Freeport is a city with a rich and vibrant history. We are the site of the second Lincoln-Douglas debate and, in 2019, the Lincoln National Heritage Area was expanded to include the city of Freeport. This is one of the largest heritage areas in the nation. We are home to many unique businesses that operate in the city, as well as many that have a long E E PO RT manufacturing history. In 2019, we saw roughly $20 TO F R million in investment in Freeport through building permit valuations. Our Stephenson County Historical Society and Museum are very active as they honor and respect the history of Freeport and the county. Freeport is designated as a SolSmart Community and we take our environmental protection seriously. We also have an aggressive recycling program, as well as working closely with the county offices on electronic recycling events. It takes everyone working together, which is just one of the treasures about Freeport. Freeport is a historical community that looks to the future and always strives to move forward! We are not afraid of new concepts, such as combining organizations to form the Greater Freeport Partnership. We embrace collaboration, new ideas, and newcomers to our city! I am excited about Jodi Miller the history we are creating today for future generations. Mayor of Freeport Freeport is a great place to live, work, and play. FREEPORT PROHIBITION CELEBRATION In the early 1900s, Stephenson County was a bustling area with access to Stagecoach lines from Galena to Chicago, seven newspapers (written in both English and German) and a great mix of entrepreneurs and hardworking laborers. With this increase in population and its strong German heritage, it is no surprise that brewing beer was also important to the Stephenson County area. That is until Prohibition went into effect with the eighteenth amendment on January 16, 1919. With the 100-year anniversary of this lifestyle change, Freeport and Stephenson County are calling attention to the roots of our local brewing industry and its affect on those who lived here.
