Thursday 03 February 2022 - Scenic Drive to Pukehina Beach There is nothing better than just hopping in the coach and going for a drive on a summer's day. We are not restricted to time so it will be a full day of leisurely exploring. Today’s scenic drive will take us to the Bay of Plenty, travelling over the Kaimai Ranges and we’ll visit Maketu and Pukehina Beach. We will stop somewhere along the way for you to purchase lunch. On the journey home, we’ll travel via Lake Rotorua and Ngongotaha before arriving back in Hamilton. Friday 11 February 2022 - Awhitu Peninsula Discover a hidden gem full of history, character and natural beauty. Awhitu Peninsula is only an hour and a half from Hamilton, but its vast panoramas across wild, black-sand beaches and coastal cliff-top roads make it a true escape. Our trip takes us to the historical Manukau Heads Lighthouse, jutting out from the tip of the peninsula. The lighthouse is one of only a few in New Zealand that are open to the public. We then return to Pukekohe for lunch at the Franklin Club. Saturday 26 February 2022 - Kauri Block Track, Coromandel We travel to Coromandel Town today to enjoy a leisurely walk. The Kauri Block walk on the Coromandel Peninsula follows a ridge through regenerating bush and native plantings. You may like to walk up the side track which leads you to a pa and offers spectacular views. On completion of our walk there will be time to purchase your lunch in Coromandel Town before we head back to Hamilton. Please bring your walking shoes, sun hat, sunblock and a water bottle with you today. Friday 04 March 2022 - Waiuku River Cruise Today we travel to Waiuku to take a cruise on Waiuku's Vintage Blue Boat - the Ratahi. We’ll enjoy a 2-hour cruise on the Waiuku River and Manukau Harbour. Cruising up the Waiuku River, we'll see the beautiful Waitangi Falls, and travel close to the NZ Steel Mill. Then we’ll pass the Needles, with a pause at a lively little bird sanctuary. We get a taste of the scenic Awhitu Peninsula, before cruising back via historic Sandspit Beach. We’ll stop in Waiuku prior to the cruise to purchase something for lunch to eat while on our cruise. Sunday 20 March 2022 - Clevedon Village Farmers Market Our travels today take us to Clevedon, a town with genuine country charm. We have an earlier start this morning to enable us to visit the Clevedon Village Farmer’s Market. Be tempted by the seasonal offerings of freshly picked fruit and vegetables. Make the most of the opportunity to sample and hand-pick the best provisions and be inspired by cooking tips and recipes from the stallholders. After the village market we travel out to the coast and Kawakawa Bay where you can purchase lunch and enjoy on the waterfront. We travel home via Kaiaua. Tuesday 29 March 2022 - Wairakei Terraces Come along and look through a window into the unique geothermal wonderland of the Wairakei Terraces. This self-guided walk is accompanied by the birdsong that is in harmony with the natural surrounds of flowing water, geysers and billowing steam. The silica-enriched water travels into blue pools and over terraces reminiscent of the original pink and white terraces of Tarawera. Enjoy this crowning jewel of the local landscape before enjoying lunch at Wairakei Golf Club and then travelling home. Thursday 07 April 2022 - Moutohora / Whale Island An early start this morning as we travel to Whakatane for a 4-hour guided tour of Moutohor ā/Whale Island. The island is a pest-free oasis that is home to a number of New Zealand’s rare and endangered plants, birds and reptiles. Our experience starts with a 15-minute boat journey to Moutohar ā/Whale Island aboard a comfortable catamaran. We are guided around the island and will visit a kekno/NZ fur seal colony, view the abundant birdlife on the island including tūturiwhatu/New Zealand dotterel, tīeke/North Island saddleback, kākāriki/red-crowned parakeet, tui and bellbirds. A moderate level of fitness, agility and stability is required on this tour. The landing involves disembarking down a short ladder at the front of the boat directly on to the shore, whilst one aspect of the bushwalk includes a steady incline. Please remember to bring a packed lunch (no fresh fruit, vegetables or seeds allowed due to pest free status), a water bottle, sun protection and sturdy walking shoes today. Tuesday 12 April 2022 - Paradise Valley Wildlife Park Here’s a school holiday treat for the grandparents and grandchildren. Today we travel to Rotorua to visit Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park, set amongst beautifully maintained New Zealand native bush and offering easy walking along flat accessible walkways. Visit the Kea, New Zealand’s infamous alpine parrot; stroll through the waterbird wetland for great views of native and introduced waterfowl, and look out for the different native birds living wild around the park. Pat and feed the very sociable farm animals (own cost for animal feed). While here, we’ll get to see a pride of African lions that can be seen in an enclosure, allowing us to get very close to these wild animals. We’ll also be here for the lion pride feeding at 2.30pm, followed by the kea and possum feeding at 3pm. Please bring a packed lunch with you today. Includes coach, morning tea and admission. Thursday 21 April 2022 - Goldfields Railway Waikino Travel back in time and enjoy a ride on a heritage train with Goldfields Railway. Journey between Waikino and Waihi at the eastern end of the spectacular Karangahake Gorge. Enjoy travelling through an area rich in history, including historic gold mining which shaped much of this part of the Southern Coromandel. After the train journey there will be time to purchase lunch in Waihi before we commence our journey home. Wednesday 27 April 2022 - Thames Historical Museum Our travels today will take us to Thames where we’ll learn about the history of the town with a visit to the Thames Museum. Displays at Thames Museum cover the history of the town and its surroundings from the arrival of Polynesian explorers in the mid-14th century through to the mid- 20th century. The museum also has a display of memorabilia celebrating the history of the Thames Volunteer Fire Brigade which began as the two brigades of Grahamstown and Shortland soon after the discovery of gold. This display includes the oldest fire engine in New Zealand. We’ll enjoy a guided tour here by one of the museum volunteers. After our museum visit we will have lunch at the Grahamstown Bar & Diner before commencing our travel back to Hamilton. Wednesday 25 May 2022 - Paeroa Maritime Park Join us on a trip to Paeroa today to visit the Paeroa Maritime Park. Come and view maritime history and displays of the region including Captain Cook / Northern Steam Ship Co. and their naval displays. This museum is the home to a very important collection of maritime history relating to the role that Paeroa played as a port for unloading mining machinery and equipment in the late 19th century when the goldfields of Waihi and Karangahake were being developed and mined. The vast amounts of gold that were gained from these goldfields were then shipped out of the area via these local ports. After our visit, there will be time to purchase lunch in Paeroa before travelling back to Hamilton. Tuesday 31 May 2022 - Huka Hive Today we travel to Taupo where we are going to be a beekeeper for the day. The Honey Shack Tour is a hands-on beekeeping experience where you can get up close and personal with beehives alongside a beekeeper. Imagine being able to handle frames of honey straight from the hive and take part in the honey extraction process, spin fresh honey from the comb and walk away with your very own jar of honey! Learn all about bees, their different roles in the hive, the honey they craft and other wonderful products they create. Discover the importance of bees to our lives, their essential place in our world and how you can encourage these fascinating creatures to thrive in your own backyard. After our beekeeping experience, we will travel into Taupo for you to purchase lunch before returning back to Hamilton. Please wear long pants and closed in footwear. We’re in no hurry to get to Rotorua so we’ll spend some time enroute in Tirau for some morning tea and time in the shops. On arrival in Rotorua, we’ll take the gentle scenic ride up to the Stratosphere Restaurant by gondola. From the top of the gondola, you can take in the views of Lake Rotorua and the city. We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch together in the restaurant. This will either be a buffet or platters delivered to our table. After lunch we retrace our steps back to Hamilton. We start by departing Hamilton and travelling out to Pirongia for our roadside morning tea. From here we travel along State Highway 39 to Otorohanga where we’ll have time to walk through the Sir Edmund Hillary Walk. We then travel to Waitomo, and will enjoy a delicious lunch at Huhu Café. We'll travel back to Hamilton via State Highway 1.
