HARDY PLANT SOCIETY OF OREGON’S PATHFINDER’S TOUR TO NORTHERN ENGLAND AND A LITTLE BIT OF SCOTLAND, TOO. June 10 - June 23, 2023 HPSO presents a garden-lovers tour of Northern England. With nearly thirty featured gardens on the itinerary encompassing grand estate gardens, modern contemporary ones, traditional designs, woodland gardens, water gardens, kitchen gardens, walled gardens, sculpture gardens, botanical gardens, and ones over owing with oral abundance, this comprehensive tour is sure to give participants lots of new ideas to take away. Our journey includes visits to the mild southwest Scottish coast, the English Lake District, and the Yorkshire dales. Our lodging also includes a variety of styles, from central city locations, to quaint towns, and a country hotel & spa! We’ll visit some of England’s nest castles and grand houses, too. A Path nder’s tour to Northern England June 10-23, 2023 Day 1 (Sat., June 10): Glasgow D Arrive in Glasgow and proceed to our hotel in the city center. We’ll have the rest of the day at leisure to explore the city. Early arrivals may want to visit the Kibble Palace in the Glasgow Botanic Garden. Stay the night in Glasgow. Join the group for a welcome dinner this evening. Day 2 (Sun., June 11): Gatehouse of Fleet B,D We depart Glasgow this morning and begin our journey south. Our rst visit is to a private garden in Kilmarnock, known for its audacious color schemes particular, we nd plants from South Africa, South along the pond garden - considered by some to be America, and New Zealand thriving here. We’ll one of Scotland’s most spectacular and impressive spend a good part of our day at Logan to explore this garden sights. Culzean Castle First, we visit Castle Kennedy with its gardens created around the ruins of the castle on 75 acres. Next, we visit Glenwhan Gardens, a private 12-acre garden carved out of moorland, featuring exotic plants that love the moist ground. In the mid-a ernoon, we’ll visit a lovely, smaller, private garden in Kirkcudbright followed by a visit, time-permi ing, to Broughton House, the home and garden created in the early twentieth century by painter E.A. Hornel. Gatehouse of Fleet. We enjoy a group dinner this Broughton House is currently managed by the evening at our hotel. We stay here for three nights. National Trust of Scotland. Finally, a er a busy day, we return to our hotel to Day 3 (Mon., June 12): Gatehouse of Fleet B,D relax and enjoy a leisurely dinner as a group. Stay one more night in Gatehouse of Fleet. A er breakfast, we venture to gardens further west along the southwestern coast. Today’s visit are a study of contrasts. Our rst garden, a private residence, is divided into rooms which make the half- acre garden seem larger. Each room is dedicated to a di erent pale e of plants - shade, woodland, semi- hardy, etc. A er our visit here, we continue west to the Rhins of Galloway at the southwestern most tip of Scotland. Located here is the large Logan Botanic Garden, the complementary outstation of the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. A Path nder’s tour to Northern England June 10-23, 2023 Day 11 (Tues., June 20): York B Today we head a bit east of York for our featured visits. We rst stop at Scampston Hall. Our main focus here is the walled garden, over owing with oral impact. We discover other gardens, perhaps more formal in style, hidden by clipped hedges. Next, we visit a smaller private garden set on top of the Yorkshire Wolds. Our nal stop today is the grand house and garden at Castle Howard where we explore the castle and admire the grounds. Return to our hotel in York and spend one last A peacock at Castle Howard 2021, this garden brings the newest design practices into focus on its 154 acres. Built on the site of the former Worsley Hall estate, the gardens features an immense walled garden, welcome pavilions, glasshouses, and so much more!
