Orewa SLSC sponsored by Orewa members show form at The Invitational The Invitational, a new and exciting event concept was held on the 6th of December. This event is a hybrid High-performance event and see's NZ best lifeguards drafted into teams of 12 to complete a program similar to that at international events. Orewa SLSC had 6 members drafted into teams: • James Scott (Team Kelly) • Sian Bester (Team Kent) • Kendra Stinson (Team Makaea) • Cayleen Bester (Team Quickenden) • Macey Franich & Hamish Lockie (Team Williams) This event allowed our members to mix it with NZ's best, a great early season hit-out leading into the holiday break and a chance to see where they stack up ahead of bigger competitions later in the season. With all races including a run start and a run finish- James Scott was able to use his speed on the sand to his advantage, mixing it with the frontrunners in all craft events. Due to the nature of the event, some found themselves in events they wouldn't do: Macey, Sian and Hamish even found themselves in beach flags, amongst other events, trying to bring home maximum points for the team. Cayleen had a busy day with her balanced skill set seeing her cover multiple events on the beach. The award for grit goes to Kendra Stinson who in the rescue relay, who tweaked her knee on the way out and still finished the event. It was later found out that she had in fact ruptured her ACL- (pain rating off the charts)- Kendra is one tough cookie, The event was taken out by Team Kelly, the team James Scott raced for and included NZ HP members Claudia Kelly, Briana Irving. 3
INTRODUCING SWIMT3: Orewa SLSC Sponsored by “Swim T3 has been helping Kiwi swimmers do what they do best in the water for the past 25 years and we’re really proud to be able to help Orewa SLSC this season with their 2020/2021 uniforms! We wanted to make it as easy as possible for Orewa members to grab what they need so there’s a couple of ways to find them this year. You can head to our website at www.swimt3.co.nz and on the front page there’s a link for all our surf clubs, click in there and you’ll spot the Orewa logo – that’ll give you the full list of gear to choose from. Or if you want to grab them the old fashioned way, our North Shore store on Antares Place in Rosedale will be carrying the stock as well. We can’t wait for the season to kick off and see the great work Orewa members do in our community over the summer!” Paul Barlow Marketing Manager Swim T3 NZ Boat Series #1 - Whangamata Classic Whangamata turned on the weather for our first boat series of the season, unfortunately not the usual whanga waves, but still an awesome day. We had 9 boat crews entered & racing, which was a great way to start the season for Orewa. Looking forward to our second boat series competition at Central Regionals on the 9th of January. Merry Christmas everyone! Silverdale 4
NZ Pool Champs 2020 - A Junior members reflection. This year pool champs was very different from normal. Heading into this years nationals, we had done no racing and had missed out on more than half of our training. Even still our Orewa team managed to put in a huge effort and take the overall Junior title! This year, because of COVID, all the surf clubs from Level 2 areas were separated from everyone from Level 1 areas. This event would normally be held in Auckland, but because of the restrictions on mass gatherings, the event was moved to Hamilton. With us being from a Level 2 area we were placed in a corner toward the back of the pool area. We had separate marshalling from the Level 1 swimmers, and our own designated warm-down lanes in the dive pool. Later, I heard from some friends from Level 1, that our Level 2 corner was being called the Covid Corner. Yet despite COVID and all the changes we had to deal with, all our competitors put in a huge effort and showed teamwork, courage and skill. With limited training we still managed to produce amazing performances and especially for the B groupers competing for the first time in this event. They managed to pick up new skills and compete amazingly. Congratulations to everyone who competed, and a special thanks to our coaches and managers. They gave up their own time to make the competition better for us, so a massive thanks to them. Can't wait to see you all back at the beach! Siina OSLSC U12s member Thank you to SLSNR Patrol Advocates What an adventitious start to the Christmas Season with a visit form Victoria M our Patrol Advocate from SLSNR for the season, who checked in on the patrols on Saturday the 19th of December at both Wenderholm Regional Park and then onto Orewa Beach. After a quick hike up to the lookout with Esme, Anna and Tom, who were being shown around for the first time - it was right into action. Patrols were assessed on a wide range of patrolling knowledge, CPR and a rescue demonstration. Given the outgoing tide and shallow conditions, the team opted for a board rescue demonstration as it
allowed for quicker transition from the water to the shore with the 'unconscious patient' onboard - craft selection is critical when performing a rescue in an emergency situation. A big thank you to the Patrol Advocates who travel around the country, checking in on all patrols to support our members to deliver a quality service to the public of New Zealand. Surf Lifesaving Club - a Parent members reflection “That’s what it’s all about, right there”, pronounced Orewa Surf Lifesaving Coach Zac Franich as we, not so patiently, waited for the group of current and budding lifeguards to finish wetsuiting up for the weekly winter ski training session. He was commenting on the latest entry on the clubbies “work on” board, where each athlete notes down at the start of each training session what they will target to work on that day. My son, as a ‘new to ski’ C2 member, was just starting to learn the intricacies of the surf ski. These razor thin kayaks take superb balance and skill to master. One of the ‘Open’ mens competitors, a chap that had won national titles against the best in the country, had written on my son’s work-on-board “no swims for me today”. He had noted that my boy had a habit of falling out of his ski, and was offering encouragement to avoid this. The fact that a senior competitor recognised the challenges of a young newbie was impressive enough. That he went out of his way to offer this support with humour and good grace speaks volumes for the culture Orewa is creating here. This cross-age group familiarity and support should not have come as a surprise to me - indeed, as a 6 year old nipper, my son had crossed paths with this senior at Ruakaka camp, where his younger sister was in the same group as my sons older sister. The bonds created at this annual camp go deep, and the family feel of Orewa Surf Club continue well after the camps and trainings finish. I am proud of the fact that Orewa recognises, and lives, the family values established early in the young nipper training. I am also immensely proud of my 16 year old daughter (and qualified lifeguard) continuing the tradition by giving up her time voluntarily to coach the under 12 and under 10 year olds. The experience, skill and relatability she brings to their trainings surpasses anything old dogs like me can bring to the table. Zac was correct with his statement. That’s what it’s all about, right there! Peter Beckett
Patrol Support – the Blue Uniform Ever wondered what the blue uniform represents that some of the lifeguards are wearing these days while on duty? These are our Patrol Support volunteers of which I have been a part of for the past 3 seasons. Patrol Support – or PS – is a great way for those who wish to be involved with the volunteer lifeguard teams at Orewa, but are not quite able to complete the full bronze course, mainly the swimming components. The PS teams were introduced by Surf Life Saving NZ a number of years ago as a way to attract more mature volunteers who can go on to gain a qualification to support the full bronze lifeguards. We complete all the training modules during the term of the course, and go on to sit the full written theory, first aid and CPR components on the final examination day, coming away with the blue uniform instead of the red and yellows! In addition to this, all the first aid courses are open for the PS members to gain further qualifications, as well as other non-water related courses, such as VHF Radio training. On a typical rostered patrol day, the PS guards are involved in all the usual lifeguard set ups, patrolling the estuary, flag duty, attending to first aids, manning the ‘O’ room, and calling in head count numbers plus other information to surf comm. PS guards still have to refresh annually, by completing the online theory, CPR and first aid plus the odd scenario or two, depending on who your instructor is. I was quite disappointed to not achieve my full bronze lifeguard award 3 years ago, however I didn’t realise at the time just how rewarding the PS role is, and how we can still contribute to the daily operation of a regular patrol roster. I also have the opportunity to patrol with my senior children who are still active lifeguards at Orewa. For those who still wish to go on to complete the full bronze course, this can be achieved by sitting the water components, including the dreaded 400m swim! A goal for the future, is for me to swap out the “blue” for the “red & yellows”, but until that time, I am happy to contribute in other ways to each patrol with first aid knowledge and as VPC. Give Patrol Support a go, you never know, it might be just what you’ve been looking for in life! In It For Life! as the saying goes at the beach! Belinda Langman
