Welcome to an entirely new type of school year! Please know we understand what a challenge this year will present as we navigate virtual learning models, 7th graders adjust to a new building and higher expectations, manage anxieties about health and safety while in school, etc. Our team of teachers is committed to trying our best, staying flexible, and learning as much as we can together! We can do this! We believe that one of the keys to success in school is a committed partnership of family, teachers, and students. We know that many concerns may arise during this eventful year. We are also aware that changing family relationships and situations can have a strong impact on students and their motivation to succeed. Please make us aware of any such situations that may affect you and your child’s attitude toward school. In turn, we will contact parents with any concerns we have regarding your child. Please read this handbook as a seventh-grade student and a parent/guardian so that everyone knows what to expect from the Lions Team and what we ask of you. We are looking forward to an exciting, productive year with every member as part of the team! Lions Team School Supplies Students will need the following for all LIONS TEAM classes: • Bring your school issued laptop (fully charged), stylus, and charger to school daily. • One large three ring binder with space for five three-hole punched folders. One folder for each team class (Health, Science, History, English, Math – feel free to keep any ENCORE class folders in this binder too). • One zippered pouch/pencil case/container (your choice) with the following to take to team classes: o several #2 pencils (standard or mechanical) o one TI-30XIIS calculator o one package of colored pencils o a few different colored dry erase markers o headphones you can easily use with your school laptop (We do not recommend blue tooth devices due to connectivity issues and the high price. Dollar Store earbuds work fine.) • A novel/magazine for reading when extra time remains after a test or assignment. You will have to replace this throughout the year as you finish books, so become a friend of our school library, your public library, or the bookstore! • Donations of hand sanitizer, tissues, and disinfecting wipes to your homeroom teacher would also be greatly appreciated at any time during the year if you happen to see them in the stores again! Please note that this is a list of TEAM supplies only. ENCORE teachers may require additional, separate supplies as students rotate through their classes during the school year. We also ask for your patience and assistance as requests may arise throughout the year for materials. We promise to do our best to provide students ample time to acquire needed supplies or provide them when we can. Thank you!
Lions Team Philosophy The core of the Lions’ Team philosophy is students’ personal responsibility. Just as we enthusiastically embrace our responsibilities as your child’s teachers, we ask each student to take personal responsibility for his/her work ethic, behavior, attitude, and commitment. We believe that a critical step toward becoming a productive adult is the ability to accept responsibility as well as any consequences that may result from not accepting that responsibility. Accountability is a very important word on the Lions’ Team. Related to personal responsibility, the Lions Team will also be working to help our students become learners that are more independent. In this way, students gain confidence in their ability to learn and discover without an adult always “leading them by the hand.” Student Laptops Students should bring fully charged laptops to school daily. Work together to develop a plan for charging computers nightly as charging space is very limited in our classrooms. We will use student laptops daily this year. At no time are students permitted to play games on their laptops during “free time”. Since the school provides students with these powerful devices, phones will not to be used in our classrooms. Microsoft TEAMS and Virtual Learning Microsoft TEAMS is an extremely powerful app and useful tool for students! This is what all teachers will be using this year as a starting point for virtual learning. Teachers will share more soon about the individual components of Microsoft TEAMS they will use most in their classrooms, such as OneNote, Virtual Meetings, etc. Please be patient with any tech difficulty this year as we are all learning together. Students should use their school provided emails via Outlook to contact teachers or other student regarding school.
SV Portal The SV Portal is the other key to many important student and parent resources. The link for the SV Portal (https://portal.svsd.net/) can be found on both the district and RGMS home page. First, student grades can be viewed on SV Portal. Report cards and progress reports are no longer mailed home unless parents request it! Please check Portal for these important items. We recommend checking Portal weekly to catch any concerns early. Please keep in mind that a zero indicates an earned grade or missing assignment. No score indicates the assignment has not been graded yet. Teachers will make their best effort to grade items in a timely manner and leave comments on Portal when needed. Also, please be sure to keep your most current contact information on Portal so teachers can send group and personal emails easily. Issues with login should be directed to the district secretary at 724.452.6040 x0. Second, SV Portal also allows login access to our individual teacher classroom announcements, websites, online textbooks, contact information, and more. Please explore and use these resources often. The Lions Team Website Our Lions Team website is separate from our teacher websites and provides general information about the team. You can access the Lions Team page by going to www.svsd.net and selecting the “7/8 Middle School” from the top drop-down box. From there, use the link to the Lions Team under “Teams”. Absences Students will be responsible for making up homework or other class work missed due to absence. Students are expected to take the initiative to check Microsoft TEAMs/teacher websites for each teacher on their own. Please note that students who are present in school and miss one or more of our classes due to field trips, other school- related activities (i.e. band lessons, chorus/band rehearsal, Purpose, etc.), tardiness, or snow delays must still turn in assigned work on time. Before school or during homeroom would be an appropriate time to TURN IN work to team teachers! Extended vacation absences must be approved through the front office before teachers may provide work ahead of time.
In Class Expectations The Lions’ Team expects appropriate classroom behavior and attitude at all times! Our goal is a classroom atmosphere that is relaxed yet conducive to learning. Accordingly, we expect the following from students: 1. Arrive to class on time. Lates should be minimal due to the proximity of team classrooms. 2. Be seated QUIETLY before the late bell rings with all needed materials (this includes having used the restroom or water fountain if needed). 3. RESPECT OTHERS! In our classrooms, we judge others by their actions and treatment of others and NOTHING else. In addition, students should show respect for others, including their teachers, by refraining from talking while others are talking and by handling school materials and others’ belongings carefully. 4. Laptops are to be used for EDUCATIONAL purposes only and charged fully every night! Phones should be OFF and INSIDE backpacks throughout the day. There is no such thing as “free time” at RGMS. You should never use technology in class without teacher permission. 5. Behave appropriately, listen attentively, and exercise self-control (this includes no “toys” in school). 6. NO CHEATING in any form is permitted! Cheating results in an automatic zero. Our definition of cheating includes any situation in which you are not completely responsible for your own work. Such situations comprise, but are not limited to, copying from someone else’s test, quiz, or work during class; “borrowing” someone else’s homework to copy; asking students from an earlier class what questions were on a quiz or test; allowing a parent/guardian to complete your assignment for you. 7. The bell at the end of the period DOES NOT dismiss you from classes; WE DO! When the bell rings, all students will remain in their seats until teachers indicate they are dismissed. Any student who does not follow this directive will remain behind until all students have left the room. 8. WE ARE A HEALTHY, SAFE SCHOOL AND TEAM! Please wear your mask at all times, covering your nose and mouth in an effort to keep us all safe. Be aware of your body and keep social distance when possible. Due to the large number of food, airborne, and contact related allergies in our school and on our team, there is also no eating in classrooms. (We will discuss school approved snack times and items the first week of school.) SEE THROUGH water bottles (no beverages aside from water inside) are permitted at teacher discretion. Please consider stepping outside the classroom to blow your nose or take a drink to maintain safety this year. *All school-wide rules and procedures found in the RGMS Student Handbook apply to the team and our classrooms though they may not be listed here.
Virtual Learning Tips and Expectations 1. Get ready for your school day at home like a “real” school day. Get dressed and find a comfy/quiet space to learn; but it should not be your bed. 2. Join virtual class on time and/or follow a normal school day as you complete class work. Check the Lions Team website for a bell schedule to use at home. 3. Start each virtual day by logging in to Portal to check class announcements, then open the Microsoft TEAMS app to get started. 4. Enter and remain in virtual class with your camera ON and mic MUTED. We will instruct you when to change the status of both. Use the “raise your hand” button to ask a question. Save the “chat” for only really important questions that need addressed immediately. 5. Make sure your learning space is free of distracting items like your phone and give your full attention and focus so you can complete the learning that is needed. 6. Save eating and drinking for break times and not during a virtual meeting. 7. Stay organized using the tools on your computer. The calendar in Microsoft TEAMS links to your calendar in Outlook (email). Consider how you keep your desktop, pin apps to the taskbar, organize files/folders/OneNote, etc. See us if you need help! 8. Turn in work on time and with full effort. We understand there will be challenges this year, but the best way to avoid problems is to plan ahead and stay on track. 9. Use your school email or TEAMS messaging with proper formatting to contact us. Always make sure to sign your full first and last name with period number. 10. Be respectful of everyone’s situation and ideas and stay flexible. This is new for all of us! Remember this is a school setting and all behavior and language must follow school policy. If students do not live up to virtual/in class expectations: • First Time: Verbal warning/Student conference • Second Time: Timeout (Alternative Learning Center “ALC”) • Third Time: Timeout/Detention AND Parent contact/conference • Fourth Time: Office/guidance referral **Severe Disruptions: Immediate removal/notification to the office or timeout. Students who follow classroom expectations will be rewarded with: • verbal praise and recognition; Student of the Month Recognition; participation in team activities and celebrations; good news postcards, emails, or phone calls home; personal satisfaction in a job well done!
