June 2021 News Views Editorial Hello, welcome back to the N&V Editorial. We are wondering just how many of you have noticed the new theme to our editorial header we have adopted recently? That the ‘&’ of ‘News & Views’ changes to something topical each month, just a little touch we like to add! This month it’s the Euro 2020 logo to coincide with our Euro 2020 theme. If you are cheering on the Three Lions, The Red Dragon or the Rampant Lion, or any of the other teams, be sure to pop into one of our locals and sink a few while doing so, all our local pubs need our custom after lockdown and what better excuse do you need other than cheering on the boys! Have a gander at pages 19-21 for details on the Tournament, the Home Nation fixtures and potential next round opponents. The start of major tournaments, even with a limited number of fans, is a great sign that we are starting to return to normality again, well, maybe a new normality at least. With 21st June being (at time of going to print) the date the Government are intending to lift all restrictions, we’re crossing fingers, toes and every possible thing in the hope that there are no delays. It will be great to start moving away from some of the most draconian peacetime clampdowns on our freedoms, as necessary as they were, I’m sure each and every one of us will be happy to see the back of them, although that does mean the Mother in Law will have free reign to pop round as and when she pleases once more… Every rose has its thorn I suppose…thank god the pubs are open again eh?! I’m joking of course, I have a fantastic Mother in Law, although she frequently calls me her 3rd Favourite Son in Law… despite only having two… Until next month…Keep safe! Laura & Pete Find us on Facebook under News & Views Find all of our back copies on the Caythorpe & Frieston Parish Council Web Page Congratulations to Premiership Champions Manchester City!!! Congratulations also to FA Cup Winners Leicester City!!! All Correspondence To: editorsnewsandviews@gmail.com 5
Caythorpe Primary School National Gardening Week We are so lucky at Caythorpe Primary School to have such stunning grounds. Mr Dewey does a wonderful job of ensuring the field is cut and prepared for the children to play on. A few weeks ago, it was National Gardening Week so we have been tidying other areas we are fortunate to have, a sensory garden, a mini-allotment and a pond area. Neverland had fabulous fun tidying the pond area as part of National Gardening Week. They worked very hard clearing away weeds and leaves. They even found time to plant a variety of beans as part of their science topic. I asked if they were baked beans but they said they were runner and broad beans. Our sensory garden and allotment garden have never looked tidier. We have plans to continue to develop these areas to make them safe, purposeful learning spaces. Mrs Palmer is developing the Sensory Garden with our school council in addition to other groups of children. If you are planning a Spring clear out, before going to the tip, we are looking for the following; Old metal pots and pans, Wooden spoons, Old buckets, Small garden ornaments, End tins of outdoor/wood suitable paint, Old plastic piping & Bird feeders If you have any left-over stones or bark chippings from your own garden projects these would be equally welcomed. We will be holding a non-uniform day at some point to raise money for appropriate bedding plants to stimulate the senses such as herbs, lavender, sweet peas, silver sage, lambs’ ears, sage and petunias. Space and Beyond Pupils in Hogwarts (Year 5 and 6) are learning about Space. After the recent news that NASA have successfully sent pictures back from their helicopter to Mars the children are excited about their topic this term. For their Big Bang to introduce the learning they will be going on a (virtual) tour of Mars and the international space station. Throughout the topic, the children will discover the phenomena of Earth, the moon, our place in the solar system. They will learn to be able to describe the move- ment of the Earth, other planets relative to the sun in the solar system. The children have brought in some fantastic homework projects Sam’s Recipe Book The smells that have been wafting out from the staff room the last few Fridays have been making everyone feel ravenous. Sam Connor has been working with Mrs Laing to craft culinary creations on a Friday afternoon. This has inspired him to write his recipe book. He would like to collect the favourite recipes of Caythorpe to publish in a recipe. The proceeds of the sales of the book would go to cancer charities of his choice. If you have a recipe to share maybe a family favourite Friday feast or a sumptuous Sunday sweet treat, email to helen.hunt@caythorpe-cit.co.uk including your name and maybe a few lines about why the dish is special to you and your family and perhaps a photo. and I’ll forward to Sam and Mrs Laing. Change For Life Combat one of the Active Coordinators from Carres Sports Outreach, Jack Padley, delivered a session on Combat. The main aim is to give the children a flavour of what combat sports are like as well as raising heart rates. Florrie enjoyed being out of breath and Travis gave it a big thumbs up. Caythorpe Open Gardens We are looking forward to Open Gardens again on August 22ⁿd between 2:00-5:00pm Registration, Teas etc. will be at the Church Hope to see you there! Ann Russell - 01400 273090 Caythorpe Short Mat Bowls Caythorpe Short Mat Bowls Club meet in Caythorpe Village Hall on a Tuesday afternoon – we hope to recommence bowling sessions as soon as regulations permit in the coming weeks as we move on up and out of lockdown. We are a very friendly group and welcome newcomers – no previous bowling experience required, and tuition is willingly given by the more experienced members within the Club. Short mat bowls is an ideal pastime for those who may not be able to undertake more strenuous sporting activities. The short mat bowls game is fun to play and easily learned. No special attire is necessary other than comfortable footwear and it helps to have a steady hand; a choice of bowls is available. Teams of three or four are picked on the day from a closed bag at random, and an informal round “robin” competition takes place ensuring each team plays the other teams. There are no prizes but from week to week you will enjoy the company of other Club members and have the opportunity to make many new friends. Members who do not want to bowl every week are still encouraged to come along in a social capacity to meet up for a chat and keep in contact with each other. Being a sociable bunch, we also get together for social events which in the past have included a summer BBQ, Christmas lunch/party and a couple of times a year we enjoy pub suppers or lunch or afternoon tea. So if you are new to the village, newly retired or just have spare time on Tuesday afternoons why not come along and see if short mat bowling and our friendly club could be for you (without any obligation). If you would like more details or to be notified of the start date for the new sessions - please email moira.weller@yahoo.com or feel free to ring Chair Bob Sampson on 01400 273873. Alternatively, if you would like to come along to the Club AGM this is being held in the Village Hall starting at 3pm on 1st June 2021. We look forward to welcoming our existing members and hopefully new members then. All Correspondence To: editorsnewsandviews@gmail.com 9

Dear All, Hopefully by the time you receive this edition the weather will be a bit warmer! Spring has been a little chillier this year but that hasn't stopped us spending lots of time outside. We have been learning about nature, in particular bugs and creepy crawlies. We have tidied our bug house, made a wormary and have been waiting patiently for the tadpoles in our rockpool to grow their legs but it's a slow process for our little ones! I think they thought they would turn into frogs overnight! We have shared stories including Growing Frogs, Look Out Ladybird and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children have helped to make a beautiful display using their painting and cutting skills. We have planted the potatoes at Denise’s and the carrots and potatoes we have planted in pots at Pre-school are just about sprouting. Again it's a patient waiting game! As always we have been encouraging and supporting the children with their Speech and Language development by sharing lots of books, singing and circle time. The children decided they would like to form their own band and chose the musical instrument they wanted to play. A good job the neighbours are not too close! We are very pleased to say that we have had no positive cases of Covid-19 and we hope that as time progresses parents will feel more confident to send their children to Pre-school. Please get in touch if you would like to know more about our lovely setting, we have spaces for 2, 3 and 4 year old children. Visit us on www.facebook.com/caythorpepreschool or contact us on the details shown on our advert. We will soon be launching our new website which will provide further information about the Pre-school. Best Wishes from Pre-school Staff

COUNTY COUNCILLOR ALEXANDER MAUGHAN I am both honoured and excited to be re-elected your County Councillor for Hough division with an increased majority and vote share. Thank you to everyone who voted in the local elections. The Hough electoral division achieved the highest turnout in the whole of Lincolnshire – at 44.3% - which I firmly believe is testament to our collective hard work as a community to engage residents in local decision making. County-wide the election result was also decisive, with the Conservatives returning 54 out of 70 Councillors across Lincolnshire. Our priorities will be keeping council tax low, providing good quality services, and supporting an ambitious building and development programme of roads, schools and broadband. We will also be targeting more support to tackle potholes and fly-tipping and continue to provide high quality services for our most vulnerable residents of all ages. Locally my priority continues to be championing our villages, supporting our residents and ensuring we get our fair share of council budgets. We have achieved a number of local improvements in recent years but there is always more to do. Any suggestions you have are gratefully received. I am always available to assist with your individual queries or concerns too - contact details below. 1960 Soviet Union 1964 Spain 1968 Italy The Covid Delayed Euro 2020 Tournament will finally 1972 West Germany get under way this month, kicking off with Turkey V 2016 Portugal Italy in Rome on Friday 11th June. This tournament sees three home nations taking part, England, Wales and Scotland, who are appearing in their first Tournament since 1998. One major change we will see is rather than being based in one host country, there are several, with matches being played in London, Glasgow, Rome, Baku, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Bucharest, Amsterdam, 2012 Spain Seville, Munich & Budapest. This tournament seems to occasionally echo the changing face of Europe, former winners and finalists and teams seemingly tied into modern historical events. 1976 Czechoslovakia The first European Championship took place in 1960, with the Soviet Union beating Yugoslavia in the final (notably neither country still exists, but more on that later…) with the widely regarded Greatest ‘Keeper of all time, Lev Yashin appearing for the Soviets. Another winner, Czechoslovakia in 1976, are yet another country that is now lost to history. The most successful country, or arguably countries, is Germany, albeit under the 2008 Spain old pre reunification name of West Germany in two of their record three wins, matched by being runners up three times also, six out of the 15 finals featuring a German national team making them far and away the most successful team of the tournament. The 1992 Tournament was remarkable for several reasons, firstly the winners, Denmark, managed to win it without actually qualifying for the finals! They were 1980 West Germany 2004 Greece invited to replace Yugoslavia, who were expelled due to being involved with the Yugoslavian war, which led to the break up of Yugoslavia and a decade of wars. It was also the first tournament to involve a reunified German team following the fall of the Berlin Wall some three years earlier. The original winners, The Soviet Union, were represented by a CIS team (Commonwealth of Independent States) following the collapse of the USSR, this tournament truly represented the changing face of Europe at the time. 2004 was the tournament of surprises. Favourites Germany, Italy and Spain all 2000 France failing to progress from the group stages and the holders, France, being knocked out by rank outsiders, Greece, who further upset all the odds by beating Host Nation Portugal in the Final! 1984 France Portugal are the current holders, but will face both France & Germany in their group this time, a ‘Group of Death’ for sure! England V Scotland in Group D will be one to tune into for certain too! Wherever you are watching, raise a glass or two and cheer our boys on! 1996 Germany 1992 Denmark 1988 Netherlands All Correspondence To: editorsnewsandviews@gmail.com 19

In & Around The Garden At last the weather is a bit milder and no frost is forecast for at least the next week, so I have taken the plunge and planted out some dahlias. I had been leaving them outside during the day for a couple of weeks, but taking them inside at night when frost threatened. They should be tough enough for outdoor living now. I have been treating tomatoes the same way, but they will be staying in pots. I usually grow cordon varieties up canes, pinching out side shoots as they appear, but this year I also bought a packet of seeds for a bush type that gives mini plum fruits. I wonder how they will turn out. As any gardening book will tell you, dry shade is the most difficult situation for persuading plants to grow. The end of my garden has 5 large trees and 2 smaller ones and, given our low rainfall, is about as dry and shady as it gets. There are several shrubs that will tolerate these conditions, but I have always bought small ones as there are so many tree roots it’s hard to find space to dig a hole for a bigger specimen. So far Weigela, and evergreen Mahonia, Eleagnus and Viburnum are doing OK, sharing the space with a Lonicera and Abelia that were there when we moved in. (I won’t list the non-survivors.) The herbaceous perennials are all cuttings or seedlings from plants growing elsewhere in the garden, especially ferns, hellebores and brunneras: I don’t buy anything expensive as it might not survive. Despite the inhospitable conditions there is very little bare earth. Wild plants appear from time to time and I tend to leave them to see how they manage. In recent years I have seen more and more wild arum (Arum maculatum) , which has over 40 different common names. With its brown spadix sticking up inside a hooded spathe, it looks rather sinister, but my favourite name of Jack-in-the-pulpit suits it well. Other gifts from nature include lesser celandine and herb robert, both eager spreaders (thugs), white dead nettle, red campion and two large plants of goat’s beard, which grow to 5 feet tall with large sprays of tiny cream coloured flowers. A hogweed has sprung up recently, but I don’t think I want that – I’ll stick with cow parsley. Either is has been a bad winter for amphibians, or the pond has fallen from favour. To date I have seen only one frog and one newt and no sign of spawn or tadpoles. I hope they have gone elsewhere, not perished. One visitor I could have done without was a badger that has been digging up the lawn again. I have blocked three scrapes that go under the back fence, and hope it will take the hint and go elsewhere. A more welcome visitor was a blackcap, which was singing very loudly in the cherry tree. It was just passing through, but good to see. JA All Correspondence To: editorsnewsandviews@gmail.com 22
WE CAN MEET AT LAST! Having just listened to Boris Johnson announcing the updated guidance and easing of restrictions relating to the Covid Roadmap set out earlier this year, it seems we have good news for members this month and it is that, finally, we are going to be able to meet up as group. Hurrah! Pauline Dorey has asked me to let you all know that on Caythorpe & District Women’s Institute THURSDAY 10˧˦˨˦˩˨ JUNE IN CAYTHORPE VILLAGE HALL GARDEN at 2:00-4:00pm, we will be having our first “Get Together” of the year. All members are, of course, invited and as of 17th May up to 30 people can meet outdoors. Indoor hospitality is also allowed in pubs, restaurants etc. from that date, so there is every possibility that tea, coffee and suchlike will be allowed to be served to us. As this is going to press before that date I can’t say what other easing of restrictions might be in the pipeline, but it is certainly looking like all is going to plan and we will be able to resume “normal” activities without face masks but using our common sense by the end of June. For a bit of fun, Pauline has asked us all to try to bring to the meeting, a photo of our hair styles BEFORE and AFTER we had managed to get it cut once the hair salons opened in April. I still haven’t had mine cut since August 2020 when I was last at my mother’s in Seaford, East Sussex. I have made an appointment for her hairdresser to cut it on 21st May and as I have very thick, naturally curly hair, it is not difficult to imagine how wild it all looks after nine months; long hair when it is grey is not a good look! Our July meeting, don’t forget, will be our Annual Meeting and we will be voting for a new President and TWO more members are need on the committee. Being a committee member only really involves meeting once a month, a week prior to the members meeting. Any new information, events and so on that have come in from area office in Sleaford, will be discussed and decisions about how to proceed will be made. Depending on what sub-committee you have selected to be on e.g. programme planning, you may also meet with the other members of that committee every few weeks too. As you can see, it is not a big commitment and only a few hours a month of your time is needed. When social and other events are organised you will all pull together as a team to achieve your goal as you would expect. So ladies, please consider joining our happy team and possibly make new friends at the same time. The National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) Virtual Annual Meeting 2021 is to be held on Tuesday 8th June. Full details regarding this virtual event can be found on www.nfwiam21.com The speakers at the meeting this year will be HRH The Countess of Wessex, Dame Cressida Dick Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis and the Rt Hon Baroness Hale of Richmond as well as Lynne Stubbings, the current NFWI chair. Take a look and see what you think about taking part, it is £9 per device so up to six of you could watch on one device, laptop, ipad etc. and have lunch together in the interval. We are certainly looking forward to being able to give our parents, children and grandchildren a long awaited hug next week and equally looking forward to seeing all of our WI friends too, let’s hope we all recognise each other after all this time. Stay safe! Sue Case All Correspondence To: editorsnewsandviews@gmail.com 23

Cricket News The Cricket Season has started, so of course the long dry spell of weather has ended. However, between rain showers Caythorpe Cricket Club has been a hive of activity, with most teams having played their early-season fixtures. Training on Friday evenings has seen a further increase in numbers participating in all age groups, with many Girls joining. The Seniors have played their first two matches, resulting in wins against Bassingham and Waddington.Highlight performances were innings of Joe Attewell (53 not out) and Theo Mussell (52 n.o.) helping secure an eight wicket victory against Bassingham. Ali Macpherson took four wickets in the Bassingham innings. In a low scoring game against Waddington, Caythorpe were victorious by 3 wickets. However, the score is rather misleading - having dismissed the opposition for just 47 runs (Theo Mussell taking six wickets for only 14 runs) Caythorpe batted in reverse order to give practice to those who normally bat lower down the order. Hence our top-order batsmen had a day doing very little! Our Under 15's have played only one game because of rain but had a good win against Grantham. Unfortunately the Under 9's, Under 11’s and Under 13's each lost their opening fixtures but the boys and girls taking part enjoyed themselves and are rapidly learning the game. Lincolnshire Under 14's used our Ground to play Cambridgeshire Under 14's, with the Visitors winning just before the rain fell! STOP PRESS - Caythorpe Seniors had a resounding 71-run victory over Hykeham and are now clear leaders in the League table. Details next month! Not from the Rectory A Month in which the Rector ‘bounces back’ Heritage Railways appear to be benefiting from a government ‘Bounce Back’ scheme and we duly bought our ‘Bounce Back’ ticket entitling us to a whole compartment on the 11:15am departure one day in April from Wirksworth to Duffield on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway In truth this was trip down memory lane for often of a Saturday I would take mother out for a ride in the car and we covered this area of Derbyshire extensively, perhaps enjoying a picnic in the car park at Alport Heights looking over Wirksworth and then dropping down to the town to see the progress on bringing the railway back to life before eventually travelling on the line including most memorably a ride one year on the Santa Special The line south would have joined the Midland main line at Duffield but the intention was to take the route north beyond Wirksworth and join the main line north of Rowsley thus by-passing a stretch of line owned by a rival company between Ambergate and Rowsley. As soon as the Midland Railway was able to, it took over the line from Ambergate and so Wirksworth became and remained a short branch line mainly for freight from the lead mines and limestone quarries; for milk from farms along the route and for a small but regular group of commuters The last freight train in 1989 but the lines remained and the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway was formed to bring life back and today our handsome crimson red carriages were hauled by ‘Eric’– A Class 14 diesel hydraulic locomotive built in 1965 at Swindon D9537 for shunting duties, latterly working for British Steel before retiring to the East Lancashire Railway but on loan to the EVR. We can see in the pictures we took first the beautiful British Railways crest on the carriage side displaying a demi-lion rampant (the British lion) holding between the paws a silver locomotive wheel. The lion is issuant from a heraldic crown of gold on which are arranged the rose (for England), the thistle (for Scotland), the leek (for Wales) and the oak leaf (for all Great Britain) – and secondly All Correspondence To: editorsnewsandviews@gmail.com 30
a prospective purchaser of the 1967 beige Morris Minor parked at the station! It is but a short journey to the National Trust property of Hardwick Hall where you can see the rector doing that which the bishops have instructed – taking some time to rest! We often combine this with a visit to the family grave taking flowers to replace the Christmas wreath This letter will be coming out when the church calendar has moved forward into the Trinity season about which John Meade Faulkner [1858- 1932] memorably wrote: We have done with dogma and divinity, Easter and Whitsun past, The long, long Sundays after Trinity Are with us at last; The passionless Sundays after Trinity, Neither feast-day nor fast! News & Views Shout-Out Dear Editors, Southcliff Benefice: Lent 2021. A very warm ‘thank you’ to all who supported our Lent giving which was for GRACE – Grantham and Rural Areas Covid-19 Effort; together we raised the magnificent sum of £648. Thank you from Stuart (Rector) Cricket Explained With the cricket season now in full swing, some parents still aren’t bringing their children along to play. I feel this is because they think cricket is too complicated. It’s quite simple. You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game! Good morning Pete and Laura, I am very grateful to you for your willingness to change the background to my article about the Duke of Edinburgh. Your solution was excellent for your readers with visual impairment. On their behalf and mine, very many thanks.
