SEAL 2021 INTRODUCTION In 2021 Albert Park College will provide a Select Entry Accelerated Learning Program for Year 7 students who have exceptional academic ability. The program began in 2011 with our first Year 7 cohort and today the program operates from Year 7 through to Year 10. The program is built upon highly successful accelerated learning programs found at selected government schools around the state. Acceleration to challenge The Select Entry Accelerated Learning Program provides an opportunity for students to progress more quickly through secondary school and to undertake challenging learning experiences that are tailored to meet the needs of students’ capable of outstanding academic achievement. There is a greater emphasis on higher order thinking skills, independent learning and research. Course content is compacted so that a normal Year 7-10 program is covered in a 3-year period via a comprehensive and specific SEAL curriculum. Enrichment is provided by broadening content, understanding, experience and skills to a level appropriate to the students’ stage of development. Extension provides an in depth study and the integration and application of knowledge at a higher level. Students can begin to pursue VCE units in Year 10 to provide them with a sixth or seventh subject. Exemplary students may have an opportunity to complete a first year university subject in Year 12. Acceleration throughout their education Students whose families wish them to enter the Select Entry Accelerated Learning Program will be required to participate in a selection process. Those students who are accepted into the program will be grouped together in two Positive Education groups when entering Year 7 and will remain with this core class until the end of Year 9 (provided they continue to meet the academic requirements of the program). High demand, high challenge Students in the Select Entry Accelerated Learning Program will take the same subjects as all other students in their year level. The difference will be in the complexity of the work and the rate at which it is completed. Year 7 students within the Select Entry Accelerated Learning Program will take the following subjects as a group; English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, French and Positive Education. The Select Entry Accelerated Learning group will take the following subjects in mixed classes with other Year 7 students: Sport Education, Leadership and Create electives from a range of subject areas. This allows for the development of social relationships within a broader range of their peers. SEAL 2021 THE SELECTION PROCESS The selection process consists of four parts: 1. Completion of the SEAL testing program. In 2020 students, will complete the testing program on Saturday 16 May 9 – 12 pm. The testing program is skills based rather than curriculum based. It is designed to identify student ability rather than acquired knowledge. 2. On completion of the testing program student referral forms are to be completed by the student’s Year 6 teacher and parent or carer. These forms are to be submitted to Albert Park College. 3. Students whose teacher and parents or carer referral forms and test results indicate that they have the potential range of skills for the program will be invited, with their parents or carer, for an interview during July 2020. 4. Please note: Final selection will be consistent with the state-wide DET placement policy. If your child is ill on the test day, please contact the school as soon as possible.
