Looking Back at 2020 PBOT issued 1184 Healthy Businesses Permits and 181 pickup/drop-off zones, free of charge. Additionally, PBOT : • Provided over $40,000 in free traffic control devices to Black, Indigenous, and Person of Color (BIPOC) owned businesses. • Delivered 20 free outdoor dining plaza kits (valued at $2,000 each) to BIPOC businesses. • Distributed $10,000 worth of free 5-minute pickup/drop-off signs. • Given $1,100 of free and discounted paint supplies for street painting projects at Healthy Businesses installations. As Portland looks toward the Summer of 2021, PBOT wants to support its Healthy Businesses permit program to make existing and new street plazas and seating areas even more welcoming and inclusive of public and community activity across the city. Takeaways from Dream Street Plaza • Beyond permitting: people, relationships & partnerships are central to activation. • Resources can be a catalyst, but ongoing maintenance & stewardship is essential. • Smaller streets with active frontages make great plaza environments. • Streets are flexible, dynamic public spaces that can support a wide range of uses and purposes.
