AT is the executive director of the Hayward Area Historical Society, a prominent local institution that recently opened a beautiful new Center for History and Culture in the historic former I. Magnin building on Foothill Blvd. Welcome to Hayward Rotary, AT! Announcements: • Andy Krake provided an update on the Hayward Rotary Scholar recognition taking place at the next Monday meeting 12/15. Rotarians will recall that last year we put together packets of gift cards and other prizes for the students being recognized. Contributions of gift cards and other prizes are needed for next week’s recognition. See Andy for details what is needed and how to give. • Anna May announced the 3rd annual SantaCon event Saturday 12/6 starting at 6pm. Dress like Santa or Mrs. Santa and join the fun as the group visits multiple downtown eateries and pubs. Elf costumes are tolerated, but may be subject to abuse from the Santas. Costume prizes at each venue. Event sponsored by the F.U.N. Rotary Club; proceeds benefit the Hayward Animal Shelter • Robin Wilma provided a reminder about the Holiday Party this Friday 12/5, 6pm at Stonebrae Country Club. Don’t miss this fabulous annual event! Tickets are $60 and include dinner and a hosted bar in one of Hayward’s most elegant venues. If you plan to attend but have not yet purchased tickets, tell Robin ASAP. • Robin also shared a heartwarming thank you letter from a young visitor to the Omelet Brunch. The letter-writer was from Alameda, and very much enjoyed attending the event with family, and especially enjoyed winning Warriors tickets in the raffle. • Pam Russo thanked Rotarians for all the support received to date for the upcoming holiday shopping event to support developmentally disabled adults at Sorensdale. Rotarians are needed to assist next Monday 12/8, 1:45pm at Macy’s Southland Mall, to do the shopping, wrapping, and other tasks for the program. See Pam, George Pacheco, or Ashton Simmons for details, or meet the rest of the group in front of the mall entrance to Macy’s at 1:45pm. Participants will receive 25% discount at Macy’s that day. President Debby called for baskets to be passed around the room to collect additional funds for the event. Is it the truth? This week’s featured Rotarian is George Pacheco. Rotarians were quizzed on the following four facts about George, one of which is NOT TRUE: 1. He competed in the state track and field championships in the 440 relay as a high school freshman. 2. He holds a Master’s degree in horticulture. 3. He was senior class president in high school. 4. In his 8th grade catechism class, he went into the confessional on a dare, where he listened to two actual confessions. - If you missed the meeting, you’ll just have to ask George (or another fellow Rotarian) which one of the above is NOT TRUE. No spoilers this week! Fines & Foolishness: Nels Nelson turns 95 on December 2! Happy birthday, Nels, and thank you for your contribution to Rotary International … Andy Krake also paid the piper for his birthday … Craig Judy celebrated his Club anniversary by punching some new holes in his fine card … Charley Plummer made a contribution to the literacy project in celebration of 66 years of marriage to Norma. President Debby noted that Charley and Norma were married only five months after Debby was born. Without missing a beat, Charley quipped, “In that case, then you could have been our daughter!” Vocational Talk: Guy “Zak” Zakrevsky delivered his vocational talk. Zak has many years of experience as an educator, including his current position as director of the Hayward Adult School and related programs for the Hayward school district. He was given the nickname “Zak” by a former seventh grade student who couldn’t pronounce his name. The nickname stuck, and even Guy “Zak” Zakrevsky & Pres. Debby De Angelis his wife calls him “Zak”!

Zak grew up in southern New Jersey, and was primarily raised by his grandmother, who left an indelible positive impression on him. He has spent most of his professional career working in urban education supporting disadvantaged youth. He also is active in his church and frequently gives talks about education topics. He also did a stint on ESPN in the early 1990’s. Zak has been a Rotarian since 2005, and joined the Hayward club one year ago, where he felt warmly welcomed. He strived to strike the right balance of work, family, and giving back to the community. Upon completion of his vocation talk, President Debby noted that Zak had fulfilled his last Blue Badge requirement, and she gave Zak his Blue Badge right then and there! Speaker: FBI Special Agent Daniel Wunderlii. Rod Andazola introduced our featured speaker, FBI Special Agent Daniel Wunderlii, who is based in the San Francisco office. Special Agent Wunderlii provided an overview of the Bureau’s key areas of focus, which include domestic Counter Intelligence, Criminal Investigations, Espionage, Corporate Fraud, Insider Trading, Health Care Fraud, and Cyber Crime, among many others. The FBI has 12,000 special agents who are responsible for a wide range of federal enforcement and investigation duties nationwide. By comparison, the NYPD has 34,500 officers just to cover that Pres. Debby De Angelis, Agent Daniel Wunderlii & Rod Andazola one city. Special Agent Wunderlii provided examples from his experience, such as the time a team was investigating a DuPont employee for selling sensitive corporate secrets to the Chinese government. During a warrant search of the employee’s home, he asked his wife (in Mandarin) to go to their warehouse and destroy evidence. Of course, the FBI had a Mandarin-fluent agent present, which led to the wife being intercepted at the warehouse where additional incriminating evidence was discovered. In another example, a corporation was being investigated for making fraudulent statements in which they claimed operating expenses as capital investments, thus inflating their company’s worth to their shareholders. This is akin to claiming that putting gasoline in a car’s tank is increasing the value of the car by the dollar amount spent on the gas. Special Agent Wunderlii also mentioned that he’d heard a rumor that Sheriff Emeritus Charley Plummer once famously beat the FBI in a push-up competition. Charley noted that these days, one push up would suffice retake the title from him (!), but that he had tremendous respect for the FBI. The room nodded in agreement. Greeters Closing Remarks President Debby reported that the passing of baskets for the Holiday spree event netted $1,037. Thank you, Hayward Rotarians for your amazing generosity! She also thanked today’s greeters, Kim Huggett and Valerie Caveglia. Next Meeting: December 8th - Mt.
