Monday 20 September Year 12 & Year 13 – Assembly, Sports Hall Dear all, “Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it.” – Albus Dumbledore (J. K. Rowling) More than this the words we speak and write define us throughout our lives. Can we write the correct words in order to score the point? Can we use words to spin a situation in our favour? Will we be remembered for the words we write and say or are we destined for obscurity and the malaise of an ill- defined argument? This week, in particular, has made us very aware of the power of our words. Your help and assistance at open evening was immense, and as staff we are always left humbled by your kindness and contribution to the continuation of our community. But Anna and Priya had to stand up and speak about what it is to be at Rosebery. The words they chose, alongside the Year 8s, Ms Allen, and Mr Lach all try to frame not just who they are, but what ‘we’ represent. These will have been words that they took a long time choosing. Year 12 are left reeling, or enamoured, by the scale of vocabulary that appears to define their new courses. In the first two weeks of biology alone I must have given them a whirlpools worth of new words. Whilst always banging on about the need for specificity of language at all times. Year 13 now realise that the personal statement for UCAS or apprenticeships is a real thing that is unavoidable, necessary, important. They are now gazing at pages in various degrees of blankness tasked with the job of saying, “I am a great person. Pick me.” These statements are completely possible for everyone. But I do always feel great empathy at how difficult it is to write ourselves up. Of course, when any teacher gives advice, we make it seem easy. But that is because you are all very easy to champion. Because you are great, you are kind, and you are capable of achieving great things. So, my advice is to listen to the teachers and take some of the words they give so willingly, even when you are not sure you believe them about yourselves. But with any power, comes the ability to corrupt. The powerful nature of words gives them the ability to corrupt many aspects of our lives. Much of their power belongs to the listener or reader. How will what you say be interpreted? How will what you write be used? That power lasts. We must be wary that things cannot be unsaid or unwritten. Think of those who have fallen because of ‘posts’ from years before. What about friendships ended because of 6 seconds of snap chat time. We can rewrite the narrative of events that will forever change the history of those events. But should we? So, as you journey into this vocabulariously exciting world. Remember the power of the truth that you can speak. Choose the right words. Choose the compassionate words. Make sure your story is woven with words that are your own. Have a delightful week. Mr Phillips
