White Rock State School Guyala Gazette 22 October 2020 • Page 3 Garden Club Bounty The Garden Club meet every Tuesday and Wednesday at first lunch to tend to their garden located on school grounds. In Week 10 of Term 3 the students harvested their bean crop and shared their bounty with friends and faculty. Everyone who was lucky enough to taste the beans all agreed they were super sweet and delicious. Congratulations Garden Club, your hard work has paid off and we can’t wait to see your next yield. Performing Arts Showcase 2O2O Known in the past as our Spring Concert, this year it has become our ‘Performing Arts Showcase’. Students have been busy in Performing Arts singing songs, learning instruments and creating dances for their class Showcase performance. Preps and Year 1 have been creating a class dance about a season. Year 2 have been learning voice and instruments parts to a song from a different country. Year 3 are working in pairs to create a dance about an animal from their class theme. Year 4 have been learning songs on the recorder. Year 5 are working in groups to create a dance using symmetry and Year 6 are learning a pop song on ukulele. Unfortunately this year due to COVID restrictions parents won’t be able to attend our Showcase. However, students will still get to perform for their peers and teachers and the Showcase will be recorded for parents to view at a later date. Our Performing Arts program is very valuable for learning confidence and creativity and we are very excited the students will still be able to perform this year. We are also excited to be introducing some new awards this year for students who ‘shine’ and ‘strive for improvement’ in our program. We will keep you posted on how you can view your child’s class performance in the coming weeks. Julie Williams & Hannah Trotter, Performing Arts Obstathon Prizes Congratulations to all participants of this year’s major fundraiser – OBSTATHON 2020. Well done to all students who were able to raise some money and donate it to the school. Good news, the Obstathon prizes have been ordered this week and should arrive in a couple of weeks. In the coming weeks I will announce at which School Parade our highest fundraisers will be acknowledged. The highest fundraiser will receive their own trophy. 2nd and 3rd highest will receive a silver and bronze medal respectively. Any child who raised $100 or more will receive a medal in recognition of their efforts. And, of course, I will announce the ever important news of which class, for lower and upper school, won the PIZZA PARTY for raising the most money this year. A big thank you to Miss Falchetti who had a massive task of spending many long afternoons counting the money and recording individual totals, Mr Avery for helping set up the obstacle course and the Year 6 house captains for helping throughout the day. Once again, well done to White Rock State School and thank you.

White Rock State School Guyala Gazette 22 October 2020 • Page 6 Attendance Matters How important is attendance? Attendance is important because students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher and the class to build their skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent. Help your child succeed in school: Build the habit of good attendance early - school success goes hand in hand with good attendance! • Starting in Prep, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school. • Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read. • Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks. • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance. •A bsences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school - and themselves. Start building this habit in Prep so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important.
