TSOGO SUN AMASHOVA CLASSIC 2014 – by Mike Viljoen This year’s Amashova started with a little more excitement than the previous years due to the addition of the UWCT status for us more ‘experienced’ riders. This meant a possible UCI jersey for winning your category. After the previous 2 days dismal weather, Sunday awoke with warm and dry conditions – let’s race! The Epic journey began with the feared climb up Fox hill. Complete cyclist came with numbers and an obvious plan. It also helps that they are a well raced team with the amount of races in JHB compared to KZN. A moderate tempo saw off at least half the bunch leaving about 15-20 riders going over the top together. A few harmless attacks were brought back before the turn off Fox. The only problem that the UWCT status does bring is negative racing. This played into the hands of Complete Cyclist with the superior numbers as they fired off Franco Ferreira along Umlaas road. He quickly got a gap and we never saw him again as nobody was prepared to get together and contribute towards a meaningful chase….negative racing. Soon after Shaun Mackenzie took advantage of a counter attack and took off after Franco. The chase showed minor interest and almost brought him back but he attacked again and went clear. The bunch settled into a slow cruise back to Durban. Going into the Inchanga area just before the Comrades wall, 4 riders managed to escape including myself. We quickly saw the opportunity and set off in chase of the 2 riders up front we worked hard to get a sizable gap by Pinetown but unfortunately lost a rider due to a puncture and had to contend with a Complete Cyclist Team mate who rightly was soft peddling through. This along with the fact that jumping across to the break to create a real race wasn’t on the minds of the group left behind, the break was brought back by Westwood mall - the fight for the minor positions seemed more meaningful at the time. Going over Tollgate turned out to be a dangerous affair as we started catching the shorter races and riders were all over the road. The nerves of the bunch could already be felt as various individuals took chances off the front but was all brought back together by the time we hit the NMR avenue straight. Going into the final sprint was always going to be about positioning with the sprinters muscling their way to the front and forcing a tight bunch into the final corner. The sprint was led out by Bluff meat supply and the minor positions filled. It wasn’t clear at that stage what the positions were due to the fact that two age groups had been put together and also the slower races were mixed in at the finish. I just managed to slip into the top 5 and 3rd in the UWCT cat. Thanks to Corinne for setting up the Tent and eats/drinks for us. Always a great experience after a race.
REF: CONVERSION OF THE PROCEDURE ROOM AT GREY’S HOSPITAL On behalf of CHOC Pietermaritzburg branch, I would like to thank you for sponsoring the conversion of a bathroom into a procedure room situated in ward A1; at Grey’s Hospital. This project was successfully completed by DAE Construction at the end of July. The room is currently used for Pediatrics and Oncology/Haematology procedures making the work of the doctors easier. According to the feedback I received from the doctors, the procedure room has created a lot of space and capacity for the doctors to function more efficiently than before. It has about four chemo-chairs that are used for administering chemotherapy procedures too. There is further a bed for assessing patients and exercising other procedures on patients. Due to cross infection concerns, the Oncology/Haematology ward has since been separated by an aluminum double door from the general ward. This has further created control on the people accessing this ward. The PVC floor has also given a nurturing texture and our wish is create the same ambiance in the whole ward in future. Grey’s Hospital might have two Pediatrics Oncologists from next year as a result; more children will be referred to this treatment Centre. This will enable the doctors to reach out to more children both at the clinic and ward too. I would like further want to thank you for helping us to lift the name of CHOC high in KZN by sponsoring this project. We further look forward to a continued partnership with The Cows in “keeping more than hope alive” in the lives of children with cancer or life threatening blood disorders and their families. We value your involvement in our work. The Cows Support LOVE LIVING LIFE!

The Fulton staff and parents sell eats and drinks on the day and in every age category you would find some of their learners competing in the event. It is great for the hearing children to mix with and be aware of kids with special needs from an early age and it slots in with the spirit of the event which is to get kids from all walks of life on bicycles to compete and have fun all at the same time!
Another nice characteristic about the Fulton course is that it is so accessible to the parents who want to cheer and help their little ones along. On both the small and big lap you can see your little one about 5 to 6 times and therefor keep tabs on their performance, punctures, dropped chain, tears, laughs etc…… Both Evan and Warren had great races even with some tough competition. They both had shaky starts but soon got into a rhythm and started catching some riders ahead of them. Evan managed to ride himself into third sport and had to work really hard on his final lap to stay away from the rider behind him. The Wright brothers took the two top steps on the podium again which they have done consistently almost throughout the whole series. In Warren’s race it was the very talented Travis Stedman who rode away from the field early on to take the win. The fight for the final 2 spots on the podium became a tussle between Matt Millward, Dreyer Botma, Liam Tyler and Warren. Matt broke away and left the trio to fight it out for the last podium spot. Liam Tyler dropped off the pace just before the start of the final lap which left Warren and Dreyer to finish the battle for 3rd place. Dreyer just got the edge on the final corner to finish ahead of Warren. We had no idea how the kids did overall in the series of 8 races and were pleasantly surprised
when we learnt that they both got a 3rd place in their respective categories. They had smiles from ear to ear and Werner and I were so happy for them and that we made the time and effort to get them to these special events. Hats off to all the parents, schools and more importantly the kids and we can only hope that 2015 will be even bigger and more fun!! Isabel Moolman Cape Argus Cycle Tour – 8th March 2015. BELL Big 5 #5 – Hluhluwe Rhino Charge With the Spur Schools Series race at Fulton from the previous day still fresh in their legs, the kids set of with us to Hluhluwe for the final race in the Bell Big 5 series. The kids fuelled up on giant M&B muffins and dad and I on the even bigger cappuccinos for the busy day ahead……..always such a lekke adventure wherever we go for a MTB race with the littlies! 50km With already 10 km’s done, and feeling strong, Werner thought to himself that today was his day when he found himself away with Tyrone White, Joshua Nelson and Ryan Piercey. Tyrone and Josh started making it very tough on the little sandy drags which saw Werner fall of the pace first followed by Ryan. Werner did not give up and eventually caught and passed Ryan just before the half way mark. He kept the pace up to keep away from Ryan and to not lose too much ground on the two riders ahead. With about 15km’s to go Werner passed Tyrone who experienced some bad luck. Werner now found himself in 2nd place overall but he also met with misfortune when he punctured only 5km’s from the finish. He managed to get it sorted after a while but by then he had lost a lot of positions. He chased really hard to the finish to salvage whatever he could but ran out of track and found himself crossing the finish line very tired and disappointed. The race was won by Joshua Nelson followed by Ryan Piercey and Gideon Bruckner.
The first veteran rider across the line was Jasper van Vessem followed by Zauco van den Berg and Dirk Barnard with Werner taking 4th….. I had a really good start and felt strong. There was a split in the field within the first kilometre or so and I managed to go with it and found myself clear of my two closest rivals, Hayley Smith and Desiree Verwey. The pace just got faster and faster and soon it got too hot for me and I popped out the back. I found myself with about four other riders by the time we reached the fast single track sections. Whilst in the single track a small group of about five riders caught up with us and I noticed the presence of Hailey and Desiree. Our two groups combined and we rode together from there on. Some of the guys fell off the pace and some were too strong for us so it wasn’t long till we found ourselves (us three girls) racing by ourselves. We worked well together with me pacing on the front in the open stretches and Hailey and Desiree in the more technical areas in order for me to follow their line. Going up the big tar climb we were still together but as soon as we entered the very narrow, sandy single track section I started clipping trees with my handle bars and lost sight of the two other ladies. Some of the trees were too big to ride “through” (hehe) and to prevent myself from getting hurt I decided to ride cautiously to the end. I had a few oopsies here and there and the last 5 kays or so the finish was very sandy and tough. I was leaving for the Metro Police Champs the same afternoon so was just too happy to reach the finish in one piece (except for a sore ankle after one of those oopsies). Hayley and Desiree stayed together right up to the end and had to sprint for the line with Hayley taking it. 10km Warren had a strong start in the 10km race and only two other boys managed to break away with him. On the first uphill drag one of the boys fell off the pace. Warren and the other boy stayed together until they reached the single track about 4km’s into the race. It was here in the single track where Warren broke away to take the lead. He felt comfortable and just kept his pace steady but hard. Unfortunately one of the marshals sent him on the wrong route. He ended up doing about 20 kays and crossed the line almost 20 minutes behind the winner, Brett Drummond. Evan was the 2 nd under 11 boy home but would have still made the podium had his brother not get lost. It would have been nice to see both brothers on the podium but sometimes some things aren’t meant to be. Warren was upset for a little while but soon forgot about it and went jollying with the other kids on their bikes……..
The 4th of October saw us in Richards Bay for the Bell Big 5 awards function. Your top 3 results counted towards your overall position. Werner had a great result by placing 2nd overall behind Bradley Stroberg and thereby winning the veteran category with Dirk Barnard taking 3rd place in the vet category. I managed 3rd overall behind Desiree and Hailey, winning the veteran category. Warren won the under 11 category with Evan managing the 4th spot in that category. I felt really sorry for Evan being the only one in the family not making the overall podium but he wasn’t too fazed, knowing that he is still young with many more races ahead of him. He even said to me at one stage; “don’t worry mom, next year I will klap them!” We enjoyed some drinks with friends after the official prize giving and had a really nice time. Cheers to an even bigger 2015 event!
