“The future’s in the air I can feel it everywhere Blowing like the wind of change…” — Song by the Scorpions Director’s Corner Alexis R. Faust Executive Director The Winds of Change In any given year, the fall season gets me thinking about change — change in the seasons, in the environment, what birds we see, and in our schedules. This fall, as the world swirls around us like a divisive tornado of unrest, change seems to mean so much more than it ever has before, at least in my lifetime. It is essential, critical, imminent — it is coming. I feel we are standing on the brink of a revolution. Someday, historians will look back, Volume 48 Number 4 tapping their fingers on the pages of some tome of our century, describing 2020 and ISSN 1097-1548 2021 as those pivotal years in human evolution where we finally began to truly care — for each other and for our planet. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: • Director’s Corner: I am reminded of the great works of biologist and author, Lewis Thomas, who wrote, The Winds of among many other books, The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher. Naturally Curious Chipmunk Hoarders Ryan Hodnett By Nicole Conrad Education Manager Climbing trees Eastern chipmunks, Tamias striatus, are commonly found in Ohio and are members of the squirrel family. Out of the 25 species of chipmunks, 24 are found in North America and one species is found in Asia. Eastern chipmunks have reddish-brown fur with five black stripes and two white or tan stripes on their back with a bristly tail. They have a dark stripe of fur through their eyes and a white stripe above and under their eyes. Their striped patterns help James St. John camouflage them into the forest floor by breaking up their shape to confuse predators. Eastern chipmunk habitats include forests and forest edges. They have also adapted to living in suburban neighborhoods. Easter chipmunk Eastern chipmunks are omnivores with a diet that includes nuts, seeds, berries, fruit, buds, insects, earthworms, slugs and bird eggs. They are rodents and have incisors that continuously grow. Their teeth are specialized for gnawing with the front of their incisors covered in hard enamel. As the back part of their teeth wear away, the edge of their teeth are sharpened like the blade of a chisel. One of the things chipmunks are famous for is the size of their cheeks. They have cheek pouches that, when full, are almost the size of their head! Eastern Ryan Hodnett chipmunks are extreme hoarders and obsess about finding food. As they find food they stuff it in their cheek pouches, then carry their food to their burrows for storage. They overwinter sleeping in their burrows, but they are not true hibernators. Instead, there are times they are active in the winter, sustaining themselves on the food they stored and hoarded in their burrows. Eastern chipmunks are intolerant of others and will aggressively chase other Gilles Gonthier chipmunks away. They mark their territories with urine, feces or their scent glands. Though they aren’t very social with each other they will use alarm calls to alert others of predators. Their predators include hawks, coyotes, fox, snakes, Eastern chipmunk with nut cats and dogs. When Eastern chipmunks feel threatened they make sounds including chips, chucks and trills. During mating season they will tolerate each other, but return to their loner status when mating season is over. Their gestation period is about 30 days with females having 2-8 in their litter. The young stay with their moms for a couple Cephas months until their mother kicks them out their burrows to find or make a Stuffed cheeks burrow of their own.
