PRELUDE: Air and Chorale on “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” Jack Noble White WELCOME AND INVOCATION CALL TO WORSHIP P: We are dust and ashes, bone and breath, full of frailty and limitation. Lent calls us into reflection and repentance, drawing closer to God. C: Lent calls us to see ourselves as dust and ash, alive only with God’s breath. P: Lent invites us to be pilgrims, moving with Jesus toward the truth. C: In Lent, we travel with Jesus, moving toward an end and a beginning. P: Let us worship the God of glory, with all that is within us. CALL TO CONFESSION Keeping up appearances is exhausting. Pretending to be something we are not takes a toll on our spirits. The illusion of perfection makes us weary. Lent invites us into a place of freedom. Let us speak the truth about ourselves, and know the truth about God. Trusting in God’s abundant, living mercy, let us pray. (time for silent reflection)…Amen CONFESSION God who breathes life into dust, and fills ash with glory, we come to you knowing that we are broken, not by your doing, but by our own. Forgive us for chasing shiny gods, instead of turning to you. 2
Forgive us for trusting our own abilities more than your goodness. Forgive us for seeing other people as stepping stones, instead of as your beloved ones. Breathe life into our dust again, we pray, and claim us once more as your own. In Jesus’ name, Amen. DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Who are we, that God is mindful of us? God’s fingers have shaped us, and God’s breath gives us life. God’s abundant mercy follows us with each step. In the life of Jesus Christ, we see a new way to live. In following him, our lives are redeemed. Through Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven. Be at peace in God’s grace. OPENING HYMN: “Tree of Life and Awesome Mystery” ELW 334 1 Tree of Life and awesome mystery, in your death we are reborn; though you die in all of hist'ry, still you rise with every morn, still you rise with every morn. 2 We remember truth once spoken, love passed on through act and word; every person lost and broken wears the body of our Lord, wears the body of our Lord. 3 Christ, you lead and we shall follow, stumbling though our steps may be; one with you in joy and sorrow, we the river, you the sea, we the river, you the sea. L5 God of all our fear and sorrow, God who lives beyond our death Hold us close through each tomorrow, Love as near as ev’ry breath PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you Pastor: Let us pray, People: Loving God, Your son came, and like a good shepherd, gave his life for your sheep. Receive our humble gratitude for this act of sacrifice and courage. Amen. 3
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE LENTEN VERSE ELW page 125 People: Let your steadfast love come to us, O Lord. Save us as you promised; we will trust your word. Save us as you promised; we will trust your word. GOSPEL John 10:1-18 10‘Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.’ 6 Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. 11 ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.’ Response after the reading: Pastor: The Word of our Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 4
THE MESSAGE Pastor Sherri Otto HYMN OF THE DAY “Abide with Me” ELW 629 1 Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens: Lord with me abide! When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me! 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day; Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; O thou who changes not, abide with me! 3 I need thy presence ev’ry passing hour: What but thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Thro’ cloud and sunshine, O abide with me! 4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness; Where is death’s sting? Where grave, thy victory? I triumph still if thou abide with me! 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. IMPOSITION OF ASHES “Dust and Ashes” Piano We invite everyone who desires to come forward to be marked by the sign of the cross with the ashes. The ashes remind us of our mortality and complete dependence on God and the grace we have been given in the crucified and risen Christ. The mark of the cross is a sign of our identity in Christ and our commitment to him. If you prefer to receive the ashes on the back of your hand instead of your forehead, please present your hand to the pastor. 5
Blessing for Ash Wednesday So let the ashes come the life that rises and returns as beginning and finds its way again. and not as end; See what shimmers the first sign amid their darkness, but not the final. what endures Let them rest upon you within their dust. as invocation and invitation, See how they draw us and let them take you toward the mystery the way that ashes know that will consume to go. but not destroy, May they mark you that will blossom with the memory of fire from the blazing, and of the life that will scorch us that came before the burning: with its joy. ~Jan Richardson OFFERING: “Lord Jesus, Think on Me” arr. Iteke Prins OFFERTORY RESPONSE: “Create in Me a Clean Heart” ELW 188 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. WORDS OF INSTITUTION LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION Communion Hymn: “We Come to Your Feast: (Michael Joncas), One Voice Choir 6

CLOSING HYMN: “What Wondrous Love is This?” ELW 666 (v. 1-3) 1 What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul? 2 When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, when I was sinking down, sinking down, when I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul. 3 To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing; to God and to the Lamb I will sing; to God and to the Lamb, who is the great I Am, while millions join the theme I will sing, I will sing, while millions join the theme, I will sing.
