WINTER SAFETY TIPS Winter is around the corner. Winter storms & cold temperatures can be dangerous. Stay safe and healthy by planning ahead. Here are some helpful safety tips: Dress warmly in loose-fitting, layered clothes and wear a hat, mittens and boots if you go outside. Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs. Seal drafts from doors and windows. Close off unused rooms. Keep heat sources at least 3 feet away from furniture and drapes. Never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water. Avoid using extension cords to plug in your space heater. Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure it is working properly. Check smoke and CO detectors if they are working. Test batteries monthly. Drink warm liquids - no caffeine or alcohol. Alcoholic drinks cause your body to lose heat faster. Pay attention to any travel warnings & avoid icy roads. Stay indoors and drive only if it is necessary. Walk slowly on snowy and icy walkways. Let someone know where you are going and when you will return. Have a winter emergency kit in both your car & home (water, canned/no-cook food, first-aid kit, flashlight/ extra batteries, medicines, shovel, cell phone, road maps, emergency flares, blanket, etc.). Watch for signs of hypothermia (uncontrolled shivering, slow speech, memory loss, stumbling, sleepiness & extreme tiredness). Keep the gas tank of your car full to avoid freezing the fuel line. During the extreme cold, leave water taps slightly open, so they can drip continuously to prevent them from freezing or breaking. Allow heated air to reach pipes beneath the kitchen & bathroom sinks. Shoveling snow can cause several health concerns, from muscle strains to heart attack. Use an ergonomic shovel, warm up, keep up with the snow as it falls, push snow instead of throwing it, take breaks, keep hydrated, and use legs if you must lift. When you walk on ice and snow, be a “penguin”. Check on elderly friends, relatives and neighbors to make sure they are doing alright and their homes are heated properly. Source: Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) UPDATES ON DRIVER’S LICENSES/ID CARDS Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced few important information: The expiration dates for driver’s licenses and ID cards have been extended an additional three months (November 1, 2020 to February 1, 2021). This new extension also includes those who have October, November, December and January expiration dates. As a result, the expired driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until February 1, 2021, so the customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The expiration date for valid driver’s license held by drivers who are 75 years of age or older have been extended for a period of one year past the licenses' current 2020 expiration date. They who have 2020 driver’s license expiration date do not need to visit a facility for renewal until shortly before their birthday in 2021. License plate stickers remain extended until November 1, 2020 as those can easily be renewed online: www.cyberdriveillinois.com Schaumburg Township Supervisor Timothy M. Heneghan and the Township Officials wish you Happy Holidays! 6
