Senior Fitness Classes offered at The Maplewood Senior Center THE ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION EXERCISE PROGRAM Arthritis Exercise is a group, chair exercise class for people with arthritis. Attending this class is a safe way to stay active, reduce pain, and move more easily. It can help you feel less tired and boost your mood. You will practice stretching, breathing, endurance, and balance exercises tailored to your ability. THE ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION TAI CHI PROGRAM Arthritis Tai Chi is a group exercise program that uses Sun-Style Tai Chi, which includes agile steps, high stances, gentle movements, and relaxed breathing. Benefits of Tai Chi include: Increased joint flexibility and range of motion; Improved balance, coordination, concentration and memory. Food & Nutrition Assistance Offered at the Maplewood Community Center OUR H.O.M.E. FOOD PANTRY Our H.O.M.E. Food Pantry is open to low-income Garden City residents, and Garden City Public School students and their families. The pantry is located at the Maplewood Community Center and is by appointment only. The pantry hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9am-12pm. Please call 734-793-1859 to schedule an appointment. FOOD COMMODITIES: The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) TEFAP distributes surplus and government provided food. Open to low-income Garden City residents (individuals & families). Distribution is the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 10am-1:30pm at the Maplewood Community Center. You can register by visiting Our H.O.M.E. food pantry or by calling 734-793-1859. Please note: The income requirements for TEFAP Michigan are as follows: One person household $24,280, Two person household $32,920, Three person household $41,560, Four person household $50,200, Five person household $58,840. Focus: HOPE Focus: HOPE provides boxes of food to low-income Garden City residents who are 60 years of age and older. Distribution is the 1st Wednesday of each month from 11:30am-1:00pm, at the Maplewood Community Center. If you have any questions, for eligibility requirements, or to sign-up please stop by Our H.O.M.E. Food Pantry or call 734-793-1859. CONGREATE HOT LUNCH PROGRAM A nutritional hot lunch program for ages 60 and over. Served Monday–Thursday at 12pm. The cost is a suggested donation of $3.00. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance by calling 734-793-1874. LIQUID NUTRITION The Maplewood Senior Center is a liquid nutrition distribution site. The nutrition supplement is given out on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 9am-12pm. This program is designed for seniors who have a debilitating disorder or require supplemental food intake to meet their nutritional needs. A doctor’s prescription is required. For more information and/or to sign up please call 800-851-1454. MEALS ON WHEELS Volunteers deliver hot meals to eligible homebound seniors Monday - Thursday. A frozen meal is delivered on Thursday for Friday. For more information and/or to sign up please call 800-851-1454. COULD YOU DELIVER MEALS WITH YOUR WHEELS? Volunteers deliver meals one day a week for approximately one hour and are reimbursed for their route mileage. Please consider this volunteer opportunity. (November 6, 2020) ($79) This trip includes shopping at the Essenhaus Market, time for lunch (on your own), holiday shopping at Blue Gate, and time at E & S Grocery Store. Also included is The Gypsy Soul Market at the Michigan Event Center where you will find hundreds of booths loaded with unique crafts and vintage holiday goods. Space is limited to 40 guests, day starts at 6am. Shipshewana on the Road and Frankenmuth! (November 7, 2020) ($39) Shipshewana will be located at the Birch Run Conference Center where you will have 2 hours of holiday shopping. Then hop back on the bus to head to Downtown Frankenmuth for 3 more hours of holiday shopping. Payment in full, non-refundable. The Island Casino Fall Color Escape! (November 10-12, 2020) ($239 per person, double occupancy) During your stay enjoy bingo, slots, table games, the spa, great restaurants and time to explore downtown Escanaba. You will receive slot play each day. We will stop for pasties before we head home. Must be at least 19 years old. Single rooms are $79 more. Sisters Christmas Catechism at the Potter Center! The Gandy Dancer Holiday Brunch and Christmas Shopping at Tanger Outlet! (November 29, 2020) ($75) Depart Westland, travel to Gandy Dancer in Ann Arbor for Sunday Brunch and a jazz trio playing the best holiday sounds. After brunch we will travel to Tanger Outlets.
