midland counties PHOTOGRA IES P T HIC ND COUN FEDERATIO photographic federation e-newsletter DLA MI N FO U N D E D 1907 Mary Jenkins APAGB 29 August 2019 To all my colleagues and clubs in the Midland Counties Photographic Federation It is now some weeks since the AGM in June when I recently retired from the post of secretary to the Midland Counties Photographic Federation. I would like to thank everyone for the surprise gifts that were presented to me on that day, pencils, a little book of words and a small laptop computer. The pencils -they will last through few crossword puzzles and keeping Cribbage scores. I always used to bring my pencil box filled to the brim with ‘useful’ gadgets to meetings and the unpack and repacking of exhibitions In the Little Book of Words there are some good wishes from members of clubs, much appreciated because communication with clubs was a part of the job that I really did enjoy. The laptop is great, I can sit the garden with my feet up and browse………. During my time as secretary I was honoured to serve with several different MCPF Presidents, and I thank them for their guidance and encouragement during that time. ‘The object of MCPF is to consider and provide means for the mutual benefit and encouragement of Federated Societies and their Members’ It covers so many different things. It provides a list of Judges and Lecturers, workshops, seminars, exhibitions and competitions of all sorts, giving everyone an opportunity to progress. You may have noticed that in my reports to General Meetings I had little to report and that is because the events and administration were covered by other Council members. It has been good to have been part of such a wonderful and hard-working team. Looking back it has been an adventure and I did enjoy my personal challenge to “get it right”. It all began in the days when I was naïve new delegate for Yardley Photographic Society and attending a General Meeting. I knew nothing of the management of the MCPF before then. I gave an elderly gentleman, George Uzzell, a lift to the meeting, and he navigated me right through the centre of Birmingham on a Saturday afternoon. Before then, for me Birmingham had always been a place to avoid when travelling around. And that was the beginning of the adventure. I was asked to give a vote of thanks, and before I knew it I was a member of council. It has been an honour and a privilege to be part of that team I thank everyone for the help and encouragement over the time during my term as General Secretary. Thank you to all clubs for your correspondence and communication over the years. I am proud to have been put onto the MCPF Roll of Honour, and Awarded the APAGB for my service, and of course also to have been associated with all you Midland Photographers. I shall miss you all. I sincerely hope that my successor will get as much enjoyment as I have in working with you, and I wish Christine a happy and enjoyable time with the job. With Kindest Regards Mary Mary Jenkins APAGB 11
IES T PHOTOGRA P midland counties HIC ND COUN FEDERATIO photographic federation e-newsletter DLA MI N FO U N D E D 1907 MCPF Archivist / Historian Dr David Moore EFIAP MPAGB BPE5 Mary Jenkins APAGB Mary had no particular interest in photography until the summer of 1983, when she was given a Canon Camera and two lenses. Highly delighted, she walked along the Canal at Tardegbigge and spent the day taking pictures of the boats and the locks on colour print film, although Mary was somewhat disappointed with the resulting prints. Sometime later, Mary was at work and admiring a colour print of a red rose in a vase on a window sill. It was a print by Denise Luke, a well known Midland exhibitor and member of Wall Heath Camera Club. Denise suggested that Mary should join a Photographic Society to learn more about printing and that is how she came to join Yardley Photographic Society in 1984 where she had a long association over 34 years. One of the first lectures that she attended was a slide talk by Dr David Wheeler, a member of Smethwick Photographic Society, who said his photography was different from his work, since he had the opportunity to be creative. She found the talk inspiring. Her first photographic interest was in slides and monochrome printing, with colour prints being reserved for pictures taken of family and friends. Mary then spent a period at work which involved printing images taken in an Electronic Microscope, which had to be entirely factual and show as much detail as possible. Mary also started to learn to be far more disciplined when she was processing her monochrome images in the darkroom. Her first club monochrome print was created in the loft of a Yardley club member, ably assisted with glasses of white wine supplied by her husband, who also cooked a meal. The print was of a robin perched on a bench in Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and was successful in some of the club competitions, and won the primary monochrome print section in 1985. She had some further success with slides, and won the primary slide section in 1993, and there were also a few other successes with slides in other club competitions In 1985 Mary was elected as Yardley Photographic Society Open Exhibition Secretary a position she held during a long period and successfully chaired many exhibitions with the support of her team from Yardley club members until her final exhibition in 2016. This involved entries, judging days, cataloguing, hanging the exhibition and returning the entries. During this time the exhibition became a well organised and slick event with a high quality entry from many competing clubs and it has under her stewardship continued to be an exhibition that exhibitors like to enter. Interestingly in the years Mary wasn’t elected to that position her home was used as the major delivery point and in the early years all the entries were sorted there with the necessary paperwork being completed. In 1990 Mary was elected to the selection committee, it was their task to choose the entries for the inter- club competitions where she remained an active member until 2016. It was however, during the early stages of this role that she started to attend the Midland Counties Photographic Federation General Meetings and was eventually nominated to represent Yardley PS as their delegate until 1995. Mary also attended various Midland Federation events and exhibitions. In 1991 Mary was elected Secretary of Yardley PS a post she held until she became Vice-President in 1997 and the following year was elected President, an office she held until the summer of 2003. After completing her five terms in office as President, in 2004 Mary was then elected to the post of External Exhibitions Secretary, supporting club members and encouraging and helping them to enter external club competitions and exhibitions a position which she held until 2016. 12

In June 1996 Mary was elected as a member of the MCPF Council and after serving for one year she was elected as Minutes Secretary a post she held with distinction until being elected General Secretary in 2001 a position she also held with great distinction until 2019. As General Secretary Mary was involved with keeping in touch with the member clubs, dealing with club matters, responding to correspondence, preparing the administration and agenda for General and Council meetings. During which time she supported no less than ten serving Presidents and very much more. During the twenty three years that Mary has served on Council she has always been involved with the various MCPF events, competitions, seminars and exhibitions where she has offered her support. In June 2006 she was elected to the MCPF Roll of Honour for outstanding service to the Midland Federation, she was also presented with a goblet for her ten years of selfless dedicated service whilst serving on Council. In 2009 Mary was elected to the APAGB Roll of Honour in recognition of her meritorious service over many years within the PAGB community of member Federations and affiliated club, an honour which gave her a great deal of pleasure. 13
IES T PHOTOGRA P midland counties HIC ND COUN FEDERATIO photographic federation e-newsletter DLA MI N FO U N D E D 1907 Almost every Photographic Society has its outings and Yardley was no exception. The idea behind the arrangement of outings was by its nature either to produce photographic results or for the members to enjoy the social aspect of the occasion. The picture below shows members and Dignitary’s at Snibston Discovery Park in 2010. The picture shows Mary Jenkins with members and officials attending a club outing. In 2015 Mary was presented with the title of Life Member of Yardley PS in recognition of her dedicated service and support over the past thirty four years. During this period of time she had been elected to seventy different posts which had included holding the position of President some five times which she had served with distinction. At the Yardley Photographic Society Annual General meeting held on Tuesday the 14 May 2019 it was announced that Mary was leaving Birmingham and moving back to Cambridge to be with her family. At the Midland Counties Photographic Federation Annual General Meeting held on Saturday the 8 June 2019 it was announced that Mary would be retiring from Council to move back to Cambridge. Although Mary had often said that she intended to take a back seat at the society it wasn’t long before she was offering to help in some activity or other, since this had been her way since joining Yardley PS in 1984. Without doubt Mary was a genuinely nice person in every sense of the word as shown during the many years I knew her since we were elected to serve on the MCPF Council in 1996. She has had a tremendous influence on so many people who had been fortunate enough to have met this truly gracious lady. I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of Yardley Photographic Society along with members from other Midland clubs for providing the historical information. historian@mcpf.co.uk 14

From this has grown her passion to capture the way light transforms a scene and to share those fleeting and unique moments.
