THE INNER PATH OF THE TRANSFORMATION LEADER A Journey of Creation and the Possibility for Leaderful Impact The word “transformation” has become ubiquitous in the world of organizational change, especially in today’s hyper-turbulent, unpredictable, complex, and ambiguous world (“VUCA”). However, in order to truly leverage the power of “transformation” we need to transform the way in which we understand the term: from that which applies primarily to organizational structures, processes, systems and institutions to that which pertains to the consciousness from which those very structures, processes, systems and institutions arise. For those of us who see ourselves as transformation leaders, such a notion of transformation necessarily implies that to catalyze transformation in others necessarily means we must also catalyze transformation within ourselves. The Inner Path of the Transformation Leader: A Journey of Creation and the Possibility of Leaderful Impact is a 6-month cohort program that takes you on a deep journey of personal leadership growth and development. A journey in which you create the possibility for impact around you by transforming the very landscape of your own consciousness as a leader. The fundamental focus of this program is your own inner development as a transformation leader. Inner development, however, requires time to unfold—it rarely happens in a two- or three-day workshop. The activities, practices, commitments, and conversations in which you engage over the duration of the six months of this program will act as a sustained forcing function for your long-term growth as a leader. As you grow over time in your inner leadership—in your capacity to transcend your own inner uncertainty, hesitance, and emotional triggers and to act, instead, from a place of intention, purpose and vision—so too will you grow in your outer leadership—your ability to readily adopt the skills, practices and thinking needed to catalyze higher performance in the human systems around you. This program promises a profound breakthrough in who you are as a leader, and in your capacity to catalyze profound change and evolution around you. Copyright Michael Hamman 2021 1
Who is This Program For? This program is for anyone who is called upon to lead within a complex environment in which the nature of that complexity leaves them somehow feeling “in over their heads”. Someone who recognizes that the nature of the complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity—both around them and within them—is currently beyond their capacity to act with acuity, clarity, and grace. Someone who, nevertheless, has a deep yearning to move beyond their inner limitations—and to better leverage their inner gifts—in order to more fully embrace the power and scope of their vision, and to make real its potential for deep and sustained impact in the world. Such a person could be an agile team or program coach, an executive coach, an agile enterprise coach, or an organizational change agent or OD (Organization Development) consultant. It could also be middle-tier manager or top-level executive. Anyone who is committed to having their impact in the world be a match with their vision for that world—whether that world be a team, a program, a business, a church, or a city council. When Might You Be Ready? The Inner Path of the Transformation Leader is a rigorous program, requiring intensity of engagement and commitment. The program will be perfect for you if what’s true about you is: • You see a new possibility for yourself in your leadership and want to seriously upgrade your leadership capacity, both in your own inner leadership capability and in your capacity to impact the growth and development of the people and systems around you. • You currently work, or you anticipate working, in a complex environment—however you define that—which could form a kind of laboratory for your practice and learning. • Your work and home situation is such that you will be able to attend all sessions, including the 4 Day Residential (explained below). This is important since the developmental thrust of the program grows over time, and that thrust can only really happen when all are present for all sessions. Therefore, we set a very high bar for missed sessions, such as illness or an unexpected emergency. • You are ready to do the work needed for you to move to the next level in your development. This includes a deep drive, commitment, and intensity to stay with it even when the going gets tough, and to prioritize the program in the face of the many other competing commitments that will likely arise during the course of the program. Expected Outcomes By engaging fully in the program, you can expect to significantly upgrade both your inner and your outer leadership in the following ways: • You will experience a significant upgrade in your own inner leadership, which you will be able to readily observe and even measure for yourself. • You will find yourself with an increasing level of confidence and manifested ability in your leadership, even as you face challenges (and opportunities) which might currently feel daunting or even overwhelming. • You will dramatically increase your skillfulness in the arena of relationship, communication, and group dynamics. As a result, you will find yourself being far more effective in your ability to facilitate groups and teams toward increased relationship intelligence and, hence, high performance. • You will grow new skills in one-on-one coaching at all levels, but especially in the area of coaching and mentoring other leaders. • You will have immersed yourself in (over the course of the six months), and come to integrate into your leadership, a body of distinctions and practices which hang together into a highly cohesive whole. • You will be eligible for IC-Agile Certification for Leading with Agility (IC-LEA) Structure of the Program The six-month program has two basic segments. The first segment, which is around 3 months long (consisting of approximately six virtual video-conferencing program sessions) focuses on the context of our own inner transformation. Looking through the lenses of adult developmental psychology and ontological inquiry, we first uncover ways in which we make meaning of our world, and how that meaning-making determines our capacity to act in relation to the situations and circumstances we find most challenging. From such an examination—through deep inquiry, group practices, and live coaching, all of which unfolds over the course of the six months—it becomes possible to shift the meaning-making context which shapes how those situations and circumstance occur for us, opening the way for greater capability and intended impact in our world. The second program segment begins with a 4 Day Virtual Residential, during which the entire cohort comes together (for now, virtually over zoom). During the 4 days, we continue to deepen the work of inner transformation, while moving more firmly into the realm of relationship and relationship systems. We will work extensively with large group processes, conversation practices, the nature of genuine partnership and co-leadership, and a deliberate deepening of the cohort’s emotional field (the “We” space). The Virtual Residential is followed by a second 3-month period which consists of another set of six whole-cohort virtual sessions. During this part of the program, we will continue to expand our inner transformation into the realm of relationships, and relationship systems, expanding on the work we’ve begun in the Residential. In addition to the 12 cohort sessions, we will periodically offer participants 1-on-1 coaching/mentoring and coaching sessions. Over the course of the program, each participant will have both a Personal Leadership Development project and a Leadership Impact project. The program will culminate with each participant creating for themselves, and sharing with the cohort, a portfolio of Leadership accomplishments and Triumphs. This final portfolio will form a kind of program commencement Copyright Michael Hamman 2021 3
(which of course is both the completion of one thing (a “graduation”) and the start of something new) for that participant. #1. Setting the Stage Introducing ourselves. Mapping the territory of the program. (Special 3-hour session) Establishing a baseline of workability for the program (agreements and commitments). Your first deliberate sensemaking conversation. Continuing to reflect on your leadership. The distinction of “sharing” vs “reporting”. #2. Beginning the Dive Developmental Theory and the architecture of meaning-making. Into Ourselves and the Confronting our inauthenticity. Beginning to examine The Gap – Architecture of Our between intention and impact. Beginning to dive more deeply into Meaning-Making Action Logics as domains of possibility. (HW: Read About each of the Action Logics –from Diplomat to Magician). #3. Stepping into the Gap Action Logic vocabulary. Diving more deeply into the Gap; Between Our Intention examining our blind spots. We are that who we are is a product of and Our Impact our past: our future is a projection of the past. Introducing the distinction of “possibility” (An option, is an alternative that you develop out of your past – out of experience. A possibility, on the other hand, comes from your commitment to the future.). Reflecting on the nature of your own predominant Action Logic vocabulary. Deliberate Sensemaking conversation. #4. The Power of Reflecting on our Action Logic vocabularies and how we see them Language and the Practice played out in our leadership. Examining the nature of language of Deliberate and the power language has in how we see the world and make Sensemaking sense of it. We look at the ways in which our speaking determines Conversations our own way of being, as well as the manner of occurrence in the world around us. Here we dive deeply into the very foundation of how we make meaning (or, rather, how it makes us) in order to provide for ourselves more ready access to the source of how we show up in our leadership. The 1-2-3 of the deliberate sensemaking conversation. HW: Notice the nature of your speaking and listening. What does that appear to generate in terms of effects in your world, in your relationship with others, in your leadership? #5 Opening to the domain Reflecting on speaking and listening and on the nature of of Relationship languaging. Being with another. Deeper dive into deliberate sensemaking conversations. Practicing in triads, and the role of the reflector. VIRTUAL “RESIDENTIAL” During our 4-Day Virtual Residential, we will significantly deepen the sense of connection and relationship within our system, and further explore the outer reaches of our own leadership, both as individuals and in relationship with others. You will discover the impact of your leadership on others in ways that will ground you in your overall leadership journey. Furthermore, you will ground yourself in your own leadership stand—that for which you stand both in your leadership and in relation to the impact you intend in the world around you. Copyright Michael Hamman 2021 6
You will take a deep, experiential, dive into the nature of relationship systems and venture beyond the places we usually stop when relating with, and working with, others. You will receive the results of your own personal Leadership Development Profile, and will have ample opportunity to begin to process what it teaches you about your own capacity for meaning- making and its impact on your leadership. You will continue to practice Deliberately Developmental Conversations and will begin to expand the practices learned there into small group Deliberately developmental conversations as well as Shared Sensemaking Conversations. Throughout the 4 days, you will experience a variety of group activities as an aid in helping to uncover the nature of group dynamics and how you might, as a facilitator, leverage those dynamics to help groups raise their intelligence and align around common purpose. Over the 4 days, you will design an alliance with a cohort “buddy” who will be your accountability partner throughout the remainder of the program. In many ways, the Residential is the heart of the program as well as a launching point toward even deeper engagement, as you start to expand out from—but in no way leaving behind—the focus on your inner leadership to a keen attentiveness to the impact you have on others and on the organizations in which your leadership shows up. #6. Re-grounding In this session we devote ourselves to reflecting on the impact of ourselves post- the learning and developmental opening that got created in the Residential Residential. #7. Distinguishing Leaders create from what is, not from what they prefer. This is “Integrity”, what it means not the same as “going with the flow” or “accepting what is for us to be in Integrity happening”. I said leaders create from. It is a starting point, not with who we intend an end point. Leaders create from their boredom, from their ourselves to be as leaders disappointment, from others’ boredom, from others’ disappointment. They start there, and then take it where they say they want it to go. In this session, we look more deeply at what this takes, and consider that “integrity” means to be congruent with who we envision ourselves to be in our leadership, and in our impact in the world. At this point, we also take a deep dive into the practice of Shared Sensemaking Conversations as a way of being more deliberate about the sensemaking that always already determines how we make sense of the challenges and situations we face. #8. Topic related to In this session, and in subsequent sessions, we explore the Relationship Systems and systemic nature of relationship systems, and we introduce a Systemic Consciousness human technology for exploring the ways in which human systems get constituted and the ways in which they unfold within an emotional and relational field. #9. Topic related to Relationship Systems and Systemic Consciousness #10. Topic related to Relationship Systems and Systemic Consciousness #11. Integration #12. Completions (Special In this session, each cohort member will have an opportunity to 3-hour session) share the nature of their development and learning. This is a truly creative expression of deep personal impact and gratitude that can take any number of different manners of expression. Final closing circle for this cohort.
