Trojans, On behalf of Troy University’s Student Government Association, we thank you for your willingness to participate in our 2018 Homecoming Week. We have drafted together a week full of fun and exciting events! We expect Trojan Pride to be demonstrated in all aspects of the week, and Homecoming Week 2018 is just that, coming home. Our theme for this year is “Trojans Unite”, being an International University and having Alumni, Students, and Faculty from all different backgrounds we feel this best demonstrates what OUR Homecoming is, a unification of Trojans. The underlying theme is Superhero and we hope to see it incorporated throughout the entirety of the week. Homecoming Events For all of these events, we highly encourage all students to participate, attend, and enjoy. All of these events have sign up requirements in order for the Homecoming Committee to be prepared for each event. Dance Competition Organizations will organize and perform a dance that aligns with our specific dance theme: “Superhero” Organizations will be awarded points on participation AND additional points will be awarded to the placing organizations. Parade Float The Homecoming parade floats are for the enjoyment of the community and to showcase Trojan Pride. This year floats will be judged from top to bottom on relevance to theme “Trojans Unite”. We are excited about the renewal of floats this year. Banner Competition The banners will be displayed the entire week on campus to display our Trojan Pride. Organizations will be awarded points on participation AND additional points will be awarded to the placing organizations. Dodgeball Competition There will be a dodgeball competition this year open for ALL students to participate. Organizations competing for the Homecoming title will play in a bracket style tournament separate from those only competing in the dodgeball competition. Race Down University Starting at Tailgate Terrace and ending at Bibb Graves quad organizations and individuals will perform a relay race. To run in the race, you must be dressed up as a superhero and have three (3) people total for the race. Blood Drive Each organization must have 20% percent of its members successfully sign up and donate blood to the Blood Drive. Sign-ups will take place prior to the blood drive. Sign-ups will be online at www.redcrossblood.org before the blood drive begins. Homecoming committee will also provide an opportunity to register for the blood drive starting October 7th downstairs in TC for students who are NOT formally participating in homecoming with an organization. Members of participating organizations must sign up for the blood drive two weeks prior to the blood drive. Participants must sign-out after giving blood to receive credit for participation. Registration for non-organizational students will take place in TC the weeks before Homecoming. Haunted Arena Community Service Event At Haunted Arena, your organization must bring either a game or activity that is kid-friendly to receive full participation points. The activity you will bring will be decided on at one of the Mandatory Homecoming meetings. This event is in partnership with Panhellenic Council. International Food Day This event is to celebrate the progress we've made and the things that are yet to come for our University. This event will be held in Trojan Dining and will be filled with food, music, and a visit from Chancellor Hawkins. Pep Rally 7 | Troy University Homecoming Packet 2018
This year, we will have our Homecoming pep rally in the Janice Hawkins Cultural Arts Park. The pep rally theme will be “Cage the Cajuns” and we are encouraging people to dress up as cops and robbers. Talent Show Organizations or individuals will put up a performing group of up to four members. Organizations must put up at least one member to receive participation points. Registration for non-organizational students will take place in TC the week before Homecoming. Chalk the Quad Organizations will have the opportunity to show their creativity by chalking the Bibb Graves Quad to cheer on our Trojan Football players before the big game on Saturday. We ask that organizations incorporate player’s numbers and other football elements into their squares. Five percent of an organizations must be present and paint in at least one square to receive participation points. Palladium Pictures To receive full participation points, a total of 20% of your organization must have their picture taken. No partial points will be awarded. You will fill out a form with the Palladium AFTER you take the picture on a computer provided by their staff. This will ensure that points will only be given if a person successfully takes a photo. Anyone may come and have their picture taken. Homecoming Meetings Meetings will occur on September 13th, September 25th, and October 11th 8 | Troy University Homecoming Packet 2018
Homecoming General Rules: 1. All decisions made by either the Vice President of Campus Activities (hereafter referred to as “VPCA”) or the Homecoming Director with the VPCA’s discretion are final. They may be appealed in writing through due process to the SGA Supreme Court Chief Justice, who will then consult the Supreme Court. The appeal must be made using the Homecoming Competition Appeal Form provided in this packet. All appeal requests must be made about an organization’s own outcome in the competition. An organization MAY NOT request an appeal for a decision made about another organization. 2. Any organization planning to participate in Homecoming activities for 2018 must complete all proper forms and pay all fees as listed in this packet ON OR BEFORE the deadline: September 28th at 5:00 PM 3. If an organization misses the deadline, they may still participate in Homecoming events IF they submit the fee(s) and application(s) for the events they want to participate in by October 5th, by 5 PM. Organizations that submit applications and/or fees late will receive a fifty (25) point deduction from their overall Homecoming score. 4. ALL Homecoming Committee members are disaffiliated for Homecoming beginning Friday, Oct 26th 5. Homecoming Committee members may not turn in fees or applications on behalf of an organization. 6. Teams must compete in one division throughout the entirety of the competition. If two (and no more than two) organizations choose to compete together, they must compete as one team for the entire week in all events. This excludes Homecoming Queen candidacy. *Point deduction clause- PLEASE READ CAREFULLY 7. You will only receive full participation points if your organization reaches FULL participation percentages. If there are any discrepancies points will not be awarded. 8. Organizations will be disqualified if there is any abusive, threatening, or obscene language, jesters, or other actions. This includes any malicious behavior that would affect another competing organization. If an organization is disqualified, they will NOT be eligible to place in any event or receive any participation points. A disqualification decision is at the full discretion of the VPCA and Supreme Court Chief Justice. A final disqualification decision will be approved by the Director of Student Involvement and Assistant Director of Student Involvement. 9. Point deduction and final decisions are at the full discretion of the VPCA and Homecoming Director. 10. If a member of your organization accuses another organization of cheating or complains about a point deduction decision (or lack thereof) of another organization to ANY committee member, the VPCA and Homecoming Director reserve the right to deduct points from your organization. 11. To ensure fairness and confidentiality of the points organizations receive for placement in dance, banner and float, the Supreme Court Justices, the VPCA, the Homecoming Director, and the Rules and Points chair are the only people who will have access to score sheets and point documentation. 12. Individuals competing in group Homecoming events must be directly affiliated with the group with which they are competing (according to official IFC, NPC, NPHC, PanHellenic and other rosters). Each competing group must submit a roster of participants prior to the week of the competition, as noted in the 2018 Homecoming Schedule in this packet. Upon entrance into the competition venue, competitor rosters will be checked. 9 | Troy University Homecoming Packet 2018
13. SGA Senators, Executive Members, Freshman Forum Members (including Directors), and appointed officers in SGA may in no way affiliate or participate with an organization while working a Homecoming event. 14. All members of the Executive Branch (President, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Director of Administration, Vice President of Campus Activities, Director of Representation, and the Freshman Forum Directors), Homecoming Committee, as well as members of the SGA Supreme Court must disaffiliate from their organization on Friday, October 26th at 11:59 pm. Disaffiliation will be lifted Friday, November 2nd, at 11:59 pm. 15. Disaffiliation means that individuals may not wear Greek-affiliated apparel, share any social media pictures relevant to Homecoming competitions or queen candidates of their respective organization, or attend any Greek organization’s meetings. Disaffiliated individuals may not relay any confidential or pertinent information to their Greek organizations that may benefit their organization. 16. If necessary, members of the SGA Traffic Appeals Committee will be used in the event that the Supreme Court does not reach a quorum. Members from the Traffic Appeals committee will fill the vacancy necessary to achieve quorum. 17. Only the VPCA, Homecoming Director, Rules and Points Chair, members of the Supreme Court, and an SGA Advisor will be allowed in the scoring area. 18. The Homecoming Committee member responsible for a particular night’s competition (i.e. dance) will direct all SGA Senators and volunteers working the event. 19. Be sure to review the point deduction guidelines for competitions. 20. If time or location of an event changes, rules for tardiness may be adapted at the full discretion of the VPCA and Homecoming Director. 10 | Troy University Homecoming Packet 2018
Rules concerning a tie: 1. There will be no ties among first, second, or third place winners for any Homecoming event, nor will there be a tie for the overall Homecoming 2018 winner. 2. If there is a tie among any number of competitive organizations after the judge's’ initial tabulations, the judges will be asked to assign a number between 1 and 5 (1 worth the least and 5 worth the most) to each organization in the tie. An average will be taken from these scores, and the organizations will receive placement in that competitive event accordingly. 3. If further complications arise, the VPCA and Homecoming Director reserve the right to improvise all necessary measures to allow the judges to break the tie before points are awarded. Common Area Competition (Dorm and Department Decorating) General Rules: 1. Decorations must not constrict walkways for any resident. 2. No destruction of any resident property will be allowed. 3. No racial slurs or inappropriate language or phrases. 4. No audial media may be used on or in conjunction with any decorations. Rules concerning Banner: Theme: Superhero 1. Groups may use nothing larger than a Queen-sized sheet (no larger than 90” by 102”). 2. Banners will be laid out on the quad on Friday, October 26th NO LATER THAN 4 pm. Failure to bring a banner before 4:00 pm will result in point deduction 4:01-4:10 pm: 15-point deduction 4:11-4:30 pm: 30-point deduction 4:31pm - : Banner is disqualified 3. Groups may not use three-dimensional objects on their banners. The only medium an organization may use for the banner competition is non-glitter paint. 4. No audial media may be used on or in conjunction with the banner. 5. No electronics may be used in the presentation of banners. Rules concerning Dodgeball: 1. Games shall start on time according to the bracket that will be released the week prior to Homecoming. 2. If a team is more than 5 minutes late they forfeit the first set, this repeats until the team shows or they are forfeited completely from the game. 3. People competing for an organization must be a current active member. 4. The boundaries will be discussed at the start of the game, this will be determined by location. 5. Costumes are permitted and highly encouraged, however any article attached to the person participating in the game is considered part of his/her body. 6. If a ball is caught the thrower is out. The team who catches it may choose one member to return to the game. This player must have already been competing in that specific game and previously eliminated. 7. If a player steps over a boundary line that player is out. 8. Players can only hold onto balls for 10 seconds. If a player is still holding the ball for longer than 10 seconds that player will be out. This will be determined by the officials. 9. Games will end once all of the members from one team have been eliminated. 11 | Troy University Homecoming Packet 2018
10. Each round is best of three. Therefore, in order to move on a team must win 2 matches against the same opponent. Rules Concerning Relay Race 1. Individuals competing must be current active members of their organization they are competing for and cannot be a current Troy University athlete. Each race will start at the starting line labeled in front of tailgate terrace and end at the finish line in front of Bibb Graves Quad. 3. Each team will be given a baton they must hand off two successful times in order to finish. 4. The team with the best overall time wins. 5. The handoff points will be labeled, and judges will be at each point. 6. People may line the street in order to cheer for the race. If an individual interferes with a race by entering the field of play that organization may be disqualified by the VPCA, Homecoming Director, and the Supreme Court. 7. Participants must be in a super hero themed costume. 8. Costumes must consist of a minimum of shorts and shirts. 9. No throwing batons to the next runner, baton must be handed. 10. In order to participate each individual must sign a release form. Dance Competition General Rules: Theme: Superhero 1. Each dance performance may be no longer than five (5) minutes. Competitors from each organization will have exactly forty-five (45) seconds to prepare themselves on stage for the performance. 2. No more than fifteen (15) participants will be allowed on the stage during an organization’s performance. No participants may come fully off of the stage. If this happens, points will be deducted. If a part of the body slips over the stage, but the dancer doesn’t come all the way off the stage, no points will be deducted. The set-up, performance, and position times will be timed and recorded by a representative from the Supreme Court and Homecoming Committee. 3. ONLY those participants involved in the dance competition will be allowed backstage for the entirety of the event. 4. No tumbling or cheer stunts will be permitted in the dance routine. This is to eradicate the potential for serious injury. The dance stage is secure but is not fit for tumbling or stunts. 5. After the five (5) minute mark, any music still playing or movement on stage will result in disqualification. There will be at minimum two clocks keeping time. Any discrepancy with timing will be judged by the Homecoming Director, VPCA, and the Supreme Court. 6. The judges reserve the right to deduct points from a group’s score for any vulgarity. Profanity and violence will under no circumstances be tolerated. 7. Music must be submitted along with all of their participants for Dance by October 16th at 5 pm in 215 Trojan Center. 8. No dance routine may, in any way, mention, characterize, or resemble any Troy University organization or person(s) associated with Troy University (whether student(s), administration, faculty, staff, or any person(s) having graduated or attended the University) without the direct written consent of said organization or person(s). 12 | Troy University Homecoming Packet 2018
Furthermore, approved impersonations MUST be in good taste. Written consent must be provided by October 26th at 4pm. 9. There may be no “skit” segments during any group’s dance. Any group using elements resembling a skit during their dance may have points deducted, at the discretion of the judges. 10. Each group MUST send a representative to the dance competition venue at 6:15 pm the night of competition on Tuesday, October 30th for a brief overview of the night’s events. Any organization that does not send a representative to this meeting will receive a five (5) point deduction from its final dance competition score. 11. Any objects that may hinder either the dancers’ performances or the audience’s view of the performances are strictly forbidden. These include, but are not limited to, the following: balloons, flags, posters, and banners. If a member of a competing organization breaks this rule, he or she will be asked to leave and the organization to which he or she belongs will receive a ten (10) point deduction from its final dance competition score. Rules concerning costumes and props (dance competition): 1. Any type of footwear with metal on the sole is prohibited from use on stage. This includes cleats, both metal and plastic, tap shoes, and clogs. All footwear must be worn for the entirety of the dance routine. If an organization breaks this rule, there will be a fifteen (15) point deduction from the competition score. 2. NO GLITTER may be used on any part of a costume, prop, accessory, or on a dance competitor’s body anywhere. This includes body glitter, glitter in hair, and glitter in makeup. If an organization breaks this rule, there will be a fifteen (15) point deduction from the competition score. 3. The use of freestanding props is strictly prohibited. A freestanding prop is any object that must be moved on or off of the stage. No props may be used unless they are attached to a dancer’s costume. 4. All costume props, (hats, gloves, glasses, etc.) must be appropriate, and may not contain any vulgarity or racial slurs. If there are any questions about the appropriateness of props or outfits, please contact the Homecoming Director. 5. Costumes and props must be touching the body at all times during a performance. If at any time a costume or prop leaves the body during a performance and touches the ground, the judges will use their discretion to decide whether or not to deduct points. 6. The throwing of props off of the stage is HIGHLY discouraged, and the judges will use their discretion to decide whether or not to deduct points. Parade and Float Rules: Theme: Superhero Due: University Avenue on Sunday, October 28th at 4:00PM *Please read carefully, as some float guidelines have changed. 1.Every organization’s float will be judged on 3 factors: use of the 2018 Homecoming theme (Trojans Unite/ Superhero) Trojan pride, and creativity. 2.Your float can be no bigger than 9 feet wide, 12 feet high, and 18 feet long. IF A FLOAT FAILS TO BE WITHIN THE DIMENSIONS IT WILL BE AN AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION. 13 | Troy University Homecoming Packet 2018
3. You are NOT allowed to bring any excess decorations or decorative structures to University Avenue. Everything must be on the float within the dimensions once submitted to be graded. If something is added after submission on University Avenue that will lead to automatic disqualification. 4. Floats will be submitted on University Avenue promptly at 4 pm. Any floats that are submitted late will receive point deductions as follows: a. 4:01-4:10 pm: 15-point deduction b. 4:11-4:30 pm: 30-point deduction c. 4:31pm - : Float is disqualified The floats must be PARKED on University by 4:00 or point deductions take place. 5. The time and location for the parade lineup will be announced after the City of Troy meets to discuss. This will be clearly communicated to homecoming chairs. 6. The judges reserve the right to deduct points from a group’s competition score for vulgarity. Profanity and violence will under no circumstances be tolerated. If, at the time of the parade lineup, the VPCA, Homecoming Director, or members of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce find a float in any way vulgar or offensive, those persons reserve the right to remove the float from the parade. In such an event, the organization associated with that float will be removed entirely from every Homecoming Competition. All participation points will be forfeited, as well as any points gained from placement in any event. Troy University is heavily represented annually in this parade, and any type of vulgarity or offensiveness will not be tolerated. 7. No furniture (chairs, tables, couches, desks, coffee tables, lamps, etc.) will be allowed on a float unless it is somehow incorporated into the larger float theme. Floats will not be allowed to participate in the parade if they consist solely of furniture placed on a vehicle; nor will they be allowed to participate if the furniture is the sole focus of the float. 8. No items may be thrown from a float. Also, no items may be thrown onto a float. Members from a float’s organization are encouraged to walk alongside their float. Members are allowed to hand out items from the ground as they walk alongside. 9. No tobacco products or alcohol will be permitted on or around the float, in a vehicle pulling the float, or along walking segments. 10. There may be NO talking, acting, singing, speaking, dancing, or chants while judges are reviewing a float. Any group failing to follow this rule will risk severe point deductions. *More information about parade routes, times, and locations will be provided during the mandatory Homecoming meetings as information is made available. 14 | Troy University Homecoming Packet 2018

We are excited about this year’s theme: Superhero! We are excited about the rejuvenation of floats this year for the grandeur they will have! This is Troy University’s biggest opportunity to show appreciation to the city of Troy. Professional floats will again be available featuring your chosen message saluting Troy University.
