Editorial: December 2018 Kia ora Koutou I am sure everyone is looking forward to taking a well-earned break over the Christmas holiday period. I certainly know we all are at ANCAD. Hopefully, we all get sufficient time out to recharge our batteries so that we can come back to work in January refreshed to begin another year. Nevertheless, it has been a good year for ANCAD. Acknowledgment of our work is always nice. Thanks to Takapuna Rotary for awarding us the Arthur Coombes Cup for services to the community. And Repair Café Auckland won an award from the Auckland Community Zero Waste Awards: Power of the People - For demonstrating commitment, effort and leadership in the community. Thank you to the dozens of people who completed our end of year survey which was sent out via Survey Monkey. Your response is very important to us and will enable us to inform our planning process for next year and our project delivery roll out. It has been a tough year for many community organisations and the feedback we are getting is that capacity is stretched and sustainable resourcing a great more difficult to find. We have noticed a drop off in numbers at various public meetings. We know that people are just so stretched with service delivery they cannot easily attend meetings. We are not exempt in this. It has been a really busy year for all ANCAD staff. 3
In November we had Alan Johnson as a key note speaker at our last regional network meeting. Alan Johnson is a social policy analyst for The Salvation Army's Social Policy & Parliamentary Unit. He is author of The Salvation Army's 2017 State of the Nation Report. This report provides excellent information on what is really happening at a grass roots level. It provides an alternative view on issues impacting in the sector. ANCAD has always appreciated the work of the Policy Unit and we see Alan as a ‘national treasure’. Sue Barker and Dave Henderson presented to invited community organisations in Parnell this month on the Charities Act which is up for review. They are both members of the Core Reference Group for the Review. They have designed and are managing a survey for independent community consultation research, feeding in to their contributions to the review of the Charities Act 2005. This is the first time since 2005 that the Charities Act has been reviewed and it is vital that charities and the community sector’s voices are heard. So please let us know if you have missed the link to the survey and we can send you one. I hope you all experience a wonderful holiday break. We wish you and your staff, family and friends a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. ANCAD is officially closed from 20 December to 7 January 2019. We look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year, Happy 2019! Ka kite ano Yvonne Powley Chief Executive Officer 4
