1 Rabbi Shlomo Krasner May - June 2022 30 Nisan - 1 Tamuz 5782 For my dear Schomre Israel Family and Friends, Spring is finally here. It has been a long winter, both literally and figuratively, and as the flowers bloom and the robins flitter, a sweet warmth infuses the air. We are reminded that fol- lowing even the harshest of winters is spring’s renewal and natural ability to blossom and grow once more. This winter has been very hard for the Schomre Israel and the Manor communities. We needed to say goodbye to a few of our longtime friends. Righteous men and women, who had dedicated their lives for goodness and friendship, filling up their surrounding with that warmful embrace which we looked forward to in their company. They were people of G-d, infused with Torah and Mitzvos, a wealth of Jewish pride and tradi- tions. We are now bereft of their wisdom and wit, their smile and calm, their care and their friendship. There is an old adage - when looking at a monument one sees two dates with a dash in between. And while everyone focuses on the first date, the date of coming into this world, and on the second date, when they went to FRIDAY MINCHA TIMES their eternal reward, what is more important than those dates is the dash in between – what they did with the years that they were here. For our time here is only an “Entrance to the Banquet Hall”, we have so much to give and better the world. And while we mourn the passing of our friends, we celebrate their lives and the way that they made the world a better place. We celebrate the meaningful advice that they always shared with us, and we celebrate their rock-solid faith throughout all of their tribulations. We celebrate their creativity, affection, and goodwill, we celebrate their friendship, kindness, and love. We celebrate their lives and how they decided to fill them – we celebrate the dash in between. “The dash serves as an emblem of our time here on the earth, and although small, it stands for all our years of life and worth. And our worth will be determined by how we live each day; we can fill our dash with goodness, or waste our life away. To ourselves, as well as others, let’s be honest, kind and true, and live our lives in the way we know G-d wants us to. Let’s look for opportunities, to do a worthy deed, showing love and understand- ing to those who are in need. For if our hearts are full of love throughout our journey here, we’ll be loved by all who knew us and our memory they’ll hold dear. For that dash represents all the time spent alive on earth, and now only those who loved them, know what that little line is worth. If we could just slow down enough to con- sider what's true and real, and always try to understand the way other people feel. And be less quick to anger, Message From the Rabbi continues on page 2
2 Message from the Rabbi continued from page 1 and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before. Let us treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile. And when we die, those memories, will bring grateful loving tears to all whose lives were touched by the dash between our years.” 1 The classic paradigmatic contrast of one who lived life to its fullest and one who threw it all away can be found in the beautiful story of Rus that we read during the Shavuos holiday. Naomi, whose husband had moved to the fields of Moav due to famine, became the mother-in-law to two royal Moavi young women, Rus and Orpah. When they all became widowed and impoverished, Naomi started to return back to her home in Beis Lechem. She looked at her young daughters-in-law and implored them to return home to their lives. Orpah was torn between a loving fidelity to Naomi and her original unburdened royal life, and after prodding, tearfully returned home to her Moavi roots. Rus, however, understood the beauty of the Torah, and saw how it shone from Naomi, and desired to embrace her fully. She understood that her mother-in-law needed love and kindness at that moment, and saw the growth and importance of the path that Torah leads one to follow. “Do not entreat me to leave you and return back from you, for your nation is my nation and your G-d is my G-d”. Orpah went back to her life of freedom, and faded into obscurity, while Rus followed the beauty of all that is good, becoming the paragon of the beauty of kindness and Torah. Rus is credited with being one of the main influences of her great-grandson David, and the Mother of Royalty for all time.2 So as I watch the flowers blooming and the young shoots breaking free from the harsh soil, I will think of my friends to whom I have said goodbye. Yet instead of mourning, I will celebrate their lives. The people they have come to be, their Jewish pride, kindness, mitzvos and closeness to Hashem, their friendships, the lives that they lived and the dash that they filled with goodness and warmth. For the Heavens, the Heavens belong to Hashem, and the Earth He gave to man. I celebrate those who were given a place here on Earth, and transformed it, and themselves, into the Heavens.
