Darwin Day: 12 February 12 February is celebrated every year as Darwin Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the father of evolutionary biology, Charles Darwin in 1809. This day highlights Darwin's contribution to evolutionary and plant science. In 2015, Darwin's ‘Origin of Species’ was voted the most influential academic book in history. The theory of evolution by natural selection was first formulated in Darwin's book “On the Origin of Species” in 1859. It is explained that organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioural traits. These changes will allow an organism to adapt better in the environment and help to survive and to have better offspring. Pakistan Navy organising Exercise Aman off the coast of Karachi Pakistan Navy is organising Exercise Aman off the coast of Karachi from February 11 to 16, 2021. A total of 46 countries including US, China, Russia, UK, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia are participating. The collaborative drills are being held since 2007 when it started with three participants.
The exercise seeks to develop and practice Response Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (RTTP) for maritime infrastructure, assets and forces against traditional and non-traditional threats. President Ram Nath Kovind opens annual Udyanotsav of Rashtrapati Bhavan President Ram Nath Kovind opened the annual Udyanotsav of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Apart from the annual opening of Mughal Gardens, people can visit Rashtrapati Bhavan and Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum as well as witness the Change of Guard Ceremony. Mughal Garden is also known as 'the first garden of the Republic' and was designed by Sir Edward Lutyens. The mughal gardens of Delhi depict the era and culture of the mughal reign for decades. Sir Edward Lutyens assimilated British prowess with the Islamic heritage while designing the majestic garden. 11 projects of Rs. 2560 lakhs have been sanctioned under National Beekeeping & Honey Mission Recently the government has approved the allocation for Rs. 500 crore for National Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM) for three years (2020-21 to 2022-23).
The mission was announced as part of the AtmaNirbhar Bharat scheme. NBHM aims for the overall promotion & development of scientific beekeeping in the country to achieve the goal of ‘Sweet Revolution’ which is being implemented through the National Bee Board (NBB). The main objective of NBHM is to promote holistic growth of the beekeeping industry for income & employment generation. Maharashtra govt signs MoU with Flipkart to promote wooden toys, local artifacts, handicrafts In order to promote wooden toys, local artifacts, handicrafts Maharashtra Small Industries Development Corporation and Maharashtra State Khadi & Village Industries Board have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Flipkart. This MoU will enable artisans, weavers, craftsmen & MSMEs from Maharashtra to showcase their products to millions of customers in India. Flipkart will provide free training for packaging and branding to all these manufacturers. Also, product photography will also be done by the company. Shanghai-based NDB to invest USD 100 million in NIIF FoF National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) said that Shanghai-based New Development Bank has committed to invest USD 100 million (around Rs 728 crore) in NIIF Fund of Funds (FoF). NDB joins the Government of India (GoI), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) as an investor in the FoF.
National Investment and Infrastructure Fund is India’s first infrastructure specific investment fund or a sovereign wealth fund that was set up by the Government of India in February 2015. NIIF CEO: Sujoy Bose RBI Organises Financial Literacy Week from February 8-12, 2021 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched the Financial Literacy Week (FLW) from February 8-12, 2021, to propagate financial education. RBI conducts Financial Literacy Week (FLW) every year since 2016 to propagate financial education messages on a particular theme every year across the country, through a focused campaign. The theme for 2021 FLW is ‘Credit Discipline and Credit from Formal Institutions’. Asian Games gold medallist athlete Hima Das appointed DSP in Assam Athlete Hima Das has been appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police by the Assam government. Nicknamed ‘Dhing Express’, Hima Das is a 20-year-old Indian sprinter from Assam. She became the first Indian woman indeed the first ever Indian athlete to win a gold medal in any format of a global track event at IAAF World U20 Championships when she clocked a speed of 51.46 seconds.
She won a silver in women’s 400m in the 2018 Asian Games, was also part of the gold-winning women’s 400m relay and mixed 400m relay quartets in the quadrennial event in Jakarta. Manasa Varanasi of Telangana crowned VLCC Femina Miss India World 2020 Manasa Varanasi from Telangana has been crowned Miss India 2020. The 23-year-old was crowned by Miss India 2019 Suman Ratan Singh Rao from Rajasthan. She will now represent India at the 70th Miss World pageant in December 2021. Born in Hyderabad, Manasa Varanasi is an engineer by profession and works as a financial information exchange analyst. Tamil Movie “Koozhangal” Wins Tiger Award at Rotterdam International Film Festival 2021 The Tamil film “Koozhangal” has won “Tiger” award, at the 50th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2021. The Tiger award is the top honour of the festival, given for best film. Koozhangal (meaning Pebbles) has been Produced by Nayanthara and directed by Vinod Raj PS. This is the second Indian film to win this international award and the first Tamil Film. The first Indian film was “Durga” directed by the Malayalam director Shashidharan. The Tiger Award, worth Euro 40,000 cash prize, is shared between the director and producer of the winning film.
