Although I did not pursue Scouting beyond the Cub Scout level I am very proud of the fact that Tim, one of our sons, is an Eagle Scout. Having the opportunity to work together with him on his Eagle project was an unforgettable experience made possible only through the unlimited opportunities provided by Scouting." 2018 Media Sponsor
Pat Richter University of Wisconsin Director of Athletics NFL Washington Redskins Vice President of Personnel Oscar Mayer Foods Corp. University of Wisconsin Athletic Department Hall of Fame Rose Bowl Hall of Fame NCAA Silver Anniversary Award Pat Richter completed his 15th and final year leading the athletic department at his alma mater on April 1, 2004. The former all-star student-athlete at Wisconsin rescued the athletic department in the early 1990’s and created a plan for a prosperous future in the new millennium. Richter accepted the position in 1989 and inherited a $2.1 million debt, a downtrodden program on the field, eroding facilities and deteriorating fan support. During his administration the Badgers eliminated the red ink on the financial ledgers and built a $6 million surplus, won on the playing field at levels never experienced previously, built new facilities and renovated crumbling ones, and added three new women’s sports. Richter was responsible for hiring coaching greats, Barry Alvarez, Dick Bennett, and Bo Ryan. Every program flourished during his administration. *Football: 3 Big Ten Championships & 3 Rose Bowls *Men’s Basketball: Big Ten Championships 2002, 2003, 7 NCAA Tournaments, Final Four appearance in 2000 & produced the 3 winningest teams in UW history *Women’s Basketball: 5 NCAA Tournaments, 3 NIT’s, UW school record of 21 wins during 3 different years *Men’s Cross Country: 11 Big Ten Championships & Top 10 national finishes in 13 of 14 seasons *Volleyball: 4 Big Ten Championships, 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, advanced to the national title game in 2000 & established a school record with a 34-3 mark *Men’s Hockey: 9 NCAA Tournament appearances, national title in 1990, NCAA runners-up in 1992 & topped the nation in college hockey attendance every season of his tenure. Additionally, Pat’s son, Barry, was a Badger All-America Defenseman in 1993. Pat is from Madison, Wisconsin and as a youth participated in Cub Scouts, activities, and athletics. He excelled in sports and continued to play football, basketball, and baseball at the University of Wisconsin, setting many records throughout his career. He was a first round draft pick by the Washington Redskins (1963) and played 8 seasons with the team. Pat Richter has both a B.S. in Agriculture and J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Law School. After earning his law degree in 1971, Pat was employed by Oscar Mayer Foods Corporation and served as the Vice President of Personnel for 17 years. Pat and his wife, Renee, have 4 sons and eight grandchildren.
