Welcome to Bay Tours & Charters Leisure Guide Hello again to all Tour Club members, As I sit here at my desk writing this, the wine tour staff are coming and going reminding me what a busy time of the year summer is. And not just for us here at Bay Tours. Here in Ahuriri, Napier, the revitalisation of this old warehousing area continues at pace. The suburb seems to be welcoming new companies into the area all the time. This time a year ago, we were the ‘new kids in town’ and whilst it’s very different from rural Hastings where we were, we love it. We’re in the thick of things now and that’s just how we like it. We’ve taken some incredible tours since the last edition of the Leisure Guide was published in July. In August, we enjoyed a wonderful day out around the Kahuranaki district including a visit to the farm of Tour Club members Hugh and Robyn Pearce. September saw the first of our annual pilgrimages to the World of Wearable Art shows in Wellington. It continues to be a truly world-class production and we love it. October was a huge month for Tour Club trips of all kinds. An incredible day was spent at Smedley Station (the farming cadet school) and the hospitality of the trustees, staff and cadets really added to the day. That month we also took A Steam Train Journey from the headquarters of Steam Incorporated in Paekakariki to Wanganui and back to Palmerston North. There’s something that appeals to everyone about a steam locomotive coming through town. The dire weather predictions didn’t eventuate during our superb visit to Kapiti Island, also in October. In November, we took a group to Norfolk Island for a week and then to Brisbane for our North Queensland Cruise. Both experiences were fantastic and the locals really looked after us. In this summer edition, we’ve got a whole heap of new trips, shows and extended tours to tempt you. Following a great response from the trip in the previous Guide, we’ve scheduled a further visit to The Bridge to Nowhere at the end of January. A new addition to the ‘Luxury Lodge Lunch’ format following Huka Lodge and The Farm is Lunch at The Lodge at Kinloch, a luxury hideaway overlooking New Zealand’s top ranked golf course. In March, we’re biking the Otago Rail Trail and also taking in the Islands of the Hauraki Gulf for good measure. For the show lovers amongst us we’re off to international productions like Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in Wellington and West Side Story in Auckland as well as Mary Poppins right here in Napier. Later in May we head away on the much-awaited Murray River trip and in June we’re inviting people to join us on a week’s winter break in Rarotonga. It’ll be just the thing to fight the seasonal blues. At the end of 2017 we’ve scheduled our most adventurous cruise itinerary to date. Heading to the marvellous city of Singapore where we’ll depart and cruise to resort islands and former colonial outposts along the old Spice Route before ending up in Fremantle 12 days later. All this and a hugely exciting array of day trips chock full of garden visits, scrummy lunches and unique destinations. We continue to consider ourselves lucky to be able to travel near and far with our Tour Club friends and we look forward to making new ones on the trips and tours in this latest Leisure Guide. On behalf of our dedicated office staff and wonderful Drivers and Hosts, Ken and I would like to wish you a very happy festive season and an enjoyable summer ahead. Kerren’s Quiet Whisper Ever since we took our first South of the South trip in March 2015 we’ve had people asking us when we’re going to schedule it again. So, for those of you who are keen to explore the wonders of the bottom of the South Island from Fiordland in the West to The Catlins on the East coast and everything in- between including Stewart Island, it’s on its way. (Here’s a clue……..think autumn colours ) While we’re talking about the ‘Back by Popular Demand’ category, look for that firm favourite, the Twenty Tunnels tour in the next addition as well. The folks from the independent republic of Whangamomona are looking forward to welcoming us back. Haha! And on the horizon, we’ve been wanting to spend more time exploring the West Coast of the South Island – particularly heading south through Ross, Harihari, Franz Josef and through Haast to Lake Hawea. It’s a relatively untouched part of New Zealand with some of the most awe- inspiring natural vistas you’ll find anywhere. Price includes Door to door transport, morning tea, lunch, all activities Following the enormous response to our Big Day Out in January of this year, we felt it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t plan a similar day in 2017. In contrast to last year we’re starting by heading north and following an anti-clockwise circuit. After one of the legendary morning teas at the Rangataiki Tavern we’ll stop to smell the roses at beautiful Waipahihi Reserve gardens on the outskirts of Taupo. Then it’s around the lake to the Tongariro National Trout Centre at Turangi for a brief stop. Enjoy the live trout from the Underwater Viewing Chamber or read about the history of this world-famous trout fishing area. Next, take in the stunning scenery of the Desert Road and the iconic volcanos of the Central North Island as we continue south to the National Army Museum at Waiouru. Here you’ll have plenty of time to learn more about New Zealand’s military history or just relax over lunch in the museum café. Then we head home enjoying the spectacular views from the Gentle Annie and Inland Patea district on the way. A grand touring day with world-class scenery and a variety of destinations. |7 BAY TOURS AND CHARTERS HAWKE’S BAY LEISURE GUIDE JANUARY 2017 TO JULY 2017
Tour No. 128 Gardens of Ashhurst & Pohangina Date Saturday 28 January Times All collected by 8.15am Cost $165.00 Payment As you board, money in an envelope with your name please. Price includes Door to door transport, morning tea, lunch, all activities Nestled at the foot of the Ruahine Range and near the western end of the Manawatu Gorge is the district of Ashhurst. Part of the original huge Manchester Block purchased from the Colonial Government in 1871 by a Colonel Feilding, a director of the London based Emigrants and Colonists Aid Corporation. Another director was Henry G. Ashhurst Esq. Over the next 10 years some 1700 assisted immigrants arrived from England and he and the other directors were immortalised by having settlements named after them. Ashhurst has always been a fertile farming area for sheep and cattle as well as seeming to have more than the usual number of nurseries and extensive private gardens. It is also the gateway to the tranquil Pohangina Valley to the north. Our day begins with morning tea and a wander around the Dannevirke garden of Lynne and Ken Mitchell. Their large rural garden has a nationwide reputation and they love to receive visitors to enjoy the garden with them. Then we're off to the majestic Greenhaugh Garden in Ashhurst. This 2-hectare semi- formal garden surrounds the 1874 homestead and owners Lynne and Les Atkins have developed it over nearly 40 years. A hearty country lunch follows at the nearby Ashhurst Inn before we head into the Pohangina Valley itself. We'll visit the Luttrell family who have, over many years, managed to preserve the largest remaining stand of Kahikatea – or White Pine – in the Manawatu. They're also regenerating wetlands and a native tree arboretum with over 100 named species. Another aspect of their 5-hectare property is their Pioneer Museum featuring hundreds of items, all in working order, that were used by the colonists who first came to the area and subsequent generations. A wonderful practical history of a pioneering time. This will be a great day out amongst a variety of gardens celebrating the beauty of the rural landscape. Tour No. 129 Bridge to Nowhere #2 Date Sunday – Wednesday 29 January – 1 February Times All collected by 8.45am Cost $1275.00 Twin Share | Single Room unavailable on this trip Payment Full payment upon booking Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast x3, morning tea x3, afternoon tea x3, dinner x3, accommodation x3, all activities Due to the popularity of this tour, together with the very limited number of places available, we’re delighted to offer a further opportunity to experience this unique adventure. Deep in the heart of the Whanganui National Park wilderness, completely surrounded by native bush, stands a 135-foot-long concrete road bridge similar to any you might find spanning a suburban river or city stream. No roads lead to it and it is accessible only via bush trails. How did it come to be there? Why was such a significant structure built in such a remote place? The fact is that the bridge symbolises a failed government attempt at back country settlement by a community of returned World War 1 servicemen and their families. By 1942 the last remaining families had simply walked off the land. The 25-year battle with the wild was lost. It's a fascinating story which we're going to discover when we head to one of the most remote parts of the North Island – the upper reaches of the Whanganui River. It's 5 years since we last took a group to this most unique of bridges. Here's how the itinerary will go: Day 1: We leave Hawke's Bay via the Gentle Annie road and stop for lunch and a look around at the National Army Museum in Waiouru. Then after a brief stop at Tangiwai we make our way to our accommodation for the night – the highly acclaimed Powderhorn Hotel in Ohakune. Day 2: After a quick stop at Raurimu, to learn more about the famous railway spiral, we grab an early lunch at National Park before heading to Pipiriki, deep in the Whanganui National Park. Our hosts at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge will collect us by jet boat and take us up the river to the remotely situated Lodge where we will spend the night. Day 3: By jet boat again, we head further up the river to the point where our hosts can guide us along a walking track to the legendary Bridge to Nowhere itself. We'll enjoy our packed lunch by the bridge and spend some time exploring the area before making our way back to the Lodge by jet boat once again. Day 4: Today we leave this stunning area and, after the jet boat returns us to Pipiriki, we enjoy the scenery of Tongariro National Park again before stopping at Tokaanu for morning tea and Taupo for lunch on our way home. There are few sites with the mysteriousness of former human occupation in New Zealand. The Bridge to Nowhere is one of those rare examples where man's ingenuity and resourcefulness couldn't bring nature to heel. Join us for this scenically stunning trip into one of the country's last remaining wilderness regions. Please Note: The intimate size of the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge means numbers for this trip are severely limited. Please contact us quickly if you'd like to be part of a unique experience. |9 BAY TOURS AND CHARTERS HAWKE’S BAY LEISURE GUIDE JANUARY 2017 TO JULY 2017
Tour No. 214 Ngamatea Station Date Tuesday 14 February Times All collected by 8.15am Cost $135.00 Payment As you board, money in an envelope with your name please. Price includes Door to door transport, morning tea, lunch. One of the pre-eminent North Island high country stations is Ngamatea. The first thing that stands out about this huge inland holding, bound by the Rangitikei and Ngaruroro rivers, is the sheer scale of the place. Covering 70,000 acres in total and with 55,000 sheep and 5,500 beef cattle, as well as extensive tussock country providing top deer hunting, everything about Ngamatea is big. A strong emotional commitment to wool is deeply woven into the history of Ngamatea and we’re timing our visit with summer shearing in full swing. With a 20-stand shearing shed taking an annual clip of around 180,000kg of wool there are few properties to rival it. We’ll watch them shearing and enjoy lunch on the Station with the Station Manager joining us to tell us all about the place. Sheep farming on this scale is rare in the North Island these days and the day promises to be a great experience. Access and numbers for our visit are tightly restricted by agreement. Act immediately to secure your place and a rare chance to visit a Hawke’s Bay icon in all its glory. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tour No. 218 Wings Over Wairarapa Date Saturday 18 February Times All collected by 7.15am Cost $185.00 Payment Full payment upon booking Price includes Door to door transport, morning tea, lunch, entry ticket to air show The 10th edition of this magnificent air show is sure to be the best yet. What an incredible event the previous edition, two years ago, was. We took a big group and the flying displays featured over 70 aircraft from a multitude of WW1 fighters from Sir Peter Jackson's Old Stick & Rudder Co. to an emotional farewell to the RNZAF's fleet of iconic Iroquois helicopters and welcome to their successors, the futuristic NH90's. And every era in between featured as well. This year expect an even bigger and more spectacular days' flying at Masterton's Hood Aerodrome. We'll be setting up a 'Bay Tours HQ' in the carpark on the day. With gazebos for cover and a BBQ lunch running so you can come and go at leisure while you wander the many static displays of contemporary and vintage military vehicles, the local Food and Wine market and much more. As with last time, we'll be aiming to get there in time for the first of the days' air displays at 11.30am. This is a day out like no other. Demand was high last time so don't delay in booking your place. BAY TOURS AND CHARTERS HAWKE’S BAY 10 | LEISURE GUIDE JANUARY 2017 TO JULY 2017
Tour No. 223 Winery Progressive Lunch Date Thursday 23 February Times All collected by 11.45am Cost $125.00 Payment As you board, money in an envelope with your name please. Price includes Door to door transport, lunch As we know, many of the top restaurants in Hawke's Bay are situated at some of the regions many wineries. So, we thought it'd be a great idea to marry the Progressive Lunch concept to a focus solely on winery restaurants. So here it is – the inaugural Winery Progressive Lunch. Our first stop for Entrée will be Church Road winery in Taradale. These days the restaurant has expanded to occupy the magnificent Tom McDonald Cellar which looks out onto extensive lawns and Sugar Loaf Reserve. Head Chef, Jenny Parton, has some great ideas in mind so it'll be a top way to start our lunch. Then we're off to Vidal winery in Hastings. The whole concept of restaurants in wineries in New Zealand began right here at Vidal’s in 1979. No-one's been doing it for longer. Chef, Nathan Beilby will be creating our Main Course with his renowned attention to detail. Finally, we head to Black Barn Bistro nestled in the heart of a vineyard outside Havelock North. With views across the trellised vines towards the Heretaunga Plain beyond, the bistro has a well-deserved reputation for its glorious Desserts. So, save some room. A great day celebrating an abundant range of Hawke's Bay produce is in store. Bay Tours and Charters Gift Vouchers Have you heard about our gift vouchers? Tour No. 302 Otago Rail Trail Date Thursday – Wednesday 2 - 8 March Times All collected by 8.30am Cost $3285.00 Twin Share | $3925.00 Single Room Payment $1000.00 upon booking, balance due Friday January 13 Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast x6, dinner x6, accommodation x6, bike hire, flights, all transfers, Taieri train, curling There’s no doubt, the Otago Central Rail Trail meanders through some of the most spectacular country anyone can imagine and has become the original ‘Great Cycle Ride’ of New Zealand. Rising from the ashes of the Otago Central rail line that closed in 1990, the Rail Trail came into being following the ripping up of the old tracks between Clyde and Middlemarch. The Department of Conservation bought the narrow corridor in 1993 as a reserve and soon after the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust was established to undertake the conversion and ongoing maintenance of the new cycle trail. National and international ratings of the trail as an experience have been stratospheric since. Kerren and Ken, those legendary doyens of the bike saddle, invite you to join them on a leisurely 5 Day cycle through some of New Zealand’s most spectacular scenery. Vast dramatic landscapes, old stone buildings, viaducts and tunnels, little country pubs, all seem to sparkle in the glow of the unique ‘big sky’ light that Central Otago is famous for. With premium, super-comfortable bike hire, daily luggage transport, top-notch accommodation (with spa pools) and morning & evening meals all taken care of, all you need do is relax and enjoy cycling through this iconic piece of New Zealand. Here’s how the tour will go; (each day shows the distance to cycle and the approximate time spent in the saddle over the course of the day – interspersed with stops) Day 1 Hawke’s Bay – Clyde: We fly into Queenstown and transfer to our accommodation at Clyde. Day 2 Clyde – Omakau (37kms/4.25hrs): We start with each person being fitted perfectly with their bike before we are all kitted out and briefed on the trail ahead. Today we ride through Alexandra, Galloway and Chatto Creek before arriving at Blacks Hotel just outside Omakau. Day 3 Omakau – Oturehua (30kms/2.45hrs): It’s a gentle climb today through stunning country with stops at Lauder, Auripo and Ida Valley before rolling into Oturehua and our accommodation at Main Beach Cottages. We’ll fire up the bbq tonight. Day 4 Oturehua – Ranfurly (26kms/2.75hrs): Gilchrists General Store in Otureha is the oldest general store in NZ. We’ll grab some snacks from here to enjoy along the way. Today we head over the trail’s highest point before stopping off at the Wedderburn Tavern, which is about halfway, for lunch. Then it’s on to Ranfurly. Here we’ll take a shuttle (Yay!) to Naseby Lodge where we stay tonight. BAY TOURS AND CHARTERS HAWKE’S BAY 12 | LEISURE GUIDE JANUARY 2017 TO JULY 2017
Day 5 Ranfurly – Kokonga (18kms /2hrs): Just a short cycling distance today. And that’s because this morning we are going curling in Naseby, NZ’s curling capital. Then the shuttle takes us back to Ranfurly, we saddle up, and it’s off to Waipiata and Kokonga for an early finish. We’ll stay at Tussock Lodge and Waipiata Motels tonight. Day 6 Kokonga – Middlemarch (42kms/4.25hrs): It’s literally all downhill today to Middlemarch with lots of stops at places with such memorable names as Daisybank, Hyde and Rock & Pillar. Once at Middlemarch we return our bikes and board the Tairei Gorge train which will take us through the spectacular gorge itself and on to Dunedin where we’ll stay at the beautiful Victorian-era Wains Hotel. Hot bath, anyone? Day 7 Dunedin – Hawke’s Bay: A free morning today to just relax or explore central Dunedin. Then it’s off to the airport and our flight home to ‘the Bay’. We reckon we’re going to need to be in some cycling form and get some mileage under our belts before we go. So we thought it’d be fun to organise a few ‘practice’ rides, as a group, leading up to this fabulous tour. This trip will take us through some of New Zealand’s most incredible countryside. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure like no other. Because of accommodation constraints the group can only be a small one. For more detailed information and a fuller itinerary please contact the office and speak to Kerren. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tour No. 304 Martinborough Fair Date Saturday 4 March Times All collected by 6.30am – ouch! Tour No 306 Islands of Hauraki Gulf #2 Date Monday – Friday 6 - 14 March Times All collected by 8.30am Cost $3735.00 Twin Share | $4635.00 Single Room Payment $1500.00 upon booking, balance due Monday 30 January Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast x8, morning tea x4, lunch x6, dinner x8, accommodation x8, all activities Any discussion about the most picturesque areas of New Zealand wouldn’t be complete without including the Hauraki Gulf – that body of crystal-clear water that lies off the east coast of Auckland. Framed by Matakana and Whangaparaoa to the north, Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour to the west, the Firth of Thames to the south and Coromandel Peninsula in the east, the Hauraki Gulf is blessed with many spectacular islands with diverse personalities, histories, climate and geography. From the earliest Maori settlers, through the threat of invasion of the two World Wars to today, the islands of ‘the Gulf’ portray a unique picture of northern New Zealand. Some of the islands can be visited within a day from Auckland and some lie further out to sea. We’ll be spending varying amounts of time discovering the distinct characters of four of these islands – Great Barrier, Waiheke, Kawau and Rangitoto. Each with their own story. Here’s a glimpse at our itinerary; Day 1: We leave Hawke’s Bay and head north to Auckland and settle into our hotel. Day 2: Today we depart from downtown Auckland’s historic Ferry Building and cruise across to the closest island we’ll visit on this trip – Rangitoto. There we’ll take a guided tour on the ‘Volcanic Explorer’ road train which will take us to the summit. Upon our return to Auckland we then take the car ferry from Half Moon Bay to Waiheke Island, our home for the next two nights. Day 3: Local Greg Hartley tells us he’s been on Waiheke “longer than electricity has”. We’re very excited to have Greg spend the day showing us his island including Stony Batter at the remote eastern end of the island, Dead Dog’s Bay, the pioneering Goldwater vineyard and some spots only the locals know. Day 4: This morning we’ll wander the main village of Oneroa with an opportunity to pick up any final local memento before enjoying a leisurely lunch at a rural winery. Up to Sunset Rock for panoramic views of Port Fitzroy Harbour before Steve drives us down the east coast by bus enjoying great views of Rakitu Island, The Windy Canyon and Pacific Ocean Panoramas. Then we return to Great Barrier Lodge for a relaxing evening. Day 8: This morning it’s off to Hot Springs Track for a short bush walk to a beautiful Nikau Palm grove. Then Steve takes us to Okupu Beach and some of the oldest Pohutukawa trees in the country. Before lunch we tour the ‘forgotten wharf’, old stone bridges and deep gullied streams at Blind Bay. After lunch on the beach we enjoy a cuppa at Claris Texas Café before heading back to the airport and our flight back to Auckland. Tour No. 326 Adele In Concert – Auckland Date Sunday – Monday 26-27 March Times All collected by 8am Cost $695.00 Twin Share | $825.00 Single Room Payment $300.00 upon booking, balance due Wednesday 1 February (Ticket cost is non-refundable) Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast, morning tea, dinner, accommodation, premium ticket to the show Nobody living within a bull’s roar of a radio or video screen can help but know about the musical phenomenon that is Adele. Since sweeping the world in 2011 with her album called simply ‘21’ the cockney girl with the big laugh and even bigger singing voice has endeared herself to all with her beautiful and very personal songs about the ups and downs of romance and relationships. With songs, such a ‘Someone Like You’, ‘Rolling In The Deep’ and ‘Set Fire To The Rain’, the album broke all sorts of Billboard Top 100 records and earned Adele a staggering 7 Grammy Awards. Her next album ‘25’ sent Adele’s profile and popularity even further into the stratosphere with songs like ‘Hello’, ‘When We Were Young’ and ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’. As if this wasn’t enough critical acclaim, she added an Academy Award in 2013 for Best Original Song for her theme song for the James Bond movie ‘Skyfall’. The New York Times chief music critic, John Pareles, wrote that “..Adele can seethe, sob, rasp, swoop, lilt and belt, in ways that draw more attention to the song than to the singer.” And comparisons to Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Annie Lennox and Amy Winehouse are numerous. It was big news a few weeks ago, when all 3 of her 2017 Auckland concerts were sold out in 20 minutes. That’s more than 100,000 tickets, which made her the fastest selling concert event in New Zealand…..EVER. Phew! So, imagine how excited we are to offer this limited and extraordinary opportunity to Hawke’s Bay people to see a once-in-a-generation songstress live at Mt Smart Stadium. Accommodation in Auckland for these concerts was like hen’s teeth but our great network of relationships with the hotels up there have come up trumps again. So enough said. The stage is all set for what will be, without question, the concert experience of 2017. Its proximity to the out-of-control Auckland has resulted in hundreds of people escaping to a better way of life 'south of the Bombays'. The English-style character of the hedgerows criss-crossing the rolling pastureland is still there, but the growth in attractions – both ancient and brand new – would have been unimaginable even 10 years ago The region is now a powerhouse in both of New Zealands' two top income earning industries of dairy and tourism. With its stunning natural beauty of lush green tones, an ever-growing list of major tourist destinations, and sitting between the country's largest city and the thermal wonderland of the Bay of Plenty, the Waikato is enjoying an unprecedented surge of growth and diversity. We invite you to join us as we head to the area for a few days to experience some of the new, and not so new, initiatives that are part of the Waikato boom. Here's a quick summary of the itinerary; Day 1: After a delicious morning tea with Marion and Duncan of the Rangataiki Tavern and a lunch stop in Tirau, we make our way to the Hobbiton Movie Set located outside Matamata. Here, in 1999, Sir Peter Jackson began to create his interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginary Lord Of The Rings world 'The Shire'. Expanded further for 'The Hobbit' movie trilogy, the extensive 5-hectare film set remains fully intact. Our guided tour will begin at the 'Shire's Rest' as we wander by coach and foot throughout the village of Hobbiton before finishing at 'The Green Dragon' inn for a cuppa or something stronger. Our return to the real world will see us head to the wonderful Novotel Hamilton Hotel which will be our home for the next couple of nights. Day 2: We begin a busy day with a visit to one of the regions secret gems, The Sculpture Park at Waitakaruru Arboretum. Opened by appointment only, this garden and arboretum spreads over 17 hectares and features more than 50 sculptures along a 2km long nature trail. Dramatic changes in light and foliage, wildlife and vistas guarantee a breath- taking experience. Then we head south to one of the country's iconic visitor destinations. Since the 1880's Waitomo Glow-worm Caves have been attracting people from far and wide to view the glow-worms unique to New Zealand. Floating through the starry wonderland by boat as your expert guide explains the formations of thousands of magical glow-worms above is one of the special experiences to be had. As a complete contrast, we'll also visit the new Cycling New Zealand High Performance Velodrome at Cambridge. Known as the Avantidrome, it is the training headquarters for the national track cycling teams that have performed so well in recent Olympic Games and World Championships. We'll be given a guided tour of the facilities and be able to watch the NZ Team training on the track. Phew! What an amazing day. Day 3: After a leisurely start, on our last day in the Waikato we'll visit one of the great public gardens of New Zealand. Hamilton Gardens incorporates a series of distinctive individual gardens such as English Flower Garden, Japanese Garden of Contemplation and the Modernist Garden. The whole site now covers more than 50 hectares of superbly manicured gardens and lawns and in 2014 was awarded 'International Garden of The Year'. We'll enjoy a guided tour followed by lunch in the Italian Renaissance Garden before setting off for home in the afternoon. This journey through such a varied and enlivened region will surprise and delight you. Don't delay in booking your place on this highly-anticipated tour. Tour No. 511 Shakespeare At the Globe Theatre – Auckland Date Thursday - Friday 11-12 May Times All collected by 8.00am Cost $620.00 Twin Share | $740.00 Single Room Payment $150.00 upon booking, balance due Friday 10 March, (ticket cost is non-refundable) Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast, morning tea, accommodation, dinner, premium ticket to the show What an exciting opportunity to see the work of the greatest writer of the English Language performed in the environment that William Shakespeare himself pictured. The original Globe Theatre was the first purpose-built playhouse in Elizabethan London and became the centre of performance for Shakespeare and the rest of the theatre company known as ‘The King’s Men’. He eventually became a shareholder in the theatre building itself until his death in 1616. The theatre continued until Oliver Cromwell and his Puritans closed it in 1642. Shortly after this it was demolished to make way for new housing. Many Shakespeare scholars around the world believe that the experience of watching a performance of the bard’s work in the original Globe space was a transformative one. In 1997 the dream of a re-constructed Globe Theatre in its original form on London’s south bank was completed. Last year, here in New Zealand, a consortium of actors, directors and engineers succeeded in creating a ‘Pop-Up’ Globe Theatre in central Auckland. It became the world’s first full scale temporary working replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. The shape of the 900-seat theatre ensured that no-one was more than 15 metres from the stage. Following the success of the initial 2016 ‘Pop-Up Globe’ season, the theatre has been re- built in the gardens of beautiful Ellerslie Racecourse and we’d like to invite you to join us at a performance of one of Shakespeare’s finest comedies – ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. As a classic comical romance, the story goes a bit like this; Travelling home in the summer heat, a group of soldiers break their journey at a luxurious mansion inhabited by a wealthy merchant and his beautiful entourage. But while the valiant Claudio and beautiful Hero are head over heels in love, the cynical Benedick swears he’ll never be married - and particularly not to the quick-witted Beatrice. Or will he? Mayhem ensues. With a contemporary setting, and performed by a full cast in spectacular costumes that blend the past and present, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ is an invitation to a joyful and uproarious house party, combining live music, dance and performances by a specially formed international ensemble. This is a unique opportunity to experience Shakespeare as he wanted you to. In the spirit of this intimate theatre, our group size will be kept small. Tour No. 516 Murray River & Beyond Date Tuesday – Tuesday 16 – 30 May Times All collected by 11.30am Cost $8349.00 Twin Share | $10440.00 Single Room Payment $1500.00 upon booking, balance due Tuesday 21 March Price includes Door to door transport, flights Napier-Melbourne, Adelaide-Napier, coach Great Ocean Road, Murray River Cruise, all accommodation, all breakfasts, dinner x12, all group activities At over 2,500 kilometres, the Murray River is one of the longest in the world. The river basin covers one third of the Australian continent across the states of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria before the river itself reaches the Indian Ocean through South Australia. One of the great Australian experiences is a trip up ‘The Murray’ on a riverboat and we’re taking a cruise along part of this water highway aboard the Southern Hemisphere’s largest inland paddle wheeler – the MV Murray Princess. Over the 5-day journey between the historic river ports of Mannum and Blanchetown we’ll experience the magic and majesty of spectacular scenery from towering cliffs to expansive farmlands as well as seeing the great variety of Australian wildlife that inhabit the riverlands. Combine this with an extensive list of excursions, off the boat, exploring rural South Australia and you have an incredible travel experience. The entire tour of 14 days comprises four experiences. Firstly, a few days spent in the exciting cosmopolitan city of Melbourne, then 3 days wandering the Great Ocean Road along Australia’s southern coast to the Murray River. Then, at the conclusion of the cruise we’ll enjoy a few days in the gracious, historic city of Adelaide. Here’s a quick summary of the itinerary; Days 1–4 Melbourne: We fly into Melbourne where our base in the Victorian capital will be at the lovely Clarion Suites Gateway Hotel overlooking the Yarra River. A mixture of pre-arranged tours of the city and surrounding region, and free time at leisure will allow each person to pursue their individual interests. Perhaps a little shopping at Queen Victoria or Prahran markets, a guided tour of the great M.C.G. or the National Gallery of Victoria, a day in the Yarra Valley wine region, or simply wander Melbourne’s famous Laneways or Chinatown. The free central-city trams will help you get around. The difficult decision in this city is what to leave out! Days 5–7 Great Ocean Road: Southwest of Melbourne, beyond the city of Geelong, lies the coastal route known to Australians as the Great Ocean Road. A mixture of small seaside towns, stunning clifftop views and glorious rolling countryside, this area has been largely bypassed by travellers since the National Highway A8 was built direct to Adelaide. We’ll take our time and stop at lovely towns like Anglesea, Lorne and Warrnambool and admire the views at places like The 12 Apostles, Great Otway National Park and Loch Ard Gorge. This is a great way to get to the start of our Murray River cruise at Mannum in South Australia. BAY TOURS AND CHARTERS HAWKE’S BAY 24 | LEISURE GUIDE JANUARY 2017 TO JULY 2017
