Press Release, February 2021 (Page 1 of 6) Line Lyhne / Spaces and Species February 26th till May 2nd, 2021 In her first institutional solo exhibition, Line Lyhne reflects on art history and often gender-specific assignments and classifications of artistic genres, materials, objects, and spaces. Her mosaics made from common household tiles and sculptural objects, open new, unusual perspectives that withstand a clear localization. In her work, Line Lyhne presents various materials and methods, from manual precision work to the use of industrially manufactured ready-mades, which deliberately span across various art-historical references. Already formally, they thus resist a clear classification. Unbiased and timelessly, the artist juxtaposes visual and applied art and dissolves the hierarchy between art object and handicraft, functional furniture or decorative home furnishings - and not least the spaces in which they are produced, used and presented. The sculptural marble and forged iron objects have a familiar presence, moving associatively between modernist stone sculptures and domestic decoration. The sculptures deliberately reveal their production process, such as the unsmoothed imprint of the chisel in the stone as a transferable trace of the artist's hand and body in the work. At first, the iridescent mosaics look like an arbitrary combination of glass and ceramic tiles from the hardware store - but with increasing distance, the composition and color selection create the impression of a shimmering landscape or a private interior. The extreme landscape formats, which formally refer to the genre of landscape painting, enter into a dialogue with vertical format works that open up abstract (interior) spaces. Combining traditional, antique mosaic technique with the use of globally mass-produced, modern decorative tiles, Line Lyhne creates pixelated images of a reflective high-rise facade or an intimate zoom-in to private domestic rooms - supposedly familiar places in a displaced and alienated perspective. In doing so, she draws attention to the expanded view in our digital world, in which images made of pixels can be infinitely altered, distorted, and alienated and video conferencing allows unfamiliar details of private interiors. With the exhibition title Spaces and Species, Line Lyhne refers to George Perec's collection of essays Species of Spaces and Other Pieces (1973) and aims at a possible expansion of (spatial) perspectives, locations, categorizations and designations. She specifically deals with the premises of the Nassauischer Kunstverein, which is located as a contemporary exhibition house in an old town villa from the 19th century and allows historical Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden Tel 0611 30 11 36 Wilhelmstraße 15 presse@kunstverein-wiesbaden.de 65185 Wiesbaden www.kunstverein-wiesbaden.de
