guidelines by the government of Zambia, washing hands, sanitizing all the time, working from home, staying home, I only move when it’s necessary. The fact that we must stay home most of the time Iam trying so hard to make it fun for me and my family. We are doing some dance routine videos with my girls, it’s a lot fun. I have taught them games they never knew about, we are bonding more during this period. What I miss about the period before the pandemic is going out, socializing, and my kind of fun is going places, so I was hit really hard when places were closed there was nowhere to go. I miss physical class, the face to face interaction during group discussions. I miss being free, breathing fresh air freely, hugging my friends and family freely not thinking am I too close to the next person did I get it when I went to the mall. I miss my face being free and my makeup showing not the covering of my mouth and nose with a face mask every time am leaving my house. The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is a health crisis that has killed millions of people worldwide, its heart breaking seeing people die they way they have with this pandemic. It’s a socio-economic crisis that has brought about people losing jobs and income, companies are closing. We are just living to survive, with no way of knowing when normality will return. M y names are Gaby Octcha, I was born in Kinshasa in the family of seven. I have six children. I must confess the year 2020 has been the most challenging in my business due to Covid -19. I have been doing business both in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, I am a transporter and I run Pubs in both countries. I have been affected in such a way that my vehicles are all parked as they were running at a loss. My vehicles ferry people from Lubumbashi to Kasumbalesa back and forth. Due to social distancing drivers had to carry few passengers, as a result each trip was making a loss. Also, my pubs both in Zambia and Congo are closed. It has not been easy at all, I can`t wait for when things will get back to normal. www.mahoganyair.com | Oct - Nov 2020 27
