Lightning Ridge 6 Day Tour DAY 2: Monday 15 March Dubbo to Lightning Ridge We start our day with a visit to the world-renowned Western Plains Zoo. Offering clear views of over 800 animals from around the world in settings closely resembling their natural habitats, a zoo guide will join the coach to show us the main attractions. After an early lunch at the Zoo we head north and drive to Lightning Ridge, which is a rich opal field famous as the only source of black opal in the world. With its stark and scarred landscape this town has a peculiar fascination for visitors. Opals can be purchased direct from the miners while the novice fossicker can occasionally stumble across a choice stone among the heaps of mullock known locally as ‘shincracker’. On arrival we settle into our accommodation for the next 3 nights. Next, we experience the atmosphere of an underground mine at Opal Mine Adventure. Here we’ll learn about opal mining through a video presentation and visit the showroom to view the opals that came from the mines in this area. We have lunch here before a short drive to visit the Chambers of the Black Hand, an underground gallery with works carved and painted into the walls by the artist, Ron Canlin.
