Welcome to Bay Tours & Charters Leisure Guide A warm, mid-winter greeting to all Tour Club members and friends, What a busy time this winter seems to have been for us here at Bay Tours. We’re in the process of installing a new electronic booking system that will help make many of our internal processes more efficient and allow the various parts of our business to ‘talk to each other’. This and other projects have kept our heads down through winter so it’s been a real pleasure working on this latest edition of the Leisure Guide. The first half of 2018 has been full of wonderful experiences and destinations. In January we had a wonderful day Steaming through The Gorge and everyone on board the vintage train loved the unique views of the now closed Manawatu Gorge and Tararua districts. Look out for a vintage train journey through the rugged Rimutakas in this issue. Our South of The South tour in April was a memorable trip around the lower South Island visiting both well known and unknown places with a fabulous bunch of Tour Clubbers and meeting loads of interesting locals. On a spectacular late autumn day in May we crossed off something on many people’s bucket list when we helicoptered out to the other-worldly volcanic wilderness that is White Island. Nobody who experienced that day will ever forget it. As I write this I’m still basking in the warm glow of Rarotonga and Aitutaki which we, and others in the Tour Club, have just returned from. There’s certainly something about the Islands. We’re very excited about this latest edition of the Leisure Guide which is, once again, brimming with all manner of tempting tours from wonderful day trips to epic journeys. Shows in Wellington or Auckland like the stylish Chicago, Kiwi icon World of Wearable Arts and the worldwide hit Aladdin will be stunning visual and musical feasts. Favourite lunches such as Winter Progressive are complimented by other lunch trips to luxurious Mangapapa Hotel and exclusive Poronui Lodge. We also feature our first Degustation Dinner – a cascade of courses from the clever chefs at E.I.T. There’s still a few places left on both of our cruise offerings over Spring/Summer - Tasmania on the brand new Majestic Princess cruise ship and the South Pacific aboard our beloved Celebrity Solstice will be amazing, luxurious experiences. Following the very popular Hauraki Cycle Trail we enjoyed in March, we’re giving people the opportunity to, once again, take their own bike to cycle the Tasman Cycle Trail in Nelson. What a great part of the country to enjoy at a slower pace. As we hunker down and ride the winter out, we’re excited at the thought of spending fun- filled days with our Tour Club friends on the many great tours and trips over the next six months and beyond that feature in this issue. Bon voyage! Kerren, Ken and the Bay Tours team. Cover photo – Bay of Islands Tour #1224 Hole in the Rock Cruise 2|

Tour No. 1027 West Coast Escape Date Saturday 27th October – Friday 2nd November Times All collected by 7.30am Cost $3895.00 Twin Share | $4595.00 Single Room Payment $1000.00 upon booking, balance due Wednesday 29th August Price includes Door to door transport, ferry crossing, helicopter flight, breakfast x6, morning tea x3, lunch x4, dinner x6, accommodation x6, all activities Through various tours over the last few years we’ve ‘dipped our toe’ into the South Island’s West Coast. The region remains a steadfastly remote part of New Zealand. To even begin to get a feel for the place it takes a few days to get around what is the country’s largest region. From the highest mountains and stunning coastal scenery to dense rainforests and everything in between. Steeped in myth and legend from ancient Maori pounamu (greenstone) trails and Moa hunts to pioneering settlers and tough miner tales, ‘the Coast’ is a world apart. Where every passing car waves to you and the hospitality is warm and ‘old school’. In October we’re heading for the Coast. From Westport in the north to Haast in the south, we’ll meander through this fascinating region where the natural environment still dominates most people’s lives in some way. Here’s a summary of the itinerary; Day 1: We depart Hawke’s Bay by coach and make our way to Wellington where we catch the Interislander ferry across Cook Strait and through the magnificent Marlborough Sounds to Picton for the night. Day 2: Today we meander towards the West Coast via the Wairau Valley, Murchison and Reefton. Feel the pace of life slow as we head south-west. For the next two nights we’ll be based in Greymouth. Day 3: Today we take a very special journey. Firstly, we follow the coast north to Westport where the real journey begins. In four-wheel drive vehicles we leave the highway and follow river beds into lush, native rainforest towards the remote and privately owned Awakari Valley at the foot of the Paparoa Range. Here is the domain of Johnny Currie – former farmer, logger, deerstalker and gold miner. Johnny lives life ‘off-the-grid’ as his forebears did in this area when they came looking for gold 150 years ago. Johnny’s knowledge of bush lore is legendary. Over the day, as we move slowly through Johnny’s valley he’ll point out Moa bones, limestone caves, rare NZ plants and fish. Red Deer will be seen often. Johnny will share a billy tea and sausage sizzle lunch with us. On our way back out our guide will also take us to visit Warren Stratford and his astonishing private John Deere farm machinery museum. What a day spent seemingly in another world. 14 |
Day 4: It’s time to head south today and we’ll stop, first, at a Greenstone workshop in Hokitika to watch craftsmen carve this remarkable local stone. Then it’s on to a short boat cruise across the beautiful Lake Mahinapua followed by lunch and a tree top walk along a steel causeway amongst ancient temperate rainforest giants such as Rimu and Tamahi. And all 20 metres above the forest floor. Then we continue south through Ross and Hari Hari to Franz Josef where you can take a short helicopter flight up to the Franz Josef Glacier and step onto this amazing force of nature. What a way to finish an enriching day experiencing the West Coast environment. Day 5: After a night at Franz Josef we continue south to picturesque Lake Matheson, the most photographed lake in New Zealand and with unparalleled views of Fox Glacier, Mt Tasman and Aoraki/Mt Cook, all from across Lake Matheson itself, it’s no wonder why. After a cuppa we head south again and into the UNESCO World Heritage Area that is Haast. At this point we leave the main highway, stay with the coast road and arrive at magnificent Jackson Bay, on the edge of Mt Aspiring National Park, for a glorious waterfront lunch at The Cray Pot. After lunch and a look around, we return to the highway and head through the Haast Pass towards Lakes Wanaka and Hawea. Tonight, we stay on the shores of Lake Dunstan. Day 6: Today we first head up the eastern side of Lake Dunstan to Tarras at the foot of the Lindis Pass for a cuppa before crossing Hawea Flat to high country Glen Dene Station. Bound by Lake Hawea in the east and Lake Wanaka in the west, Glen Dene is 15,000 acres with extensive panoramas back towards the Southern Alps. Our hosts, Lesley and Jerry Burdon, will tell us about their property and give us lunch. We can also enjoy their extensive garden. Later we enjoy a scenic drive along the shores of Lake Wanaka to Glendhu Bay before stopping at Warbirds & Wheels, an aviation and classic car museum next to Wanaka airport. Another fabulous day of vistas and destinations. Day 7: Today we say farewell to the South and take the easy way home by flying from Queenstown to Hawke’s Bay. On this tour we’ll spend a week immersed in the very heart of some of the more isolated parts of the South Island getting to know the Westland, Haast and Hawea districts. An intoxicating mix of natural wonder and southern hospitality punctuated by some of the most breath-taking scenery New Zealand can offer. And that’s saying something! Join us and enjoy all the pampering and attention to detail you’ve come to expect from Bay Tours on this ‘Bucket-List’ tour. | 15

This occurs in November when gardens are looking beautiful. The excitement of the day is added to by not knowing the list of properties to be visited until the day. The types of homes vary, ranging from traditional to contemporary. We've been offering Tour Club members the opportunity to support this vital regional facility for a number of Holly Trails now and the collaborative creativity displayed by property owners in conjunction with garden and interior designers is always thrilling. We think that six or seven days is an ideal time span for a first cruise and there can’t be any more convenient and enticing a destination than Tasmania. On many peoples ‘bucket list’ of places to see, Tasmania is a place of wild and beautiful landscapes and friendly people with a relaxed island lifestyle. A haunting history and world-class food and wine further adds to the attraction of Australia’s smallest state. In November 2018 we’re heading to Sydney to embark aboard the newest addition to the Princess Cruise fleet – the fabulous Majestic Princess. | 17
Launched in June 2017 and with 15 restaurants and cafes, 9 bars, 5 pools and multiple show and performance spaces to choose from plus a shopping precinct, wellness spa, health club, library and many more specialist activity zones, Majestic Princess offers a seemingly endless daily schedule of events and happenings. Day 1: We fly from Napier to Sydney via Auckland. On arrival we’ll enjoy a tour of the city as part of our transfer from the airport to our central city hotel. Day 2: A city always looks different from the water, whether it’s a harbour or a river, so we’re taking a Sydney Harbour Cruise this morning, then an afternoon free so you can explore at leisure. Day 3: This morning there’s the chance for any last-minute shopping or sightseeing before we transfer from the hotel to the Sydney Cruise Terminal at Circular Quay and check in to our floating hotel for the next 7 days and nights – the Majestic Princess. Day 4: At Sea. A chance to explore the ship more thoroughly and discover what will become your favourite spots. Day 5: Port Arthur: Site of Australia’s most brutal and feared penal colony, Port Arthur is now a World Heritage Site with most of what was then a state-of-the-art hard labour prison preserved. But its isolation has also meant little interference from humans with the local bush and wildlife. Perhaps take a shore excursion that includes a visit to Tasmanian Devil Unzoo where you can see all manner of Australian marsupials including the legendary Tasmanian Devil itself. Day 6 & 7: Today we continue to cruise towards Tasmania’s capital Hobart arriving around 7.30pm. We’re in port until 5.00pm the following day. So, go ashore any time or book a shore excursion for the old historic town, Royal Botanic Gardens, Queens Domain, the Derwent Valley or make a day of it visiting one of the many attractions within reach of Hobart. Day 8: Wineglass Bay & Oyster Bay (scenic cruising) Jutting out on a peninsula from the eastern mainland of Tasmania is the magnificent Freycinet National Park. Within the Park are two gorgeous bays, best seen from the sea. The sapphire coloured waters, velvety white sand and dramatic scenery of these bays is legendary. Look out for whales traversing the area. Day 9: At Sea. We return north towards Sydney. A last chance to enjoy the multitude of activities, venues or entertainments to be had on your floating home. Day 10: Today we dock back in Sydney early in the morning. Say farewell to new-found friends amongst both the passengers and your wonderful crew before we disembark and transfer directly to Sydney airport and our flights home to ‘the Bay’. 18 |

Tour No. 1201 Grand Circle Train Journey Date Saturday 1st – Monday 3rd December Times All collected by 1.15pm Cost $970.00 Twin Share | $1185.00 Single Room Payment $300.00 upon booking, balance due Monday 1st October Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast x2, lunch, dinner x2, accommodation x2, train ticket, all activities What great fun we've had over the last few years with our vintage train outings. A couple of years ago the destination was the Whanganui area. Last time we traversed the Manawatu Gorge and the Tararua district. This time we take that journey further...... There's something special about a vintage train. The beautifully polished wooden interiors, the “clickety-clack of the train on the track” and the sounds and smells of the thoroughbred locomotive thundering ahead of us. Sadly, the age of wide spread passenger rail appears to have passed in New Zealand. But you can relive the days when people 'took the train' with us on this very special pre- Christmas journey. The train includes a Cafe saloon and washrooms. We're joining the train at Palmerston North early, so we'll travel down the afternoon before and stay the night at the lovely Copthorne Hotel. Once aboard we head, once again through the Manawatu Gorge. This remains the only way through and likely to stay that way for some time. It's always interesting to survey the latest damage to the old road from the other side of the river. Then it's on down through Woodville and Pahiatua before we stop at Opaki for a special Christmas Buffet Lunch at the Paper Road Winery Bistro. After a superb lunch we re-board the train and it's on down through the beautiful rolling South Wairarapa countryside past towns like Carterton and Featherston and then through the mighty Rimutakas. This mountain range proved very challenging to take a railway line through. The first line was completed in 1878 and for 77 years the Fell system of using a third centre rail for extra grip was used to haul trains up and over the summit. This was, by far, the longest lived Fell rail service in the world. In 1955 a new route was completed which includes a 9km long tunnel. Once we're into the Hutt Valley we pass through Upper Hutt and directly alongside the famous Trentham Racecourse and St Patrick's College, Silverstream. Soon we criss- cross the fast-flowing Hutt River and enter the outer suburbs of Hutt City and then Petone before following the water's edge around Wellington Harbour, past Westpac Stadium and finally into the grand Wellington Railway Station in the late afternoon where our rail journey terminates. We stay the night in Wellington at Rydges Hotel, a stone throw from the station, before heading home to Hawke's Bay the following day. This is an extremely rare opportunity to ride a vintage train through the Manawatu, Tararua, Wairarapa and Wellington districts including the formidable Rimutaka Range. Those who have experienced our past rail journeys will know how enjoyable they are and how much fun is had by all. Add in a special Christmas lunch along the way and this all adds up to a hugely satisfying day for everyone. THIS WILL BE POPULAR! So, book your place while you can. 20 |

Tour No. 1224 Bay of Islands – Merry Christmas! Date Monday 24th December – Monday 31st December Times All collected by 8.00am Cost $2995.00 Twin Share | $3995.00 Single Room Payment $500.00 upon booking, balance due Friday 19 October Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast x7, morning tea x2, lunch x3, dinner x7, accommodation x7, all planned activities Our Christmas trip away is usually to a mystery destination but this year we feel the destination, and our plans once there, warrant giving the game away because we’ve never experienced the Bay of Islands in all its summer glory before and also because it takes a bit of getting there. The two days of travel each way means that the Christmas trip will be a little longer than most other years. But we think the relaxed spirit, historic significance and sheer beauty of the place makes it well worthwhile. It’s been a few years since the warming balmy breezes of ‘The Winterless North’ have beckoned us and we can resist the pull of the Bay of Islands no longer. 8 days of relaxed fun and sunshine focussed around this sub-tropical playground paradise is just the thing for the coming festive season. Here’s a taste of what’s in store; Day 1 Christmas Eve: Hawke’s Bay to Auckland We set out on our summer adventure heading north and stay at the fabulous Waipuna Hotel. Day 2 Christmas Day: Auckland to Bay of Islands After a special festive day breakfast, we continue northwards. A brief stop in pretty Warkworth for a cuppa and then it’s onward to a special picnic spot at Langs Beach for lunch. A trip into the Far North wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Kawakawa for ice cream and the famous Hundertwasser toilets before we arrive at our base for the next 4 days, the wonderful Kingsgate Autolodge in Paihia, right in the heart of the Bay of Islands. Situated right on the beachfront just 3 minutes’ walk from the village and the wharf, the Kingsgate is perfect for our stay. This evening we’ll enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. Day 3: Paihia and The Bay This morning walk to Marsden Wharf and board the ‘Bay Explorer’ to cruise through the bay and out to the famous ‘Hole-In- The-Rock’ where the open ocean meets us at Cape Brett. On the way, our skipper will be looking out for the opportunity for us to interact with the schools of dolphin that playfully follow our boat. We have lunch on the stunning Urupukapuka Island where afterwards you can swim in the warm crystal-clear water of the bay, walk to the top of the island for panoramic views, or simply relax on the lawn or the beach. We return to Paihia around 1.30pm and you have the rest of the afternoon free to explore. 22 |
Day 4: Paihia to Cape Reinga We spend the day taking the custom-built Dune Rider coach to the very northern tip of the North Island, Cape Reinga. What a thrill to speed along the sands of Ninety Mile Beach and power through the streams and gullies around the giant sand dunes south of the Cape. Visit Gumdiggers Park and learn the history of the local pioneers and have an early dinner at the famous Mangonui Fish Shop. What a day out! Day 5: Kerikeri & Russell This morning we visit the famous Stone Store and Kemp House – the oldest building in New Zealand – in Kerikeri. Then after a relaxing couple of hours back at the hotel we take the ferry across the Bay to historic Russell, NZ’s first Capital. There we’re given a guided tour by locals which includes Christ Church (NZ’s oldest), Flagstaff Hill where Hone Heke cut the flagpole down, and Pompallier House where the first printing press was established by Catholic monks. This evening we enjoy a buffet dinner cruise up the Waitangi River to magnificent Haruru Falls. Day 6: FREE DAY Phew! After all the activities, sights and sounds we’ve experienced over the last few days you’ll be pleased to be able to just relax with a day at your leisure. Perhaps a day at one of the 3 golden sand beaches within a 10-minute walk of the hotel. Maybe a walk to the historic and beautifully preserved Waitangi Treaty Grounds featuring Busby’s House, the Centennial Meeting House and Hobson’s Beach. A ferry across to Russell for a relaxed beachfront lunch, perhaps. Or simply relax by the hotel pool with views across the Bay. Just enjoy the summer atmosphere here in this sub-tropical wonderland. Day 7: Bay of Islands to Auckland Today we begin our journey home via the Hokianga and west coast of Northland. After morning tea at Opononi, famous for Opo The Dolphin who entertained beachgoers there in the mid-50’s, we visit the giant kauri tree Tane Mahuta deep in the Waipoua Forest. Then it’s on to Matakohe for lunch and the Kauri Museum there. After lunch we follow the huge Kaipara Harbour back to Auckland for the night. Day 8: Auckland to Hawke’s Bay Today we return home to Hawke’s Bay with wonderful memories of a Christmas in the North and perhaps a tan as well. The Bay of Islands and the districts around it can rightfully be called ‘The cradle of our nation’. It is where the New Zealand we know today began to take shape. Places like Russell, Waitangi, Kerikeri and Paihia remain prominent in our country’s brief history and the opportunity to visit the area is rare. Add to this the wonderful summer climate of the Far North and it’s obvious why the Bay of Islands is such a magnet for visitors. Join us for a very special Christmas break this year. Feel like you’d want a little longer to relax in the beautiful Bay of Islands? Then read Tour 1225 about extending your stay. | 23
