Cooking and refrigerator worked from bottled gas and if she ran out she was out and no way to get more. Dad would come home from his job in the city and work out in the fields until he was no longer comfortable even with tractor lights on, having fi rst milked the cows and fed the hogs. Mom would have been gardening all day, keeping her house white glove clean, working on meals for us at breakfast and dinner, doing the milking and hog feeding if Dad were late or she could fit it into her daily chores. She was known to fi re up the tractor and work in the fields some too. Though I heard them complain occasionally about lack of funds and would it not be nice to have some electricity, they did not complain about their work or their daily lives. Amazingly, I and most everyone I knew back then would describe us as a happy family … and we were. And so with memories of a happy Mom who lived a life unknown to modern day housewives and lived it happily, with parents who lived their lives together happily and worked to raise their children happy and healthy, I snuggled down with my book – on my Kindle – and contacted friends via social media. Quarantine Sketchbooks “It’s an artist’s duty to reflect the time in which we live” said blues singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone. An art teacher from Western High School, Melinda Moen, was inspired by this quote when pivoting her curriculum to distance learning. She decided to assign her drawing and painting students art journal prompts each week that reflected on how the Coronavirus is affecting their lives while they are away from the classroom. She called this project, Quarantine Sketchbooks. Although some students already had art materials at home, many students found themselves without art supplies to create with. Not letting limitations stop their creativity, many began the project by sewing their own handmade sketchbook. They used supplies from around their house like cereal boxes, scrap paper and dental floss. Each week students received different art prompts to use as their guide. They ranged from themes like “Toilet Paper Still-Life” to “Found Poetry Collage.” More artwork can be seen on their digital gallery page: Instagram.com/QuarantineSketchbook By Tania, Gabriel, Karen & Jacqueline. B is for Book Stirs Your Emotions Bailey’s Story by W. Bruce Cameron is one of my favorite books so far. It definitely warmed my heart. Bailey The moment Bailey is born, he is looking for a purpose. He falls into the hands of many people. But the moment Bailey leaps into Ethan’s arms, he knows he’s in the right place. Going to the farm and playing with the flip is just the first part of Bailey’s purpose. Will Bailey realize that, even with the bad things that happen, he must stay true to the boy he loves? I had not read a book like this one! The point of view surprised me and there are many funny quotes. I can relate to the characters’ actions and thoughts to my life. My favorite component of this book is that it is well written and stirs your emotions. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Bailey is an eighth grader who loves to read whenever she’s not dancing or with her friends.
