Make the most of it, as we will be heading back to the old club soon - for now the food crew are getting used to the space, so they are ready to roll out seamless hospitality at the Interislander Regatta from February 21 - 23. Lisa Edwards promises some “cheeky nachos”, hot chips and hot dogs this Saturday. In the lead up to the Interislander Regatta the QCYC will hold a High Performance Sailing Clinic so sailors can spruce up their skills, gain some confidence and absorb “a load of positiveness” from coach Gareth Moore. The clinic starts on the Friday afternoon, probably at around 1pm, but details will be confirmed soon. It will run all day on Saturday February 15. It will primarily be for optimist sailors, but other classes may be involved if we don’t have enough sailors. The cost is $75 per sailor. To register your sailor go the purchases page on club hub and select the HP Optimist Clinic to fill in details and pay by internet banking. Please also let Christel know if you are interested. WEEKEND AWAY! HEAD TO NELSON LAKES WITH QCYC! On March 14 & 15, QCYC is heading to Lake Rotoroa, Nelson Lakes National Park, for a weekend of sailing, other water activities, beach cricket etc. The commodore has booked the Hunters Lodge, so if you’re keen to stay there, at $30 a night per person, let Richard know. “The idea is just to have a fun weekend away from the club, and for everybody to let their hair down,” he says. The club will take up the big trailer for anyone who needs help with transport.
2020 Interislander Regatta February 21 - 23, Picton Please make sure you are registered for the Interislander Regatta, to be hosted by QCYC this month. It’s a great event, and we hope to see all our opti sailors there, sailing or supporting. Go to QCYC.org.nz to find out more. Registrations close on Sunday February 16. Late entries will incur an additional fee, and those sailors will not get the event shirt HELP PLEASE!! MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK This is our club’s major fundraiser and it takes a team effort to make it happen. Please check out the spreadsheet at the club this weekend and put your name down for a job or two (or three). It’s a great few days on the water or shore, ensuring a great event with a fantastic reputation. Some of the jobs on shore include: Make rolls in the morning - 7-8.30am Help put together officials’ bags - 7-8.30am Six people are required for table support / Taste Marlborough food - 2-7pm on the Friday. Another eight people float and replenish during Taste Marlborough - 4.30-8pm (ish). Clean up people each day from around 4pm onwards - help with dishes/rubbish/sweeping. One bar person 12-4pm daily. Cafe person for till morning and/or afternoon daily. Three cafe people for simple food prep - morning and afternoon shift. Finally on the last day Sunday we need everybody on deck to clean up. And on the water: The club also needs volunteers on the water for the Interislander Regatta, and will try to pair volunteers with the fleet their child is sailing in. Volunteers are required for Thursday and Friday, as well as the weekend, so please make sure you are part of making the event a success.
The Zephyrs – hosted by QCYC from Feb 1 to Feb 5. Words and photo by Christel. Check out Facebook page to see more great pics from the event QCYC sailors came to club day on Feb 1 and found 50 Zephyrs parked on Shelley Beach to participate in the Zephyr Nationals. Saturday was all about last minute tweaks and getting the boats weighed and measured. Some sailors joined the QCYC racing in the afternoon. On Sunday Feb 2, the Zephyr fleet headed out to the outer Harbour racing area. The first race got underway with a 17-20 Knots NW wind. There was a good chop and were trying conditions resulting in quite a few capsizes and a few breakages amongst the yachts. Three races were sailed in total with the wind dropping a little in the last two races. Day two was a great racing day with 3 races running smoothly. With the storm raving all over the country, racing for Tuesday was abandoned. Several sailors took the opportunity to explore Marlborough with an arranged wine tour. The day was closed off with a wonderful sit-down dinner for sailors and their companions in the not-quite- finished new Queen Charlotte yacht Club. QCYC kids and other volunteers helped out to make this dinner a success. The food was great, and QCYC kids learned some table manners to make them excel in their table service. On the last day - Wed Feb 5 - racing got underway with 14 knots and dying out. Enough time to get in three quick races in before heading back to QCYC. With a total of nine races completed and all sailors and volunteers accounted for, it was time for prize giving and packing up the yachts. Overall results: 1st - Greg Wright of Worser Bay 2nd - Tim Snedden of the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron 3rd - Kelcey Gager (Manly Sailing Club) The event was well received by the sailors and hopefully we will see a lot more of these regattas coming to QCYC in Picton. QCYC would like to thank all the volunteers for helping make the event such a success SAILOR SUCCESS STORIES - Max and Finn both went to the O'pen Skiff National Championships 2020 at Napier Sailing Club in in January. Max came in 18th in the under 13s and Finn was 17th in the under 17s. Napier put on a great regatta. And Moss and Louis did well at the Auckland Champs in Maraetai, in late January, with Louie coming 7th and Moss 14th overall.
