THEY AREN’T LITTLE FOR A LIFETIME. But while they are, our early education programs at Westminster prepare them for the future. Little ones are growing intellectually, physically, emotionally, and spiritually; so the care your children receive when they are young is vital to their later success. At Westminster, our small class sizes, gifted teachers, and emphasis on exploration uniquely address all of the areas required for your young learner to grow into a learner for a lifetime. Who’s Who Susan Brindley (Grand Duchess Olga Katrina) Following her stint playing Jacqueline, who works in a restaurant and has a thick foreign accent, in La Cage aux Folles at Theatre Memphis, Susan is thrilled to be playing someone who works in a restaurant with a thick foreign accent in You Can’t Take It With You! Sure, Olga doesn’t own the restaurant, but at least she used to be royalty, right? And she is glad to be working with her husband, Brian Helm, again, and enjoying his antics with another stage wife! “Thanks to all the cast and crew and the fabulous Ann Marie Hall for taking us on this wonderful ride!” Susan is a voice coach and teacher – check her out at www.susanbrindley.com Mary Buchignani (Penny Sycamore) is enjoying her 3rd iteration of this show, having played Mrs. Kirby and Essie previously at TM, especially since her real-life husband is also her stage husband. Favorite roles include Maggie Jones (42nd Street), Mrs. Henry Dashwood (Sense & Sensibility), Margrethe Bohr (Copenhagen), Martha (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf), Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing), Gwendolyn (The Importance of Being Earnest), Abigail Adams (1776), Jeannie (Good People), and as an Ensemble member of The Laramie Project (Ostrander Award/ Best Supporting Actress). Mary thanks John and her sweet pups, Bella and Beau, for keeping her semi-sane. Chris Cotten (Henderson IRS Man/Mac) has been acting, directing, and designing in Memphis area theatres for over 35 years. At Theatre Memphis, he was most recently seen as Charles in The Clean House. Other recent roles include the Bank Manager in Once and Rev. Peters in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, both at Playhouse on the Square, and Boo Radley/Horace Gilmer in To Kill a Mockingbird with Tennessee Shakespeare Company. “Love, as always, to Lorraine, Katy, and James.” Lauren Gunn (Essie Carmichael) is delighted to participate in her first Theatre Memphis production. Regional credits include: Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet (Tennessee Shakespeare Company), Boeing Boeing, I Hate Hamlet (Southern Arena Theatre), Crimes of the Heart, Constellations, Gruesome Playground Injuries (New Stage Theatre), Voices of Freedom Summer (Fishtale Group Theatre). Ann Marie Hall (Director) Since the end of August, this is Ann Marie’s 4th show. She was in Lifespan of a Fact at Circuit Playhouse as we were just peaking our heads out of Covid with limited seating in the theatres and where a full house still looked mighty small. She then began directing Urinetown, The Musical at Theatre Memphis, a beautiful musical about a necessary, while distasteful, topic, and we still had to work around Covid. Recently, she appeared as Ma Beckoff in Torch Song at Circuit Playhouse, a role she will cherish, directed by her friendly foe, Dave Landis…and still Covid lingered on. Now, as the future looks bright, Theatre Memphis opens up the story of the lovely Sycamore family. Ms. Hall feels fortunate that after 23 years, on March 31st, she could retire from the University of Memphis and have more time to pursue her “other life” full time. She will be directing The Play That Goes Wrong here at Theatre Memphis this time next year and recently was granted the directory helm to Evil Dead, The Musical opening in October at TheatreWorks in Overton Square with New Moon Theatre Company. “Life is good. Enjoy every minute.” Austin Hasenmueller (Alice Sycamore) is so excited to return to the Lohrey Stage! She was a part of the Ensemble in Cinderella, directed by Ann Marie Hall, back in 2005. Austin would like to dedicate this performance to her late grandmother, Sarah L-C Flowers, who raised her to appreciate the arts and have a deep love for Theatre Memphis. Austin is thankful for the opportunities The Lord gives her, and is grateful for the support of her family and friends. 9
Who’s Who Brian Helm (Mr. Kirby) Finishing his “conservative husband and father with a child that wants to get married” trilogy that began with Doc Gibbs in Our Town and then Edouard Dindon in La Cage aux Folles, Brian is happy to end now with Anthony Kirby. Next, Brian will be seeking out roles where the character is liberal, childless, and a bachelor. John M. Hemphill (Paul Sycamore), a native Memphian, is thrilled to be returning to the Theatre Memphis stage having last been seen in Hairspray. Favorite local roles include Thurston et al in A Tuna Christmas; Fester in The Addams Family; Nicely-Nicely in Guys and Dolls (Ostrander Award); John Adams in 1776; Johnny in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair De Lune; Man 2 in Kiss Me Kate (Ostrander Award); and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, in which he was privileged to play opposite his beautiful and multi-talented wife and love of his life, Mary Buchignani. “Much love to Beau and Bella.” Donita Johnson (Rheba) is extremely proud to be part of this production. As the winner of the 2020 Best Leading Actress in a Drama Ostrander Award, she is excited to dive into this amazing comedy. She would like to thank her two beautiful children, family, friends, cast mates, and production team for all of their support! Kim Justis (Gay Wellington) is flying high to be working with this sparkling cast and crew. “What a shot to carouse with such a lush bunch of stiffs.” She was most recently getting soaked with creativity in Cicada at Theatre Memphis. The Ostrander Award winner has been and continues to tipple her way across stages all over the city. Franklin Koch (Ed Carmichael) is thrilled to be making his live xylophone debut! He was last seen in Shockheaded Peter with New Moon Theatre Company and as Simon Stimson in Our Town here at Theatre Memphis. Franklin currently works as a tutor and will be starting an MA degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Memphis in the fall. If you ask nicely, he WILL show you pictures of his two charming and attractive cats. “Thanks for being part of ‘a little gaiety around here!’” Max McClung (Assistant Stage Manager) has most recently worked flyrail for La Cage aux Folles and Our Town at Theatre Memphis. His most recent Assistant Stage Manager job was for Urinetown, The Musical also at Theatre Memphis. He has volunteered at Theatre Memphis for three years and plans to continue working here until they kick him out. Katie Ogden (Stage Manager) is absolutely thrilled to be back with AMH and stage managing this crazy cast and crew for You Can’t Take It With You. She previously stage managed Urinetown, The Musical this season and will be an Assistant Stage Manager for Ragtime. She is incredibly grateful to Max for continuing this journey with her as her go-to ASM and being her right hand in every situation this season. Thank you to Ashley for always giving her the opportunity to be a Stage Manager for this wonderful theatre and community. Austin Michael Russell (Tony Kirby) is an Actor, Writer, and Director — as well as an alum of the University of Memphis Department of Theatre and Dance. He has performed professionally all around the eastern United States, growing as a storyteller, combatant, and all around dude. Thanks to this ensemble, his family, and his partner for constantly helping him seek personal happiness. aus10russll.wixsite.com/austin Carol Russell (Mrs. Kirby) is thrilled to be back on the Theatre Memphis stage working with the incomparable Ann Marie Hall and this fabulous cast! In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Carol was the recipient of three Ostrander Best Supporting Actress nominations and two Ostrander Best Supporting 10
Who’s Who Actress Awards. She thanks her prince of a husband, Wayne, for all of his support. Chris Sterling (Martin Vanderhof) is beyond delighted to be appearing in this crazy production with this amazing cast. His last appearance at Theatre Memphis was as Dr. Kraven in The Secret Garden on the Next Stage. Some of his other TM productions include Newsies, The Royal Family, and Fallen Angels. Chris has also appeared in shows at POTS, GCT, and Harrell. As Principal Scenic Designer for New Moon Theatre Company, Chris has spent the last 10 years designing and building more shows than he has appeared in. His set design for Haint won him the coveted Ostrander. His most recent designs include Shockheaded Peter and Art. He has also designed sets for POTS. Chris would like to thank his daughter of another playwright, Ann Marie, for this extraordinary opportunity. “Life is pretty simple if you just relax.” Claiborne Thomas Jr. (Donald) Being both a performer and a teacher in the theater industry, Claiborne Thomas Jr. is excited to do his fourth show on the Theatre Memphis stage. After performing in Los Angeles for 8 years, Claiborne has recently moved back to Memphis to be closer to his family. Being an adventurous spirit, Claiborne has performed and trained on various stages on the West Coast and Midwest. A few of his notable roles are: Lenny in Neil Simon’s Rumors, Tom Collins in Jonathan Larson’s Rent, and as one of the Buffalo Bills Quartet members in The Music Man. Claiborne is very excited to continue his theatrical career here at Theatre Memphis and is looking forward to sharing the stage with this incredible cast. Christopher Tracy (Boris Kolenkhov) is excited to return to the TM stage to perform in the show that made him want to do theatre. This show introduced him to the world of entertaining others and he hopes someone watching is equally inspired tonight. “Enjoy the show.” Ben Watts (J-Man) is excited to be part of a live theatre production again after many years away. “Thank you to everyone involved at Theatre Memphis for this wonderful opportunity!” Allison White (Costume, Wig, Hair and Make Up Designer) is a Costume Designer currently based in Memphis. She is originally from Wake Forest, North Carolina and moved to Memphis in April of 2020. She has a BFA in Costume Design and Technology from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MFA in Theatre from The University of Florida. She has worked at several regional opera companies as part of the costume production staff and designed at regional theatre companies and universities. This is her first show with Theatre Memphis. Some of her design credits include Ada and the Engine (Tennessee Shakespeare Company); Pippin, Between Riverside and Crazy, The Day is Long to End (University of Florida); Caroline, Or Change (Cape Fear Regional Theatre); The Secret World of Og (Sarasota Opera Youth Program); Smokey Joe’s Café, The Wolf, All My Sons, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Carousel (Theatre Raleigh); American Idiot, The Music Man, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Piano Lesson, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Importance of Being Earnest (William Peace University). Mark Winburne (Mr. De Pinna) excitedly returns to the Lohrey Theatre at Theatre Memphis. Most recently, Mark appeared in A Christmas Carol as Bob Cratchit, a role he has performed for the last 3 years. He has also appeared as Melvin Matthews in Sisterly Feelings, as well as Peter Whetworth in The Common Pursuit on the Next Stage. He is set to return in next season’s production of Sherlock’s Last Case as Inspector LeStrade. He dedicates this performance to his wife Peggy, whose love, support, and encouragement, makes it all possible. Thank you to West Memphis Animal Shelter!
