WENDT CHARACTER SCHOLARSHIPS PRESENTER: DR. ANNALEE WARD The Wendt Character Scholars, participants in a program of the Wendt Character Initiative at the University of Dubuque, represent a select group of students who are committed to living lives of integrity, justice, and compassion in service of others. These competitive and conditional scholarships are awarded to students who agree to live into the Wendt values, participate in weekly meetings, complete assignments, and be involved in ongoing community service. The Wendt Character Initiative promotes excellent moral character and lives of purpose consistent with the University’s Mission and Christian identity. FACULTY CHARACTER ADVANCEMENT AWARD PRESENTER: DR. ANNALEE WARD Nominated by students, this faculty member has advanced excellent moral character in teaching, learning, or living. Students considered how faculty have fostered students’ formation and/or understanding of good character with regard to the Wendt virtues of integrity, characterized by truth-telling and stewardship; justice, characterized by fairness and diversity; and compassion, characterized by the Golden Rule in service of others. Rafic Sinno WENDT CHARACTER ATHLETES OF THE YEAR PRESENTER: DR. ANNALEE WARD The Wendt Character Athletes of the Year best demonstrate qualities of excellent moral character, good sportsmanship, and the virtues of integrity as characterized by truthfulness, honesty, and stewardship; justice as characterized by treating all people fairly, respecting diversity, and practicing Christian love; and compassion as characterized by living by the Golden Rule in service of others. BARBARA AND DIXON COTTINGHAM SERVICE TO HUMANITY ENDOWED SCHOLA RSHIP PRESENTER: DR. ANNALEE WARD This scholarship is awarded to a student who is at least a sophomore, with a grade point average of 3.0. The recipient must demonstrate personal integrity, compassion, positive thinking, and strong leadership skills as well as embrace diversity and serve humanity. Luke Weber SCHOLAR-LEADER OF THE YEAR PRESENTER: DR. ADAM SMITH University of Dubuque’s Scholar-Leader Honors Program is designed to enrich the college experience of our higher-achieving students. This award recognizes students who have consistently demonstrated the values of the Scholar-Leader Honors Program: excellent scholarship, a spirit of inquiry, personal integrity, and leadership. ALLISON CRESS SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHARACTER AND COMMUNITY IMPACT PRESENTER: MR. RAFIC SINNO Allison Cress left her mark on the world as a cherished family member, friend, and talented artist. She passed away from her battle with cancer two days after graduating from Hempstead High School. Throughout her battle, Allison remained positive and steadfast. She never let cancer touch her spirit. Her spirit always reflected love, care, grace, faith, and creativity. This award is presented to a student who has impacted the community by taking initiative, remaining steadfast, and exhibiting goodwill. Allison is the daughter of Holly and Rafic Sinno, assistant professor of business, and sister to Ashley, Ameena, and Zak. Brianna Rolf WILLIAM N. BERG AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN STUDENT ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH PRESENTER: DR. ADAM HOFFMAN Presented annually to a junior or senior environmental science/biology student who has demonstrated excellence in designing and analyzing their senior research project. Sponsored by Dr. Robert Dillinger. Julia Rodewald ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD PRESENTER: DR. ADAM HOFFMAN This award, given by the environmental science faculty, recognizes an environmental science major who demonstrates, in addition to academic excellence, a commitment to environmental stewardship. The recipient must provide outstanding leadership in promoting environmental quality, both on campus and in the broader community. ROBERT M. MILLER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BIOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE PRESENTER: DR. ADAM HOFFMAN Presented annually to a senior who has demonstrated academic excellence in the areas of biology and/or environmental science. This award is sponsored by Dr. Robert Dillinger. Samuel Zebarth DR. RICHARD E. COWART AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN B IOLOGY PRESENTER: DR. ADAM HOFFMAN This award was established in memory of Dr. Richard E. Cowart, former University of Dubuque professor of biology, and is awarded annually to a junior or senior student who has demonstrated academic excellence in the area of biology. ADAM HOFFMAN Presented annually to a junior or senior student who has demonstrated excellence in designing and analyzing his or her senior research project in chemistry. The award is sponsored by the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences. Livia Schutz WILLIAM C. AND MARY HELEN NEUMEISTER SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. ADAM HOFFMAN This scholarship honors the memory of William “Bill” Neumeister (C’38) and his wife, Mary Helen. Bill, with Mary Helen by his side, had a thriving veterinary practice, was an avid hobby farmer, and was proud of his family and their achievements. This scholarship is made possible by their family and friends. The recipient of this scholarship must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Katelyn Howe DR. CARL OSUCH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. ADAM HOFFMAN This scholarship honors Dr. Carl Osuch, professor emeritus of chemistry. Dr. Osuch served UD from 1964 until his retirement in 1990. It is the donor’s preference that the recipient of this scholarship demonstrates academic excellence in the area of chemistry as determined by the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences. DR. JOHN L. BENDER NURSING SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. NEIL MACNAUGHTON Provided in memory of Dr. John L. Bender, who as a physician provided voluntary service both to his profession and community, this scholarship recognizes the high regard Dr. Bender had for the nursing profession. The recipient of this award is a junior nursing student who holds a grade point average of 3.0 and has demonstrated service both to the nursing profession and to the community during his or her time as a student. Maria Gudenkauf DR. KATHY DOLTER N URSING SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. NEIL MACNAUGHTON This scholarship is awarded to a first-year nursing student who has a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The student must have demonstrated commitment to gaining experience in nursing care by work experience as a nursing assistant or licensed practical nurse prior to admission to UD’s nursing program. The student demonstrates care and compassion and exemplifies professionalism in both clinical and classroom environments. Chelsea Molzof 9
EUNICE KRUSE MACNAUGHTON NURSING SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. NEIL MACNAUGHTON This scholarship is awarded in memory of Eunice Kruse MacNaughton, mother of Dr. Neil MacNaughton, professor of nursing and assistant head of the Department of Nursing. Eunice attended the University of Dubuque in 1938, then she entered nursing school at the Marshalltown Evangelical Deaconess Hospital where she graduated in 1943. In 1976, Eunice returned to UD to earn a bachelor of science in nursing. Eunice worked as an RN in various areas, but her most enjoyable area of work was caring for children. Her last professional nursing position, greater than 20 years, was as a school nurse in the Marshalltown, Iowa, school district. The recipient of this award is a nursing student who holds a grade point average of 3.0 or above. Chelsea Michalski UD NURSING FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. NEIL MACNAUGHTON This scholarship is awarded to a first-year nursing student who has a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and exemplifies professionalism. The recipient is a role model to fellow students in both clinical and classroom environments and demonstrates the care and compassion of a nurse you would want caring for you or your loved ones. HOLLEY LYNN JAMES MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. NEIL MACNAUGHTON This scholarship is awarded in memory of Holley James, daughter of Jesse James, University of Dubuque emeritus dean of admission. Second Lieutenant Holley James, a 2007 graduate of the St. Ambrose nursing program, died at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, while serving as an Army nurse. The recipient must be a junior or senior in the nursing program, and it is preferred they are a member of the UD Army ROTC program. The recipient is chosen by the senior military advisor of the UD Eagle Company and the head of the nursing program. Megan Collister WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. NEIL MACNAUGHTON This scholarship was established by the Hearst Foundation to help support undergraduate students in the nursing program. Recipients must be full-time students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and be deemed by the nursing faculty to exhibit the leadership, skills, and compassion to be an excellent nurse. It is the preference of the foundation that recipients intend to permanently reside in the United States upon completion of their studies. UD STUDENT NURSING ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: MR. EN-YU WU The University of Dubuque Student Nursing Association (UDSNA) is dedicated to serving the community and reaching out to those in need. This scholarship is awarded to a student entering his or her senior year with a grade point average greater than 3.0 who is a candidate for office in the UDSNA. The recipient has experience in CNA work, shows caring and compassion in work, school, and community, and goes above and beyond in his or her participation in the nursing program and class. Elena Krasowski STANLEY E. SCHWARTZ COMMUNICATION SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: MS. SUE ANN MARINO This scholarship is provided as a tribute to honor Stan Schwartz’s career and volunteer service with the Peace Corps, American National Red Cross, Midwest Regional Red Cross, Red Cross chapters in California and Iowa, and the communities where he lived. The recipient of this scholarship is a communication major or minor who best demonstrates leadership potential and concern for others within both the University of Dubuque family and community at large. Brenna Seeser WESLEY ROEDER SPEECH PRIZE PRESENTER: MS. SUE ANN MARINO This prize is given annually to an outstanding student in the field of communication. DR. HAROLD A. FISHER SPEECH COMMUNICATION SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: MS. SUE ANN MARINO Dr. Harold A. Fisher graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1949. He continued his education by earning a master of divinity degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a PhD from Indiana University. The scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates academic excellence and commitment in the discipline of communication. Anna Brestrup WALLACE-MAGANA SCH OLARSHIP PRESENTER: REV. DR. JIM GUNN The Wallace-Magana Scholarship was established by Mr. L. Dean Wallace, of Vienna, Virginia, in accordance with the wishes of his late wife, Juanita Magana Wallace. The scholarship honors the memory of Lewis J. and Myrtle D. Wallace and Dr. Tobias and Wilhelmina R. Magana, the parents of Dean Wallace and Juanita Magana Wallace. Dean Wallace taught history and mathematics at the University of Dubuque from 1947 to 1951. Juanita was a graduate of the University of Dubuque and president of the Class of 1936. Four of Juanita’s sisters and two of her nephews also graduated from UD. This scholarship was established to express their gratitude for the opportunities the University of Dubuque opened to them and other members of Juanita’s family. WELLNESS AND EXERCIS E SCIENCE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE PRESENTER: DR. KEVIN CATTANI The recipient of this award is a senior wellness and exercise science major who has demonstrated commitment to the profession by promoting health and wellness through enthusiasm, positive attitude, and all-around performance in the major while maintaining high academic achievement. Mia Bruty HUMAN HEALTH SCIENCE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE PRESENTER: DR. KEVIN CATTANI The recipient of this award is a senior human health science major who has demonstrated commitment to the profession by promoting health and wellness through enthusiasm, positive attitude, and all-around performance in the major while maintaining high academic achievement. Isabel Cleary SPORT MARKETING AND MANAGEMENT AWARD OF EXCELLENCE PRESENTER: DR. KEVIN CATTANI The recipients of this award are senior sport marketing and management majors who have demonstrated commitment to the profession through meaningful, practical experience and excellent academic achievement, all while maintaining a positive and proactive demeanor. SPORT MARKETING AND MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT AWARD PRESENTER: DR. KEVIN CATTANI The recipient of this award is a rising student in the sport marketing and management program who is active in the field of study at both the campus and community level. The recipient demonstrates a zeal for lifelong learning in the field of sport marketing and management through evidence of involvement beyond what is expected of a college undergraduate. Adam Steingraeber MCKESSON INFORMATION SOLUTIONS SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: MS. ANN MAUSS Established in 1997 from proceeds of the McKesson Information Solutions Scholarship Classic, this award is given annually to outstanding students entering their final year of study for a degree in computer information systems. Nicholas Casarietti Vanessa Eniola COMPUTER STUDIES TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE AWARD PRESENTER: MS. ANN MAUSS The recipient of this award must demonstrate superior quality of knowledge and skill in broad areas of computer studies on a technical level, specifically database, networking, and languages. The recipient must further show a deep and continual effort towards the acquisition of new knowledge and skill. Dawson Tubbs 15
ROTHLISBERGER-TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: MS. ANN MA USS Established by Roderick D. Riggs (C’55) and Patricia Pav Riggs (C’55) to honor professors Hazel Rothlisberger and Dorothy Taylor, this scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding junior majoring in mathematics, physics, or computer studies with a high grade point average. Austin Butson MATHEMATICS EXCELLENCE AWARD PRESENTER: MS. ANN MA USS This award is given to a student who has shown perseverance and determination in learning higher mathematics. The recipient is selected by the mathematics faculty. The student must be a junior or senior who has earned at least a 3.5 grade point average in quantitative studies. Devon Gerber WILLIAM SHARPE EXCELLENCE IN ECONOMICS AWARD PRESENTER: DR. ERIC MUNSHOWER This award is presented to an outstanding economics major and is sponsored by the Department of Economics. Thomas Gibson (C’49) and his wife, Ms. Alice Bowen Gibson (C’50), in memory of their mothers, Mabel Gibson and Edna White. It is presented to an outstanding student majoring in English. Molly Schiltz GRACE BOEHNER ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. JESSICA SCHREYER An anonymous donor established this scholarship in memory of Dr. Grace Boehner. Dr. Boehner was an outstanding, longtime faculty member in the Department of English at the University of Dubuque. Katrina Owensby 18
RICHARD BISSELL CREATIVE WRITING AWARD PRESENTER: DR. JESSICA SCHREYER The Mathis-Pfohl Foundation honors the memory of Richard P. Bissell, a Dubuque native and well-known writer of the Broadway play The Pajama Game, by granting this award to the student who has written the best creative literary compositions. Emily Dzieginski LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE AWAR D FOR EXCELLENCE IN ENGLISH STUDIES PRESENTER: DR. JESSICA SCHREYER This award honors a student who has been nominated by the Department of Language and Literature based on his or her demonstration of exceptional hard work and promise in their English studies. Nafaria McMillian LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SPANISH STUDIES PRESENTER: DR. JESSICA SCHREYER This award honors students who have been nominated by the Department of Language and Literature based on their demonstration of exceptional hard work and promise in their Spanish studies. DR. PHILLIP DELONG INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE LEADERSHIP AWARD PRESENTER: MS. KRISTEN EBY This award recognizes a member of the instrumental ensemble who has demonstrated a commitment to the progress of the group, demonstrated artistic integrity and excellence, helped shape the direction of the ensemble, and worked to develop membership within the group. Zachary Norman WALTER F. PETERSON SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHORAL MUSIC AND ART PRESENTER: MS. KRISTEN EBY This scholarship was established in memory of Walter F. Peterson (DHL’97), former University of Dubuque president and chancellor who had a passion for the arts on the UD campus and the greater community. The recipient of this scholarship is a member of the UD Concert Choir who demonstrates leadership ability and a commitment to the arts at UD. Austin Butson DR. THOMAS AND VIRGINIA SOMERVILLE CONCERT CHOIR LEADERSHIP AWARD PRESENTER: MS. KRISTEN EBY This award recognizes a member of the UD Concert Choir who has demonstrated a commitment to the progress of the choir, demonstrated artistic integrity and excellence, helped shape the direction of the ensemble, and worked to develop membership within the choir. GORDON ELMORE AND BETH LAURINE MILLER ENDOWED PRIZE PRESENTER: MS. KRISTEN EBY Gordon E. Miller (C’52) had a passion for music. He was an active member of choir in high school, at UD, and with both church and secular choirs until his passing in 2012. Established by his family and friends, this award is given to a fine and performing arts major who is in good academic standing, is a member of the UD Concert Choir, and has financial needs. Sav Jennings AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE DRAMATIC ARTS PRESENTER: MS. KRISTEN EBY This award recognizes a member of the theatre program who has demonstrated exceptional initiative, zeal, and excellence for his or her art, work, and career in dramatic arts. Matt Tompkins SOCIOLOGY/CRIMINAL JUSTICE AWARD PRESENTER: MS. KIM HILBY This award, given by the faculty of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, recognizes outstanding leadership and excellence in the study of sociology and criminal justice. PRE-LAW AWARD OF EXCELLENCE PRESENTER: MS. KIM HILBY This award recognizes a graduating senior who plans on continuing his or her studies in law school. The recipient must demonstrate excellence in advocacy, commitment to the Pre-Law Program, and passion for justice. Carolena Lund LEONARD AND GENEVIEVE GIBBS AND JANE (GIBBS) NEVE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. CHAD BIERMEIER The Leonard and Genevieve Gibbs and Jane (Gibbs) Neve Scholarship was established in 1980 by Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs’ two daughters, Jane Gibbs Neve (C’63) and Victoria Gibbs Schnittjer (C’67). Mr. Gibbs was a teacher in Hopkinton, Iowa, schools for over 40 years. James Boeckenstedt O’HARE OUTSTANDING STUDENT TEACHER AWARD PRESENTER: DR. CHAD BIERMEIER This award, established by Marv and Cathy O’Hare, is given annually to a student teacher who shows great potential to be an outstanding teacher. Dr. Marv O’Hare is an alumnus of the Class of 1955 and served as superintendent of schools for the Dubuque Community School District. Members of the education faculty select the recipient. MARILYN BUNTING EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. CHAD BIERMEIER This award was established by Clifford Bunting (C’57), Dean (C’80) and Cynthia Bunting, Daniel (C’83) and Lisa Bunting, William (C’71) and Donna Neill, and Thomas (C’72) and Karla (C’74) Willoughby in memory of Clifford’s spouse, Marilyn Bunting (C’71). Marilyn was an elementary education teacher in Martelle, Iowa, and a special education teacher for over 25 years at West Delaware. Following her retirement from public school teaching, she served as a faculty member in the Department of Teacher Education at UD. Throughout her entire teaching career, she was known as a mentor to students and fellow teachers. This award is given to junior students in the Department of Teacher Education who focus on special education and are Iowa residents with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Emily Bloomer Nafaria McMillian KUEHNLE TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: DR. CHAD BIERMEIER This award was established from the estate of Ethel B. Kuehnle (C’37). Adisen Moorman LUCAS ANTHONY KALB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: MR. DAN RUNKLE Luke “Big Righty” Kalb (MBA’16) loved the University of Dubuque, and he was proud to be called “Coach.” An assistant baseball coach, he was respected and loved by his players as well as the entire University of Dubuque community. Established to honor him by his family, this scholarship is presented to a student who embodies the characteristics that made Luke the person he was: perseverance, hard work, and a positive attitude. Luke passed away after a valiant battle with cancer, but he knew this scholarship would be a part of his lasting legacy at UD. Jory Sturdevant SENIOR ACADEMIC ATHLETIC AWARD PRESENTER: MR. MARGE KREMER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: MR. MICHAEL DURNIN The Marge Kremer Memorial Scholarship, established by the University of Dubuque Alumni Association, is given to a student who demonstrates the same standard of dedication to church, school, and community displayed by Marge Kremer. For 40 years, Marge served as the manager of the food service department as well as an advisor to several campus fraternities. She shared her love of life and devotion to UD with students, faculty, and staff every day. Kira Finifrock MAJOR GENERAL FRANCIS J. KELLY SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTER: CAPTAIN ANDREW FESKE The Major General Francis J. Kelly Scholarship was established in his memory by his wife, Charlotte G. Kelly, and his daughter, Barbara Smeltzer (C’66). It is awarded annually to an Army ROTC member who is in the upper one-third of his or her class, shows great ability toward outstanding leadership, is of good character, and is currently of sophomore or junior status.
