Friday 15th April - Good Friday Coffee Morning & Easter Egg Hunt The Village Hall hosted an Easter gathering at the start of the long weekend - which proved to be a lovely warm, Spring day. There were teas, coffees and hot cross buns on offer as well as Easter crafts for the children. The Easter bunny had also made an appearance and left lots of eggs for the children (..and adults!) to find! Vicki Smart We were extremely lucky with the weather so were able to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful grounds of the hall. An Easter Bunny?
Brookthorpe Village Hall News! Nigel Bone our Secretary of 13 years retires from the Village Hall Trust Nigel, a resident of Brookthorpe, has been a resourceful and proactive member the Trust for many years, in fact since 2009 and has played a crucial role in our well- being and ongoing success. He has been the principal link for bookings and initial contact, liaising with numerous organisations and authorities and promoting evening events as well as taking and producing the minutes of regular meetings. His wife, Margaret, has also been proactive over the years as a helper whenever called upon. They will both be greatly missed but I know they will continue to take a great interest in our future. Thank you Nigel and Margaret, from all the Trustees, its been a pleasure working with you both over the many years. Eric Hibbert Photo taken at their Golden Wedding Anniversary Party this year Cotswold Homes Ltd set up their Temporary Sales Office in our Car Park Cotswold Homes are building 19 homes on what was previously known as Wynstones Drive. The Sales office facility will remain at the bottom of our car park for a period of six to nine months, in return for which the Village Hall, a Charity in its own right, will receive a welcome regular income during these somewhat lean times and post Covid. Update from Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon Parish Council The Parish Council held its ‘Annual Meeting of the Parish Council’ on the evening of Tuesday 3rd May 2022. The main business related to the election of: 1. The Chairman: Councillor John Hendry was elected. 2. The Vice Chairman: Councillor Paul Gaze was elected. ● Councillors Rhodri Rhys and Dave Casper are the other two Councillors forming the Parish Council. ● The Parish Council is still two Councillors short of its compliment! You will have seen from previous editions of the ‘Missing Link’ that appeals have been made for individuals to consider joining the Council and being able to contribute to your Community. ● The link below will take you to the Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon Parish Council website which contains useful information. Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon Parish Council, Gloucestershire (brookthorpewithwhaddon-pc.gov.uk) ● Since the February edition of the ‘Missing Link’ the Council has met and dealt with the usual business of such things as Planning Applications, Highways matters and other issues affecting the Community. ● The Parish Council has been active with matters such as the Stroud District Council ‘Local Plan’ which is shortly due to come before the Government Inspector. A major issue affecting the Community is a proposal (G2) in the Plan, that is proposing a development of 3000 houses, associated infrastructure and two schools. This site is proposed to meet the housing needs of Gloucester City. (Stroud District already has sufficient sites identified to meet its own housing forecasts). ● The Parish Council is funding a ‘Speed Monitoring’ initiative to cover Upton Lane and Haresfield lane within the 30MPH zones. The Annual Parish Meeting will be on Tuesday 24th May 7.0 pm The next Parish Council Meeting will be on Tuesday 7th June 8.0 pm Both at Brookthorpe Village Hall Everyone Very Welcome! Thank you email Anne Szabo - clerk@brookthorpewithwhaddon-pc.gov.uk 01452 536940 THE ROLE OF PARISH COUNCILLORS The main role of a Parish Councillor is to represent the views of all residents within the Parish and to listen to, and understand, the views and needs of different groups in the community (such as young and older people). As a Councillor, there is a responsibility to be well informed, especially about diverse local views. Councillors cannot assume that they represent the interests of electors without consulting them. Parish Councillors are elected representatives, not volunteers or employees, and serve for a four year term, unless co-opted or elected in a bye-election when they serve until the next election. They must apply the law and comply with the Parish Council’s Code of Conduct. Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon has 6 Parish Councillors, although at the present time there are 2 vacancies. Councillors contribute to the work of the Council by suggesting ideas, influencing policy, engaging in constructive debate and by responding to the needs and views of the community. Councillors comment on proposals to ensure the best outcome and vote to enable the Council to make decisions. Individual Parish Councillors cannot make decisions on behalf of the Council, but they can actively lead and engage with local projects. Parish Councillors have no powers outside of the Council meeting. Councillors from different backgrounds better represent the whole community and possess different enthusiasms, skills, attitudes and interests. Some Councillors work with ideas while others are very practical. The Parish Council needs a wide range of skills to work as a team. Occasionally there will be a conflict of interest requiring sensitive judgement, and the need to take difficult decisions in an open, honest and reasoned way. Councillors are also required to act in an ethical way and to declare an interest when necessary. Yoga classes in the Village Hall have returned!
