Knights Kronicles A Publication of District 33K Lions District Governor’s Message Fellow Lions and Leo Club Members, We have started out this Fall season with an extremely busy September. Tonight we topped off this month with a D33K Advisory meeting in Malden at Anthony’s Restaurant. There were 110 members in attendance. There were 37 club representatives in attendance. We had lots of good reports from our Committee Chairs and a lot of good ideas to help us make this a successful year. For those who could not make the in person meeting we had them on a Zoom meeting. We’ve started visiting our clubs, both in person and virtually. Everyone seems ready to get busy. PDG Doreen has updated the D33K website with all current information. Please take time to get acquainted with all the info that is now at your fingertips. The District directory has been distributed to all in attendance at the Advisory. We will have the Zone and Region chairs get directories out to the clubs who were not present. There are a lot of club activities going on in our District. Check out the District calendar on the web page. We’ve been trying to visit as many outdoor events as possible. Our next Advisory will be on November 15th in Bellingham at the Coachman’s Lodge. Hope we’ll see you there. Registration forms will go out in October. New membership materials will be sent out to all clubs by our Global Membership Team. Make sure you take advantage of all their ideas to help your club get stronger with more members. Please contact them if you need help with putting together membership drives. We are always available to induct a new member for your club. That’s all for now. Stay well. Enjoy the beautiful Fall weather. Yours in Service, Peg Needre, District Governor District 33K
Lions Youth Speech Contest This is the 39th year the Massachusetts Lions have held a state-wide public speaking competition open to all high school students. However, this is the first year someone screwed up and left me in charge of the competition within District 33K. I am following in the very large footprints of last year’s District 33K and State Speech Chairpersons Roxana and Mike Camporeale of the Framingham Lions. They steered the committee through the pandemic and successfully created an all virtual state-wide competition. The State Champion last year was Poorvi Mohanakrishnan of District 33K, sponsored by the Marlborough Lions. She spoke eloquently on the topic “Is Winning Everything?’ I want to thank the Clubs that participated in the competition during the difficult circumstances of last year. Those clubs were: • Ashland • Framingham • Hopkinton • Greater Ashland • Marlborough • Medfield • Medway • Millis • Quincy • Sherborn This year’s topic is “Why Is Accountability Important?” I expect to hear many amazing speeches from the students, with many differing viewpoints being expressed. My goal for the District this year is to restore participation to pre-pandemic levels for both clubs and students. So how can you help? I’m glad you asked! There are many ways you can help, but I’ll concentrate on two this evening. First, your Club can hold a competition. This can be as simple as sponsoring a student onto the Zone competition, as intense as holding a Club level competition, or something in between. Many Clubs let their local school hold a competition and sponsor the winner. On the other hand, holding a Club level competition always captivates the members, and it solves the King or Queen Lion’s problem of finding an after-dinner speaker in December. Walpole Lions, the Walpole High School Speech and Debate Coach is a personal friend of mine, she’d love to hold a competition and have you sponsor one of her students, or work with you to send students to a Club level competition. A teacher who had students participate in the competition when she taught in Methuen just moved to Malden Catholic, and I’m optimistic that the Malden Lions will work with her to sponsor a student at the Zone level, whether through a school competition or a club competition. Other clubs, if your local school isn’t co-operative, you can appeal directly to students through your local paper and/or social media; it only takes one student. I am ready to
help your Club with ideas about how your Club can participate, just reach out, my contact information is in the directory. Second, your Club can make a donation. District dues DO NOT fund the speech competition within the District, dues only fund the competition at the State Convention. Prizes for students and expenses from the Zone level through the Mid-Winter are funded through the generous donations of individuals and Clubs becoming Speech Sponsors. To that end, I have provided flyers on all the tables with the details. Clubs and individuals that become Speech Sponsors are recognized in the Mid-Winter ad book and on a banner during the Mid-Winter competition. I want to thank those Clubs and individuals that were Speech Sponsors last year: • Blackstone • Boston Chinatown • Holliston • Malden • Marlborough • Medfield • Norfolk • Plainville • Randolph • Lion Richard Flynn of Waltham Lastly, I am a Committee of one. Zone and Region Chairs, you are members of the Committee by extension, since you will hopefully be holding Zone competitions during the first half of January and region competitions during the second half of January. That said, if anyone is interested in joining the District 33K Youth Speech Committee, I’d love the help. Please get in touch with me if you are interested. As I said earlier, I’m in the directory. The Timer has indicated that my time is almost up, so let me wrap up with the three big takeaways: 1. Year 39 – Why Is Accountability Important? 2. Participate 3. Donate Thank you. Steve Small, Chairperson Lions Youth Speech Contest

Save the Date Greetings Fellow Lions: On Sunday October 3th Brookline Bank is sponsoring the Wellesley Lions Club and the District33K Eyemobile at the 80th Veterans Parade. The parade line up starts at 12:00 N and runs for about 1.8 miles from the Wellesley Community Center at 219 Washington Street to the intersection of Central St and Crest Road. This is a great opportunity to show our pride and showcase the Lions in this area. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Wellesley Lions. After the parade the Wellesley Lions will be having a booth and selling cotton candy. That event runs from 3:00PM to 7:00PM (there will be fireworks at the end of the evening). This is a fun event and we would love your support. If you are planning to attend please email me so we can have enough refreshments for everyone. Yours in Service; 2VDG Ivette Wellesley Lions Club Secretary
Upcoming Events: A New Look! I have great news, and perhaps NOT so great news for some of you! Thanks to the Club who are now following the requests to provide more information on our District calendar we are getting several events posting in a single day! This is awesome news because that means you're communicating effectively with your club event chairs! It also means we are making some changes! When we get a flyer sent by email as we've mentioned it is challenging to put them into the bulletin because our visually impaired users get a blank page for every image we put in. So months ago we asked you to stop sending us images. Well, thanks to the new website you can send them again. Here's what we did. A) You can upload your flyers directly to the calendar like you have always done -- the calendar is here B) If you want to post your flyer separately, we've created a new page for that which you can see here: -- Page of event flyers -- please note that under the calendar you will find other tabs -- one is for Clubs, one for District, one for Multiple District. Please consider checking those tabs multiple times. C) We'll continue to post upcoming events (see below this rant!) Thank you again for making use of the technology, it makes all of our lives easier and allows us to share information with Club members who may want to know more about other Club's events!

District 33K Lions Eyemobile District 33K Lions, I would like to report on the Eyemobile since reopening in September 2021. Currently there are 13 Directors and 4 Associate Directors on the Board for 2021 – 2022. The new Eyemobile has been in service since the Fall of 2017. In 2019 we serviced 2,632 clients for 27 Clubs and the Town of Stow School Department. In 2020 we had 8 events serving 135 Clients before we had to cancel 15 bookings that were scheduled as well as all training because of the threat of Covid 19. Our web page is currently being updated and we are meeting with web master Mark Gibbs on October 17, 2021 to finalize additional changes. This year the Eyemobile is going out for parades and publicity. The Eyemobile committee has decided that it is too risky because of the current outbreak of the Covid 19 variant to allow any clients into the Eyemobile. Secretary drove the Eyemobile to the Marlboro parade with member Mark Gibbs this month. Cissy also drove the Eyemobile to Wrentham for member Jeff Hall on September 11, 2o21. Eyemobile events (driver Cissy) in Wellesley with 2VDG Ivette Mesmar: Wellesley Lions parade on Sunday, October 3, 2021 Ivette welcomes Lions to join her in this parade. October 11, 2021 Wellesley hosting Marathon Monday. Saturday, October 2, 2021 Karen and Ted Abbett will be driving the Eyemobile for the Quincy Lions at the annual Quincy fair. The Medfield Lions have scheduled the Eyemobile for a parade in December. The Eyemobile committee is having ongoing meetings on how and when we can open the Eyemobile for screenings. We will be setting new protocols and rules for use of the Eyemobile. This information will be passed on to all clubs when it is finalized. The Eyemobile is currently meeting at the Chateau in Norwood. Ted Abbett, President D33K Eyemobile
District 33K Membership DISTRICT 33K GLOBAL MEMBERSHIP TEAM (2021-2022) District 33K Lions, As we slowly emerge from the pandemic, we have the chance to look back over the past year and a half and assess the many different ways that we practiced and supported our lionistic ideals. While admittedly not the way we have always done them, the result is clear, they worked. Under your direction, our clubs have not only survived the worst of Covid-19, and all of its associated variations, but found other ways to accomplish our goals. What more can we say, but thank you, for your dedication and continued commitment to lionism. This year, one of District Governor Peg’s goals is membership. Clubs within District 33K are encouraged to take advantage of the newly formed Global Membership Team. We are here to support your efforts in increasing and retaining your clubs membership. At our first District Advisory, held on September 27th, we: · Introduced the Global Membership Team, consisting of PDG Margaret Menard, Chair, 1st VDG Steve Langley, RC Chris Gaboriault and PZC Paul Ciccolo. · Distributed a Membership Resource folder to each club present. It is our hope that each club within our District will receive and use these brochures to supplement their membership programs. · Kicked-off our District 33K Membership Challenge. Both the club with the highest percentage of growth and the lion who sponsors the most NEW lions, can win a prize. · Distributed a Club Survey pertaining to club membership issues. Those present were asked to complete this short survey, in an effort to identify problems that a club might be encountering. · The Membership Team will be scheduling upcoming Membership Roundtables for our clubs. If any clubs, are planning to hold a membership drive/event and are in need of any help and/or materials, please contact the GMT Team. A few of our clubs have already held membership drives/events and we would like to thank you for all your support. We encourage all clubs to consider holding membership drives/events. Thank you for all you do. PDG Margaret Menard, Chair VDG Steve Langley RC Chris Gaboriault PZC Paul Ciccolo

Diversity Blanket Service Project Continues The outpouring of donations, effort, and support of our Diversity Blanket project has been unbelievable. You have stepped up day after day to donate squares, yarn, and joined with fellow Lions to attach squares of all sizes. This project is ongoing. We're still looking for the following: 8" x 8" knitted or crocheted squares -- please weave in your ends so we have a cleaner edge. We DO recommend using acrylic yarn and please feel free to use nearly any stitch. The only stitches we are recommending against are the ones which leave "loops" on the top. Please do not use "fun fur" type yarn on these. You can see some of the blankets which we have already assembled by following this link to the GDrive folder where you'll find pictures of those blankets which you helped create! This project will continue indefinitely. We have plenty of yarn at this time so please do not hesitate to ask if you need some! We'll figure out how to get it to you. After Thanksgiving, we are going to add to this project. Currently, a small group of Lions is working on throws and hats for distribution this Christmas. However, we're thinking ahead! One of the best ways to keep warm is to wear a hat. We know that places like Pine Street Inn, a Warming Center, and other shelters across our District provide hot meals for the homeless, shelter, and other necessities. We thought it would be a great idea to set up a once a month group where we can create hats. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BRING YARN! We'll provide the yarn until we run out of the donated yarn. We have a SUPER EASY crochet pattern for a standard hat that is suitable for men, women, or children. You can see a set of ladies hats by following this link. Each hat takes less than two hours from start to finish. Our goal would be to start making them at the beginning of December 2021, and make as many as possible by October 31, 2022 and have them ready for donation the first week of November of 2022. Please watch this space for additional information! Deadlines and Reminders Keep in mind we are doing our level best to get our newsletters out for the end of each month. Please make sure you continue to put your club events in the Calendar and that you are emailing your flyers to 33ksunshinenotices@gmail.com and we'll add them to the website!
