WISE Mobile Active Living Centre WISE Mobile Active Living Centre WISE stands for Wellness Initiatives for Seniors Engaged. WISE Mobile Active Living Centre (WMALC) offers programs for Free older adults 55+ in multiple locations across Muskoka. See our list of locations below. New participants are required to complete Ages 55+ a program registration form, which is available at Welcome! www.muskoka.on.ca/seniorsprograms or onsite at your first WISE program. Our programs are funded in part by the Provincial Government and The District Municipality of Muskoka. Programs are free of charge and a donation box is available at each program location if participants wish to contribute. We are an active and good standing member with the Older Adults Centres' Association of Ontario (OACAO). Dinner, Documentary, and Discussion We are excited to bring this new, evening program for May. Join us for dinner, documentary, and discussion. The menu and recipes will be inspired by each program, to be prepared ahead of time but optional. We will provide the discussion questions in advance so you are able to take notes as we gain knowledge and understanding through this educational series. We can’t wait to explore and learn with you! Program Date Theme Documentary Description Tuesday, May 4 May the 4th Down to Earth: The Astronaut’s Perspective at 5:30 p.m. be with you! (NASA) (1 hour) Ever wonder what it’s like to see our planet from space? NASA’s astronauts will take you on a journey to the International Space Station, exploring the life-changing experience of an orbital perspective. View Earth as you’ve never seen it before: through the eyes of an astronaut. May 5th. National Astronaut Day. Tuesday, May 18 Wonderful Fresh Water: Our Planet (Netflix and WWF) at 5:30 p.m. Waters Experience our planet's natural beauty and (1.5 hours) examine how climate change impacts all living creatures in this ambitious documentary of spectacular scope. In this episode: The need for fresh water is as strong as ever. However, the supply is becoming increasingly unpredictable for all manner of species. Learn about the animals that depend on the resources of fresh water and how the changes are impacting their habitats and behaviours. Virtual Village Have fun with neighbours and friends (new and old) on Zoom, Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. This program will include themes and a variety of discussions, games, activities and more. The program theme is optional and a way to add a bit of fun to each program. Once you register for this program, you can select the dates and programs that work best for you. The Zoom log in will remain the same for this program. We know it can take a village to keep us all connected, hope to see you there! Virtual Combined Fitness Class Join Katelynn, CCAC Fitness Instructor, on Zoom for an interactive combined fitness class geared towards older adults 55+. This program runs virtually on Monday and Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. excluding statutory holidays. This non-impact class incorporates a safe cardio workout, balance training, strength and endurance training, stretching, and lots of fun! We want to encourage you to stay active and healthy. Please participate in our fitness programs at your own risk and the intensity level that is right for you. Visit our website www.muskoka.on.ca/seniorsprograms for our Combined Fitness Handouts. Dance Fit Dance away the winter blues with this Latin-inspired Dance Fit class! Join Jenni Allsopp for a fun aerobic workout that incorporates moves from Latin dances such as salsa, mambo, merengue, and samba. Each class will culminate with flexibility exercises and stretching. This program will run virtually for eight weeks on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. beginning Tuesday, March 23 and ending Tuesday, May 11. Spaces are limited. Urban Pole Loaner Program Urban poling (also known as Nordic walking) has toning, calorie-burning and posture benefits. Like cross-country skiing but without the skis, Urban poling offers a core workout, takes pressure off your hips and knees as you walk, helps balance your blood sugar, and much more. Interested in getting outside in our spring weather and trying this fun and beneficial exercise? Borrow a pair of Urban walking poles from WISE Mobile Active Living Centre! We have both Fitness and Activator poles available for loan free of charge to interested participants. Pick up for the poles will take place at the Community Services Hub, 169 Pine Street, Bracebridge on Tuesday, May 11. Please contact us if you need alternate arrangements for pole pick ups. Poles available are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Please call our Information Line to reserve your set of poles and arrange a pick up time. Fitness with Poles Join Katelynn, CCAC Fitness Instructor, on Zoom for interactive exercise classes featuring Urban walking poles! Sometimes it is too cold, too hot, or too wet to use your walking poles outdoors. Urban poles are an ideal exercise tool for indoor stationary exercise. Use your own poles or borrow a set from us (please see the above information on how to borrow Urban poles). This program will run virtually for five weeks, beginning Friday, May 14 and ending Friday, June 11. A seated class will be offered from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. and a standing class will be offered from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Please choose the intensity level that is right for you. Fitness BINGO Need a little motivation to incorporate a bit of physical activity into your day? Fitness Bingo might be just what you have been looking for! Registered participants will receive a BINGO card by email. Each week day, we will email you the ‘physical activity of the day.’ Complete the activity and mark it off on your card. The first participant to complete the pre-determined game will win a $15 gift card of their choice. Please note, participants who do not have internet access may still register. We will send you your card by mail and call you with the daily activities. Interested in participating? We are currently in the middle of our second game. If you would like to participate in the next round, please register by calling our Information Line. We look forward to moving and playing with you! Tech Support for Seniors This 4-week course introduces participants to various tools available to them to make cell phones and computers user-friendly for those with hearing loss. Each week participants will be introduced to various new features and be guided through the process of accessing, setting-up and trying them out on their own devices. Features include: visual strobe signals, alerts to environmental sounds, real-time automated captioning during video-chats/virtual groups (Zoom, Google Meets), speech-to-text, personal sound amplification, and more. This virtual program will take place on Tuesday afternoons on Zoom, beginning Tuesday, May 18 and ending Tuesday, June 8 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Spaces are limited. Intergenerational- Letter Learners Are you an older adult 55+? Are you interested in making a difference in a child’s life? Want to show younger generations the art of letter writing? Become an Intergenerational Letter Learner Volunteer and start making a difference in a child’s life. Each month you will prepare a package with a letter for a child in Muskoka. The package will contain a letter written by you and some fun and interactive activities for the child. Once a child receives your package each month they will create something special to send back to you. Our program will provide you with the tools and supplies to make the match a success! Call us for information on this volunteer role and how to get started. Pen Pal Program Our Pen Pal Program gives participants an opportunity to share stories and build a relationships with one of our volunteers in the art of letter writing. If you enjoy letter writing and receiving mail, this program may be for you! We are currently accepting new participants and volunteers for this program, give us a call to find out more information. LifeWorks LifeWorks provides supports and resources to assist people in dealing with everyday issues and concerns about family, health, life, money and work. Their services include seniors’ mental and physical health including free counselling services and pandemic supports and resources. Our team has partnered with LifeWorks to offer these services at no cost to our participants. For more information on LifeWorks, contact Seniors Programs for further details.
