CHAPLAIN’S REPORT
Brother Knights: Happy New Year! Something I can’t seem to get enough of in these cold winter days is
sitting in front of a warm fire. I have an electronic one in the rectory. It gives the overall effect, but I must admit
it’s pretty lame compared to the real thing. A real fire takes work to tend and stir and feed and foster, and
something about that whole process makes the enjoyment of it all the more satisfying. It’s like a living,
breathing thing – a friend with a mind of its own, and who you hate to see go at evening’s end. As we ring out
the old and ring in the new this January, I keep thinking about stirring up the embers of hope in our hearts. It
takes conscious work, but when hope comes alive it fills our lives with a warmth and fire that is surely worth
the effort. I invite us all to stoke the hope in our hearts this New Year by renewing our sense of gratitude, and
then reaching out to thank the people we are grateful to and for. They say you can’t think your way out of
hopelessness, so write down a list and call up some of the people who come to mind. Thank them, and above
all, thank God each day in prayer for the wonder of this gift of life we’ve all been given and the powerful ways
He acts in and through our lives, overcoming every obstacle with the hope we have in Him. Christ’s peace ~Fr.
John

On behalf of the officers of the 4th Degree, we wish all of you a healthy and prosperous New Year. January is a
quiet month for the 4th Degree activities. However, February 15th is our Flag Presentation dinner at the KC
hall. We would like to invite all members of the Knights of Columbus to attend this event. The evening begins
with a social followed by dinner and a program. We invite a guest speaker for the evening and the followed by
the presentation of flags to various organizations from Fond du Lac and the surrounding area. This program is
an offspring from our Flag Appreciation Weekend held in September when monies were collected from the
distribution of flag lapel pins.

Ladies Auxiliary News: The KC ladies annual Christmas opened with prayer by Kate Barr. A committee of
Barb Michels, Kate Barr, Dorothy Rieder and Mary Zwicker served a delicious meal. The entertainment for the
evening was the SMSA Jazz Band. After dinner there was a meeting chaired by Mary Karrman. Members voted
to give $100.00 to the Jazz Band. Two families will be helped for the holidays. The first family is a young
mother with 4 children. She works part time and does not have a vehicle. The second family is a foster mother
with 2 children. A collection basket was passed tonight and at last month’s meeting and $371 was collected.
Members voted to take $429 from the treasury so each family member would receive $100.00 worth. It was
voted to donate $300.00 to sponsor an SMSA student to Badger Girls State. Suddenly there was a banging on
the door and St. Nick made an appearance and gave each member a popcorn ball. The table decorations were
raffled off for door prizes. The restaurant certificate winner was JoAnn Mischo. The next meeting is on Feb. 7
at 7:00 p.m. Closing prayer was by Mary Karrman. Meeting was adjourned. Janet Buechel, Publicity.

                                       Columbian Club News
The Columbian Club met for their annual meeting on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. 46 members were
present. President Greg Michels opened the meeting by recognizing Jerry Zipperer for his many years
on the Columbian Board and the dedication and leadership he provided. He will be sadly missed.
President Michels stated that all members of the Knight of Columbus Council 664 are members of the
Fond du Lac Columbian Club. Corporation by-laws require 5% of the Knights of Columbus Council
664 membership to be present for a quorum. Membership was reported to be 771 requiring 39 members
to be present to constitute a quorum and conduct new business. Columbian Club president Greg
Michels stated that the Knights of Columbus Supreme requires that an elected Board of Directors
oversee the business entity known as the Fond du Lac Columbian Club Inc. Corporation by-laws state
that we have an eleven (11) member standing board, and that the board is required to meet twelve (12)
times per year, always on the second Thursday of the month. Elections to the Board of Director's were
conducted with the results as follows:
3 Year Terms: Tom Schmitz and Tom Will
1 Year Terms: Evan Schwalbe, Chuck Anders, Bob Ramstack, Dick Taddey, Greg Michels, and Harry
Schneider
The treasurer’s report for fiscal 2017 was submitted by Treasurer Tom Will. Committee reports were
presented by Bob Ramstack (Management Committee Chairman), Jerry Lauby (Building and Grounds
Committee Chairman), Gary Muellenbach on behalf of Tom Schmitz (Special Road Construction
Project Committee Chairman) and Jim Rieder (Club Manager). President Michels thanked Everett
Schwalbe for his years of service on the Columbian board. No new or old business was conducted at
the meeting. With no further business to come before the meeting, President Greg Michels thanked
everyone for attending the annual meeting. Should any member have either a complaint or suggestion
for the betterment of this club, it should be brought to the board for review or resolution. They will be
addressed, reviewed and responded to.
        Columbian Club Secretary, David Schneider

GOING, GOING, GONE
Some are going while others have gone. It’s that time of year when the snow birds have headed or are
in the process of heading south for the winter. First, I would like to thank those of you who have
contacted me about holding your newsletter while being gone for a time. If you are heading south for
the winter in the future months and would like to stay informed of the events of Council 664, give me a
call. I can either forward your newsletter or not send it to you while you are gone. A simple phone call
or e-mail will get it done. Please call Tom Schmitz at 923-1215 or e-mail him at
trsknights@yahoo.com. If you are e-mailing please put Council 664 in the subject line, any unfamiliar
emails will not be opened.
I have had a few requests about removing your name from the mailing list because you may read the
newsletter on line. However, this is not the reason for the hold. It is to try to cut back and save the
money it is costing the council to send out the newsletter and then having the cost of it being returned
back to us as undeliverable while you are gone for a month or more. It also keeps us update on your
mailing address if you moved. Thank you for your help with this matter.

Thinking about your 2018 bucket list! Start by purchasing tickets for the first
Murder Mystery sponsored by your Council. The Murder Mystery Company
proudly presents Till Death do us Part. A murder Mystery about a Bridezilla and a
less than enthusiastic Groom. The show will be held at the clubhouse, St. Patrick’s
Day Saturday, March 17th. Doors open at 5:30 pm and dinner/show will start at
6:30 pm. There are limited number of tickets available. The cost is $35 each.
Tickets available at the KC Hall call Jim at 921-1290 or Terry Meulemans at 906-
9259 to reserve your tickets.
