Rededication Ceremony for WW1 Veteran
Postponement date to be advised
Rowan Miller, regional co-ordinator for
the NZ Remembrance Army discovered
that Private Albert Rainbow, WW1
veteran had not received an official
memorial, rather he simply had a
wooden cross with a hand painted name
on it.
Uniquely he was also one of only 500
POWs from the First World War. He
was killed in an accident in 1922,
before his service medals had even been
awarded.
Rowan successfully applied to
Veteran's Affairs to have a service
memorial instated for him and it was
intended to have a rededication
ceremony just prior to ANZAC Day to
unveil the new memorial. Due to recent
events, the rededication ceremony is
postponed until further notice.
The service will be attended by a
number of dignitaries including Hon
Barbara Kuriger and a representative of
the Australian High Commission. Any
interested members of the public are
welcome to attend.
Following the service there will be light
refreshments at the Piopio
Cosmopolitan Club.
