CIPD Northern Ireland Annual Conference The 2019 CIPD Northern Ireland Conference at the ICC, Belfast on 28 November was a huge success attracting more than 300 delegates, and as such was the CIPD’s biggest ever conference in Northern Ireland. This year’s conference focused on driving fair, meaningful and productive work. Speakers Opening the event, CIPD Membership Director David D’Souza impressed upon delegates the role of HR in creating environments where people feel empowered and can speak out, and the importance of putting good work at the heart of the profession. Angela Peacock, CEO, of PDT Global delivered an excellent keynote on reducing bias in the employee lifecycle and identifying the roadblocks to an inclusive workplace culture, and television presenter Jason Bradbury, delivered a thought- provoking closing session highlighting the many ways that AI and automation are impacting the way we live and work. We were most grateful for the support of a range of expert speakers for our breakout sessions and panel discussions, including speakers from the Northern Ireland Civil Service, Enterprise Holdings, Police Service NI, ACAS, PDT Global, Australia National University, Bank of Ireland, Macmillan Cancer Support, Queen’s University Belfast, Travelex, Nottingham Business School, Deloitte, IBM, Bard Pharmaceuticals, Ulster University CDE Global, and a number of CIPD experts. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to share their expertise. Sponsors and exhibitors We are very grateful to VANRATH who were our headline sponsors for a second consecutive year, to our media sponsor nijobfinder, to The Open University who sponsored our skilled work workstream, and to all our exhibitors for their support.
CIPD NI Awards 2020 We were delighted to kick off the 2020 awards campaign with a winner’s showcase breakfast in November, where previous winners shared the stories behind their entries, and how winning a CIPD NI Award has impacted their organisation. We had an excellent response to this year’s awards, with high-quality entries across all 11 categories, including new categories for HR SME of the Year and External Consultancy, demonstrating the measurable impact that people professionals are having across organisations in the public, private and third sectors in Northern Ireland. Congratulations to everyone who has reached the shortlist. As with so many events, sadly the 2020 CIPD NI Awards, which were due to take place at Titanic Belfast on Thursday 21 May had to be postponed due to the pandemic. The awards ceremony is being replaced by a virtual event which will take place on Thursday 1 October, and we very much hope that as many of you as possible will join us online to find out who this year’s winner are. Look on our social media channels and in our monthly newsletter for details. Sincere thanks to our headline sponsor, MCS Group, to our media sponsor nijobfinder, and to all of our sponsors who are continuing to support the awards.

Read Katie’s blog about the session. LGBT inclusion at work, November We were delighted to co-host a roundtable discussion on LGBT inclusion at work with the Government Equalities Office to find out about the biggest challenges, barriers and opportunities that employers are facing when it comes to improving inclusion for LGBT+ people in work. Many thanks to everyone who attended and shared their experiences, which will help to inform public policy outcomes. Senior leader event, January How artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are shaping the world of work, associated ethical implications, and the role of HR professionals Our new NI branch chair, Beth McMaw Considine, facilitated this event where Lynne Raine and Martin Groom from PwC shared some of PwC’s latest research on what the world of work will look like in 2030, and CIPD’s Ed Houghton presented the latest CIPD research and insights on the role of the profession in 2030. As a follow-up to this event, we were delighted that Ed Houghton also had the opportunity to share some of our views on the challenges that people professionals face in creating the workplace of the future on the PwC NI website. Members have the opportunity to get involved in understanding and shaping the future of the people profession by taking part in the CIPD Hackathon from 10 - 20 August. Find out more.
CIPD NI in the press We have continued to work with the Belfast Telegraph/niobfinder throughout the year. Our Ask the Expert series of Q&A-led features allowed us to showcase our specialist expertise in a variety of areas including recruitment, job applications, contracts of employment, bonuses and incentives, inductions and coaching and mentoring. We’ve also had features in print and online on managing bullying and harrassment in the workplace, the menopause and most recently on planning the return to the workplace post Covid-19. Thanks very much to the Belfast Telegraph/nijobfinder team for all their support. CIPD NI Member Survey Many thanks to everyone who completed our member survey in May. We had an excellent response and the results are already helping us to shape our events programme and our contribution to public policy consultations in Northern Ireland for the coming year. We had strong support for three specialist networks, and are now starting to shape new networks for Organisational Development specialists and independent consultants which will be launched later this year, with a Learning and Development network being planned for 2021. Communication Website and social media and monthly update We are continuing to build our social media following, and have more than 8,500 followers on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, where we keep members up to date with news from Northern Ireland, as well as the latest CIPD national campaigns, news and research. In addition, our monthly newsletter, which reaches more than 4,500 subscribers, provides updates on our events, CIPD reports, blogs, webinars and links to a range of useful resources on the first Tuesday of every month. CIPD NI Webinars Since the lockdown we’ve been running a series of webinars for members in Northern Ireland offering support with employment law and core HR skills. CIPD NI Employment Law Webinar Series In May we launched a series of employment law webinars, delivered by some of Northern Ireland’s top employment lawyers, to help members navigate through some of the new employment law resulting to the pandemic and beyond. Many thanks to Paul Gillen from Pinsent Masons, Louise McAloon from Worthingtons Solicitors and Lisa Bryson from Eversheds Sutherland for delivering the first three sessions. Recordings of these sessions are available via the CIPD NI Website. CIPD Profession Map Workshops on Core Behaviours We’re also running a series of eight interactive workshops on the core behaviours of the New Profession Map, which kicked off in June with a session on ethical practice. CIPD NI Branch The CIPD NI team continues to work closely with the NI branch which provides a programme of learning and networking events and activities, delivered by a team of committed branch volunteers. For many of our members, these events are their main face-to-face contact with the CIPD, and we hugely appreciate the efforts of everyone involved to make these events engaging, welcoming and inclusive. During the past 12 months, the NI branch has hosted events on support for menopausal women at work, a mock tribunal, a panel discussion exploring CIPD’s research unto unethical behaviour in the workplace, and a number of social events. The branch also launched a mentoring programme in January, matching experienced HR practitioners with those starting out in their HR careers. This initiative has been very successful, with the first cohort being filled, and the branch are extending this round until January 2021. Branch volunteers also visited CIPD centres in NI at the start of the 2019/20 academic year to welcome students onto their qualifications and discuss the benefits of CIPD membership. Finally a huge thank you to Lynn Carson, who is retiring as branch chair after a long period of service within the branch, and to everyone on the CIPD NI committee who has been involved with setting up and supporting branch events, and our CIPD NI events and conferences throughout the year. Keep up to date with our branch events in Northern Ireland on our branch website.
