CAN YOU FIND IT? PRESCOTT’S COURTHOUSE PLAZA By Ed Wisneski Prescott’s Courthouse Plaza reveals much about the rich history of Arizona’s first territorial capital. To discover it often requires a close inspection of the sidewalks, plaques, and buildings, including 12 on the National Register of Historic Places. Look up, look down, read the inscriptions. That’s where you’ll find the answers to the fol- lowing questions: 1. Constructed in 1894, this building once served as the jail and firehouse in Prescott. What is it used for today? 2. What is the name of the store embedded in the sidewalk on Whiskey Row? 3. What art gallery on Whiskey Row has an owl on its rooftop? 4. What building has gargoyles beneath its roof? They were supposedly parodies of some of Prescott citizens in 1901. 5. Who was Solon Hannibal Borglum? 6. There is one parking meter on each of the four blocks surrounding the courthouse. What is their purpose? 7. Prescott once had a community dog. What was his name? 8. What year was the statehood tree planted? 9. What saloon on Whiskey Row has glass squares in front of its entrance? 10. The oldest building in the square was built in 1892. It also has an owl on its roof. On what street is it located?
