Welcome to Bay Tours & Charters Leisure Guide As Christmas and the summer holiday season stampedes towards us, we can hardly believe how fast 2018 has passed. It seems just a moment since we were in the depths of winter and looking forward to the time when the days would lengthen again and the warmth return. The second half of the year contained some fantastic Tour Club highlights. Local lunches like the Winter Progressive and Poronui Lodge were very popular and the Degustation Dinner at E.I.T. was absolutely outstanding. And this years’ World of Wearable Arts show was one of the best ever. Our West Coast Escape tour in October was superb. The opportunity to spend unhurried time through places like Franz Josef, Lake Mathieson and Haast was wonderful and we’ll certainly look to repeat it again at some time in the future. The biennial Hospice Holly Trail took us to some amazing Hawke’s Bay homes and just last month we went cruising around Tasmania in the brand new cruise ship Majestic Princess. It was an amazing experience and, as always, the service and facilities on board were superb. As we put the finishing touches to this edition of the Leisure Guide, we’re super-excited about the amazing array of trips and tours it contains. We can’t wait to get to Disney’s Aladdin in January and in mid-February we have the New Zealand premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s new show Kooza. A return to their classic circus origins. February also sees us in the Nelson area with our bikes for the Tasman Cycle Trail. Taking your own bike makes such a difference to the enjoyment of a gentle few days of cycling. Ken’s getting the BBQ tools out in March for a great day out at Mangakuri Beach and if you enjoyed the Hospice Holly Trail this year, you’ll love the equivalent biennial house & garden treat in Taupo, Baches to Beautiful Homes. In March we also step aboard the luxurious Celebrity Solstice cruise ship for 12 days cruising around the Pacific. We’re very excited to be going to the New Zealand Military Tattoo in Palmerston North in April – the country’s last official commemoration of the centenary of WWI. Locally, a great night will be had when we take in the touring production of that worldwide hit show – CATS, and our popular lunches at both Huka Lodge and The Farm are complimented by a new lunch destination, Elephant Hill. This years’ winter escape in July is to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. 7 days of warmth, fun activities and relaxing time is just the thing to break up winter. The stunning train trip TranzAlpine is back in August and, of course, a little further out in September we lead a group to Europe cruising the great rivers. Speaking of trains. One of the great train journeys of the world is coming next November with our trip to Western Australia which will include the legendary Indian Pacific train from Perth to Sydney. As always, we very much value the friendships and support we receive from our Tour Clubbers and we look forward to sharing some more fun times with you over 2019 and beyond. In the meantime, enjoy reading this latest Leisure Guide and have yourself a great festive season. Kerren, Ken and the Bay Tours team. 2|

Built in the 1930's, it was abandoned virtually the day it was completed and the road back to the river was never finished. Our hosts Joe, Mandy and their family, have lived and worked in this spectacular wilderness for over 40 years. The river remains the only way into their realm so we head up the river by jet boat to the Lodge which sits high above a bend in the river with stunning views. It's a special part of our country where beautiful high cliff-like banks, cloaked in native bush, tower above this ancient waterway adding to the atmosphere of untouched isolation this district has. There's time during our stay to explore Joe & Mandy's farm with plenty of bush or river walks to enjoy. Traditional farmhouse cooking is on the menu as we enjoy the hospitality of the Lodge. 8|
Tour No. 203 Great Country Roads Date Sunday 3rd – Tuesday 5th February Times All collected by 8.30am Cost $995.00 Twin Share | $1,235.00 Single Room Payment Full payment upon booking please Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast x2, morning tea x2, lunch x3, dinner x2, accommodation x2, all activities 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the first car travelling down State Highway 4 – known by locals as The Parapara Road from Raetihi to Whanganui. It's a wonderful scenic drive that follows the Mangawhero River for 85kms. The road is just one of a whole series of formally well used State Highways up and down New Zealand that are largely quiet now. We're going to take this beautiful, almost forgotten, road on our way to another treasure in our national road network, the Forgotten World Highway which gradually climbs from Stratford in Taranaki to Whangamomona. Add to this the history and legend of our own Gentle Annie road linking Hawke's Bay to Taihape and you have a road trip like no other. Join us this coming February as we remind ourselves why this is such a visually rich country to motor through. Day 1: We depart from Omahu and head inland towards the Gentle Annie road, stopping for morning tea in beautiful Kuripapango - quite a sight when the hills of Manuka are in flower. Then it's on to the NZ Army Museum at Waiouru and their Home Fires Cafe for lunch and a look around. We then head around the southern edge of Tongariro National Park and up to the top of 'The Bruce' road up Mt Ruapehu to the Whakapapa Ski Field. There we can take the chair lift to 'The Rockgarden' sitting at an altitude of nearly 6,500 feet. The views north towards the King Country are impressive. After all that open air the Chateau Tongariro Hotel is a welcome haven for our first night. Day 2: After a hearty breakfast we depart towards National Park and Raetihi then begin our drive down 'The Paraparas'. We stop at the beautiful Raukawa Falls for a mid- morning cuppa before we're back on the road following the Mangawhero River to Whanganui and beyond. We stop for lunch at the historic C.T. Natusch designed homestead called Bushy Park set in 100 acres of predator-free bird sanctuary. There's time to wander here before we depart and head north towards Stratford and the start of the Forgotten World Highway with its series of saddles providing stunning views towards Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe to the east and Egmont to the west, together with reminders of Taranaki's pioneering past along the way as well. We spend tonight at the historic Whangamomona Hotel. Day 3: Today we're off to Taumaranui and then on to the tiny settlement of Waihi on the south-western shores of Lake Taupo and lunch at the beautiful Braxmere Resort. From here we drive around the lake, gradually heading homeward. In this age of motorways and major arterial highways, where we're told that the efficient movement of vehicles is vital to the economy, it's easy to forget that just off these main roads are some magnificent drives and stunning spots to stop through our beautiful country waiting to be enjoyed at a slower pace. This will be a wonderful few days with vistas you can only enjoy from the elevated position of our coach. Let's escape and go there together. |9

The show combines acrobatic performance and the art of clowning, while exploring fear, identity, recognition and power. The Innocent's journey brings him into contact with comic characters from an electrifying world full of surprises, thrills, audacity and total involvement. With acts such as the daring Double High Wire, breath-holding Wheel Of Death and astonishing Skeleton Dance' together with the funniest clowns you'll ever see, KOOZA is multi-generational fun at its world-class best and a journey back to where it all began for troupe founder Guy Laliberte. Described by The Independent newspaper in London like this; “KOOZA is a show that blends, almost to perfection, its subcontinental sounds, its stunning lighting and costumes with theatrical ingenuity and acrobatic wonder”. New Cirque du Soleil shows are always hugely popular so don't leave it too long to secure your seat under the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) at Alexandra Park. 10 |

Tour No 309 Mangakuri Beach BBQ Lunch Date Saturday 9th March Times All collected by 10.00am Cost $100.00 Payment As you board, money in an envelope with your name please. Price includes Door to door transport, morning tea, lunch There's something quintessentially Kiwi about a summer barbeque at a bach which sits right on the beach. Many of us have happy memories of long summer holidays by the sea. Mangakuri Station was one of a number of coastal sheep farms established in the 1850's along Hawke's Bay's east coast. Familiar early Hawke's Bay names such as Couper, Russell and Williams all owned and managed Mangakuri Station at one time or another. For decades all the wool from the station was 'surf-loaded' from horse-drawn wagons, at high tide, onto small lighter boats and then transferred to a schooner anchored offshore. The historic building known as 'Waione', situated at the beach edge, formed a central part of this operation of mustering and shearing at the beach. We invite you to join the Bay Tours team at 'Waione' for one of Ken's legendary barbeque lunches and to enjoy a classic Hawke's Bay summers day. Bring your favourite sun hat and we'll do the rest. Places are limited so book your place now. Tour No. 313 Mystery Day Out Date Wednesday 13th March Times All collected by 9.00am Cost $120.00 Payment As you board, money in an envelope with your name please Price includes Door to door transport, morning tea, lunch, all activities Shhhh we’re not saying anything about this iconic regular tour. NOTHING! It’s a mystery. You will remember that they’re always interesting trips, with great sights and destinations so come and join the fun. Trust us, we know what we’re doing! 14 |
Tour No. 315 Cruising the South Pacific Islands Date Friday 15th – Friday 29th March Times All collected by 8.30am Cost $7,295.00 Twin Share | $11,695.00 Single Cabin Payment Full payment upon booking Price includes Door to door transport, flight Auckland – Napier, breakfast, dinner, accommodation, cruise (including all entertainment and meals on board), all transfers, all activities In March 2019 we’re returning to our favourite cruise ship – the elegant and stylish Celebrity Solstice – in order to sail our very own South Pacific. Departing from Auckland with multiple stops in Fiji, both Western and American Samoa and Tonga make this cruise feel like it was arranged especially for us. Rated by highly regarded cruise website Cruise Critic as the best mainstream cruise ship on the seas, Celebrity Solstice manages to feel intimate despite its considerable size. The clever design means it never feels crowded and there’s always a quiet nook to be found. This ship is also rated by many as the best dining experience afloat. Commencing a cruise from Auckland for the very first time next year, Celebrity Solstice is, without question, the finest ship to be cruising Australasia and the South Pacific. Experience the distinct and welcoming cultures of the sun-drenched South Pacific whilst travelling in opulent comfort and luxury….and only unpacking once! Your stateroom will be bigger than on other ships and as we move from island to island the view from your private balcony will become a favourite spot. Here’s a feel for the itinerary; We drive to Auckland (in order to avoid any possible airline delays) and spend the night before our cruise departure in the ‘City of Sails’. Following our very own morning tour visiting some lesser known jewels, we check-in aboard our home for the next 13 nights – the superb Celebrity Solstice. First port-of-call is our own Bay Of Islands for a days’ exploring before we sail off into the blue Pacific and spend a couple of relaxing days aboard our floating wonderland. Lautoka is our first Fijian stop. This northern part of Viti Levu Island is resort country surrounded by sugar cane and rice plantations. The following day sees us in Fiji’s capital, Suva. Take a guided excursion from the ship or visit the Municipal Markets and National Museum under your own steam. A day’s relaxation on board ship is the order of things as we cruise towards Western Samoa and its capital, Apia. The experience of driving through New Zealands’ largest farm – nearly 181,000 hectares spanning a major part of the upper South Island – is a kiwi rite of passage. The stunning scale and rugged beauty of both Molesworth and Rainbow Stations are contrasted by the alpine tranquillity of the village of Hanmer Springs. As well as a FREE DAY in Hanmer Springs itself allowing you time to explore this beautiful alpine village, a new addition to the tour this year is a day in revitalised Kaikoura. Day 1: Today we make our way to Wellington where we take the Interislander ferry through the beautiful Marlborough Sounds to Picton where we’ll stay overnight. Day 2: This morning we set out in our customised 4-wheel drive mini-coaches up the diverse Wairau Valley to St Arnaud and the beautiful Lake Rotoiti. After morning tea, it’s into Rainbow Station and up over the narrow ‘Hells Gates’ high in the Southern Alps, and on to Lake Tennyson. We descend and arrive at Hanmer Springs and the Drifters Inn, our base for the next 3 nights. Day 3: Today we’re off to Kaikoura via Mount Lyford and the Stag & Spey Road. We’ll check out the massive repairs to the road north following the recent earthquakes and say hello to the seals at Point Kean. There’ll be free time in town to explore before we return to Hanmer Springs in the late afternoon. Day 4: You have a FREE DAY to explore or relax in Hanmer Springs. A soak in the hot springs, anyone? Or maybe a wander around the disused Queen Mary Hospital with its variety of heritage buildings. Day 5: Departing around 8.30am we travel up the Clarence River valley and into Molesworth Station. Prepare yourself for the sheer vastness of ‘Isolation Flat’. Cattle share the sides of the sparkling rivers with Canada geese and Paradise ducks. After a break, we head into the upper reaches of the Awatere Valley and then gradually descend before stopping for a ‘cuppa’ at Mt Gladstone Station. Then we’re into vineyard country in the lower Awatere Valley and its back to Picton for the ferry to Wellington. Day 6: We depart Wellington and have a lunch/shopping stop at Palmerston North before wending our way home to Hawke’s Bay. Molesworth and Rainbow Stations make up a land truly alive with romantic ghosts of stockmen and shepherds, dogs and drovers, slough hats and well-worn saddles. It is still the land of the real cowboy, even today, and what an adventure it is to get a glimpse of their way of life. It’s a unique and special corner of New Zealand. It’s a quiet place where everyone knows everyone and community ties are built on rural enterprise and a shared passion for the ocean. Horse riding, tractors on the beach, fresh fish for dinner – it’s all part of the place around here. It will be nearly 6 years since the only other time we’ve taken a tour around ‘the Cape’ by the time we leave on this one. This time we’re reversing the direction we take. Starting in Rotorua and finishing in Gisborne. Day 1: Hawke’s Bay to Rotorua The highlight of today (besides the morning tea at the Rangitaiki Tavern) will undoubtedly be the Treetop Walk through the giant redwoods just out of Rotorua. 23 suspension bridges traverse the gaps between 116-year-old Californian Redwood trees and the heights of the observation decks range between 6 and 12 metres above the ground. Those who have done it – including Tour Club members – say it’s a ‘must do’ when we’re there. We stay at our beloved Novotel Lakeside Rotorua Hotel. Day 2: Rotorua to Whakatane First stop today is Mamaku Blueberries where we’ll have a guided tour and learn more about this delicious superfood – and enjoy the best blueberry muffins you’ll ever have! Day 3: Whakatane to Hicks Bay This morning we continue east stopping firstly to enjoy the view at Kohi Point in Ohope. Then it’s off to Opotiki – stopping, naturally, at the oyster caravan on the way – to get our supplies for a picnic lunch beside the sea towards Te Kaha. After a wander (in East Coast time) we head towards Waihau Bay to look out for the wild horses that they say are friendly before arriving at Hicks Bay and our motel. Day 4: Hicks Bay to Gisborne Our first stop out of Hicks Bay is to view the oldest recorded Pohutukawa tree in NZ and the beautiful St Mary’s church at Tikitiki. Ruatoria is the next township and then it’s 20 |
on to Tokomaru Bay and a hearty country pub lunch. It’s a stunning drive to Tolaga Bay where we’ll walk out onto NZ’s longest wharf from back in the days when large coastal freighters plied these waters. The fabulous scenery continues all the way into Gisborne where we stay at the Emerald Hotel. Day 5: Gisborne to Hawke’s Bay This morning we have a very special treat. We’re off to feed the Stingrays at Tatapouri Beach out of Gisborne. What a thrill it will be to see these graceful creatures up close. Then we start heading south stopping at Morere Hot Pools set amongst the native bush for a soak and lunch. After lunch we continue home, stopping for an ice cream in Wairoa on the way. This tour is called a ‘Getaway’ as it takes us to a part of our country rarely visited by tourists. It simply delivers stunning coastal scenery day after day and puts us in touch with a New Zealand that hasn’t changed much in 50 years. And that’s worth getting away to! In June 2019 the magnificent Civic Theatre in Auckland will host the only New Zealand season of this record-breaking theatre spectacular. The tragic casualty lists of The Great War included over 1 million horses – including 10,000 shipped from New Zealand. Like their human counterparts, they came from every corner of the Empire and every background. Through astonishing life-size puppetry, the horses are brought to life, and in particular the story of a remarkable horse and special bond. At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is taken by the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert meanwhile, who has remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. Hailed as a visual masterpiece of theatre and as the winner of two Olivier Awards in London and six Tony Awards on Broadway, WAR HORSE is finally coming to New Zealand. With the centenary of WWI still fresh in our minds, join us at the Civic as we follow Joey and Albert through 'the war to end all wars'. A not-to-be-missed event. Need a gift idea? Remember we sell gift vouchers for any occasion! 26 |
