Zoned Programs

• Most NYC families have a zoned middle school which is based on their home address
   • This means that children living in a designated area (zone) around a specific school have priority to
attend that school, no other students can apply
• District 24 has historically been a Zoned Only district for middle school, but families now have a
  choice.
To find your zoned school:

Dual Language Programs

● Some middle schools also offer Dual Language programs
● These programs teach students in both English and another
  language (Spanish)
● Classes are made up of both English Language Learners, who share
the same home language, and English proficient students
● The goal of the program is for students to learn how to speak,
read, understand, and write in two languages, and learn about and
  appreciate other cultures
● Admissions Priority – Zoned, District, Borough, City -wide

                    Community School District 24
Screened Programs*

● Superintendents partnered with school communities to thoughtfully
determine if and where screened programs should exist
● Students will be ranked based on a composite of their course grades from
  fourth grade
  ○ This includes: ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies
● State tests, attendance, and behavioral grades will not be used as criteria
● Student priority group can be found in your MySchools account profile
* Formally know as Beacon ( PS/IS 119 & IS 73
                                            )

● In order to increase diversity, equity, and access across the district, D24
applied for and was awarded a Title I grant from NYS
● Through grant initiatives, students across the district benefit from expanded
curriculum that culturally responsive practices and integrated STEM

● Families now have improved options in District 24: providing the choice to
apply to our Title I middle school STEM Programs in sixth grade
● By using their MySchools account, families can select to apply to their zoned

Offer Letters

I n the Spring you will get your child’s Middle School offer letter.
  ● You can access this letter in your MySchools Account; you can also opt to receive this letter by
      mail.
  ● This letter will tell you where your child has been accepted to attend Middle School and next
      steps.
Accept your child's offer by the deadline provided in the offer letter.
  ● This secures your child's 6th grade seat at that school.
  ● You can accept the offer online through MySchools or by contacting the school directly.
  ● We encourage you to accept your child's offer as soon as possible to secure their seat.
Once you have accepted the offer the next step is to register your child in the school.
  ● Contact the school to ask about next steps and set up a time to register.
  ● Use the registration checklist to learn what documents should be provided to the school at the
      time of registration.

  about waitlists and next steps.

● You must accept your program offer by the deadline or the seat will
  be given to another student

Waitlist - schools.nyc.gov/waitlists

● A middle school program’s waitlist is a list of applicants who applied to that program but did not
receive an offer to attend it.
● If a seat becomes available at a program after offers go out, the school can make an offer to the
first student on that program’s waitlist:
   ○ Your child is automatically on the waitlist for any program that you listed higher on your
child’s application than the program where they got an offer.
        ■ For example, if your child got an offer to attend the program you listed third on their
application, they will automatically be added to the waitlist for your first - and second -
           choice programs.
   ○ When waitlists open (after offers go out), you have the option to add your child to additional
       programs’ waitlists.
   ○ Waitlist offers are made based on seat availability, admissions priorities, and admissions
methods according to your seat group.
   ○ If a school can make you a waitlist offer, they will contact you directly, and you would have
approximately one week to accept or decline that offer.
