“Value of Educational Athletics” “Life Skills Taught Here” Roy Turner, CMAA, LBPE 9:28: AM We all have a sense of urgency to defend the educational value of athletics in our respective school system. I think we all feel the athletics can be educational, we just sometimes do not promote it. Let’s start with the premise that athletics are educational and promote the following: 1

How Do We Enhance Performance? • Do you know your schools mission statement? • Is your coaching philosophy consistent with and support the mission of the school? • The number one educational outcome of co-curricular activities is the promotion of learning. 9:38: AM Promotion of Learning: We must be promote the educational value of athletics to help athletes develop positive character traits and learn life lessons. We must encourage our athletes to strive to become the best player and person they can be. Citizenship through participation occurs both on and off the playing surface both in and out odf season. Developing good citizen-athletes involves defining and developing the relationship from athlete to athlete, from athlete to team, and from athlete to community. 10

In an effort to provide resources and educate our staff and families with regards to college athletics and the recruiting process, New Hanover County Schools recently subscribed to an online Educational Recruiting System from Dynamite Sports, Inc. 9:48: AM 18

Being flexible, patient, a good teammate, and a person of character and integrity are all positive outcomes that can be gained from participation. 21

Integrity and ability to make them feel good about themselves Everyone knows 250 people and those people know 250 people 62, 500 people you have access to if they know 250 that is 15.6 million people. Success is not a destination it is a journey. Success is not achieved it is attracted. We are the some total of the people we come in contact with and their experiences. Who moved my cheese? When You Thought I wasn’t Looking • A message every adult should read because children are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say. • When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hang my sportsmanship banner in the gym, (recognition) I immediately wanted to earn another one. • When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing (community service), I learned that those who have something should give to those who don't. 10:03: AM 30
When You Thought I wasn’t Looking • When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you take care of our facility and everyone in it (pride), I learned we have to take care of what we are given. • When you thought I wasn't looking I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn’t feel good (commitment), I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up. • When you thought I wasn't looking I saw tears come from your eyes (compassion), and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all 10:03: AM right to cry. 31
