January 22, 2023 Service of Worship Welcome & Announcements Meditation Verse Hebrews 2:9, ESV But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Prelude Come Let Us Worship Our God Call to Worship Revelation 5:9b-14, ESV “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped. For the Old Testament readings, we are currently reading through the Book of Proverbs. Responsive Reading Proverbs 23:12-28, ESV Leader: Apply your heart to instruction People: and your ear to words of knowledge. Leader: Do not withhold discipline from a child; People: if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Leader: If you strike him with the rod, People: you will save his soul from Sheol. Leader: My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad. People: My inmost being will exult when your lips speak what is right. Leader: Let not your heart envy sinners, People: but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day. Leader: Surely there is a future, People: and your hope will not be cut off. Leader: Hear, my son, and be wise, People: and direct your heart in the way. Leader: Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, People: for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags. Leader: Listen to your father who gave you life, People: and do not despise your mother when she is old. Leader: Buy truth, and do not sell it; People: buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. Leader: The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; People: he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. Leader: Let your father and mother be glad; People: let her who bore you rejoice. Leader: My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. People: For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress is a narrow well. ALL: She lies in wait like a robber and increases the traitors among mankind. Hymn of Adoration “Join All The Glorious Names” Red Hymnal #301 4

For the New Testament readings, we are currently reading through the Book of 1 Peter. Scripture Reading 1 Peter 2:13-25, ESV Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. The Nicene Creed is a statement of faith of the early Christian church. The occasion for the Creed was the heresy of Arianism, which taught that God the Son was a created being, hence not fully God. In opposition to this, the Creed requires that Christians affirm belief that God the Son was “begotten, not made” and “very God of very God.” Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. 8
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who, for us and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets; And we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. (Children ages 3-6 may be dismissed to attend Children’s Bible Time in classroom #8.) Hear the Word of the Lord Sermon Text 1 Peter 5:1-3, NIV To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
