Welcome to Bay Tours & Charters Leisure Guide Even though the sun is shining outside today, the temperature betrays the season. This is the first Leisure Guide we’ve created in our new premises here in Turner Place, Onekawa. With views north across Prebensen Drive towards the ranges, our office sits across the cul-de-sac from the yard where we park our coaches. We’re delighted to be in our new home and invite you to visit us at some point. Another new and exciting presence in the lives of Ken and I is our first grandchild Walker (pictured with us here). This beautiful little boy arrived a little before Christmas and is the first child for our oldest son, Blair, and his wife Amanda. They live in the U.S.A. so we cherish the times we get to be with them. This first 6 months of 2019 has been extremely busy with fantastic trips and tours. In summer we were cycling around the Tasman/Nelson district and what a great time we had with a fun group of Tour Clubbers. We finally got to Molesworth Station in April after weather conditions delayed the visit twice. It really is an awesome ‘Big Sky’ experience which we definitely intend to repeat soon. Our years of experience travelling there adds another dimension. In May this year a group of us travelled to Sydney for their increasingly famous ‘Vivid’ light festival. The creativity of some of the illumination designs will live long in the memory. A new experiment earlier this year was tailoring the progressive meal concept to the evening. Our first Progressive Dinner was hugely popular and, as you’ll see, we’ve created another in this edition – along with the fantastic lunches. Looking forward, we’re immensely proud of the range and quality of the trips and tours in this edition of the Leisure Guide. Amongst a plethora of exciting events to look out for brand new experiences such as the highly original A Trip Into The Old American West and Sunshine Coast Escape. Incidentally, there is only one room left on the latter so if you’re mulling over this tour as the winter cold bites, don’t delay. We’ve been very fortunate to secure premium tickets for the Queen Concert in Wellington in February. This will be an amazing experience and tickets to the concert are nearly all gone for public sale. In this edition is the first appearance of our Alaska cruise and Rocky Mountaineer train double-header next May. This is as ‘Bucket-list’ as it gets so check it out. Also look out for the return of our South Island High Country Experience tour first taken in 2017. With the addition of new destinations this tour will be a must. Firm favourites Christmas Mystery Getaway, Great Barrier Island and The Chatham Islands also make a return with the latter two very limited in numbers. Our lives continue to be enriched by the experiences we have with all our Tour Club friends and Ken and I thank you for your ongoing support. We are committed to delivering original, exciting and wide-ranging tours and trips characterised by the personalised service of Bay Tours. We hope you enjoy perusing this latest edition and we look forward to seeing you on a tour soon. Kerren, Ken and the Bay Tours team. 2|

Tour No 1014 Kapiti Island & Coast Date Monday 14th – Thursday 17th October Times All collected by 8.45am Cost $1,445.00 Twin Share | $1,745.00 Single Room Payment $500 upon booking, balance due by Thursday 15th August Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast x3, morning tea x4, dinner x3, accommodation x3, lunch x4, all activities In October it will be three years, almost to the day, since we last visited magnificent Kapiti Island. Notable historically as the stronghold of Ngāti Toa chief Te Rauparaha, it has also been home to whaling stations and was, in the latter half of the 19th Century, cleared for livestock farming. Since 1897 conservationists have worked to gradually return the island to its original splendour. Today Kapiti Island is one of New Zealands' most valuable nature reserves and most important bird sanctuaries. Burgeoning numbers of smaller birds like kakariki (red-crowned parakeet), robin, bellbird, saddleback and stitchbird join kokako, takahe, kereru (NZ wood pigeon), kaka and weka in abundance on the island. Other birds – like the little spotted kiwi – are now extinct on the mainland and yet thrive on Kapiti. Basing ourselves at lovely Paraparaumu Beach, our tour will include a full day spent on Kapiti Island hosted and guided by local experts. But it’s not just about the visit to the Island on this trip; Day 1: Today we travel south & enjoy a glorious lunch at one of our favourite cafes, Quarter Acre, on the way and settle into our lovely accommodation at Paraparaumu Beach. Day 2: We spend the day on Kapiti Island starting with bio-security procedures before our boat trip to the island itself. The day will include guided walks, time for independent wandering, a talk on the history of the island, lunch at the lodge etc. Day 3: We’re heading south today, to Zealandia Sanctuary in Wellington. After lunch we take in the remarkable Southwards Car Museum. The largest private car collection in the southern hemisphere. Day 4: Today we head home, but not before visiting Lavender Creek Farm to sample all their lavender products. Then it’s a tour and a delicious lunch at famous chef Ruth Pretty’s Springfield Cooking School at Te Horo. This much-loved tour is special to us here at Bay Tours. The collaboration of D.O.C. and local iwi makes Kapiti Island unique. It promises to be a highlight for all those interested in our country’s natural environment. Accommodation limitations mean this will fill quickly. Don’t delay in booking your place. 14 |
Tour No. 1023 A Trip Into The Old American West Date Wednesday 23rd – Thursday 24th October Times All collected by 8.45am Cost $675.00 Twin Share | $785.00 Single Room Payment $250.00 upon booking (non-refundable), balance due by Thursday 8th August Price includes Door to door transport, breakfast x1, morning tea x2, lunch x1, afternoon tea x1, dinner x1, accommodation x1, all activities Most Kiwis who have been around for a while will recall a time when the movies and later television were dominated by the genre of the Western. A simple, romanticised image of America’s pioneering push west where good guys and bad guys faced off in the dusty main streets of isolated towns with itchy trigger fingers inching closer to pistols in their holsters and horses hitched to the rail. We can all fondly picture stars of the silver screen such as Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Randolph Scott, and later Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford. Leading ladies like Grace Kelly, Vera Miles, Doris Day and Katherine Ross brought a touch of glamour whilst waiting for their man to come home or being the feisty, yet warm-hearted, store owner or bar girl. We loved the Western because it was easy to cheer for the hero knowing that the villain would get ‘what was coming to him’. Who didn’t imagine themselves in a scene from one of those movies or TV shows at some point? But did you know that right here in New Zealand there’s a complete American Old West town populated with cowboys, store owners, bartenders, western ladies and yes, even a sheriff. The central North Island is home to Mellonsfolly Ranch, a meticulously recreated Old West town where anyone can be a cowboy or girl for a day amongst the locals who are ‘living the dream’. We invite you to join us as we ‘ride into town’ (albeit in a coach) and take over Mellonsfolly Ranch for a day. Wander the main street and look in on Clinton’s Billiard Saloon, Texas Rose’s Bathhouse, The Lucky Strike Saloon, the General Store and Miss Nancy Ann’s Hotel Parlour & Library and a Western Costume Room where you can be fully kitted out in Western garb complete with hooped skirts and bonnets or holster and a replica Colt or Smith & Wesson 45 pistol (air gun). We’ll enjoy a traditional cookhouse cowboy lunch and, if you choose, participate in optional activities like horse-shoe pitching, archery, gun-slinging, target shooting and even firing a Civil War period cannon. Or relax on the front porch of the saloon and enjoy some Western movie time. This is a unique and fun opportunity to turn the clock back and, for a day, fulfil your youthful dream of being part of a Western. Yes, it’s silly. No, it’s not sensible. That’s the whole point. How many opportunities are there in today’s world to embrace the inner child still there in all of us? To ensure our experience is unhurried we’ll spend the night before our day in the Old West at the appropriately log-clad Powderhorn Chateau at Ohakune. Come join the Bay Tours posse as we mosey on over to Mellonsfolly Ranch. | 15
Tour No 1106 Progressive Pub Lunch Date Wednesday 6th November Times All collected by 11.15am Cost $115.00 Payment Full payment upon booking please Price includes Door to door transport, 3 course lunch A variation on our popular progressive Lunch series sees us visit three of the best ‘Gastro- pubs’ in Hawke’s Bay. They share a passion for quality traditional pub food using the freshest local ingredients and never losing sight of the timeless simplicity of dishes historically served in quality pubs and taverns. First up for our Entrée we travel to The Puketapu Pub on the way to the Dartmoor Valley. This former staging point has been feeding and watering man and beast for more than 130 years. From here we wind our way east to Havelock North and the much-loved Rose & Shamrock Village Inn for our Main course. With its climbing roses and hanging baskets outside and wood panelled interior, its reputation for great food and hospitality is well founded. Dessert sees us head to the famed Duke Of Gloucester in Taradale. Their sweet treats are legendary and a wonderful way to finish an outstanding meal. From the arrival of Europeans into the central North Island in the mid-19th Century there are records of horses of various breeds escaping from the large inland Hawke's Bay stations into the vast 'desert' area of the Central Plateau. And over the last 150 years there's been a few deliberate releases of unwanted horses into the area as well from the old army cavalry units, farms and even the odd 'Desert Road drop-off'. The first recorded sighting of groups of wild horses around the Kaimanawa Ranges was as far back as 1876. Since 1993 there has been an annual muster in order to keep numbers down to around 300 horses which is the figure believed to allow the herd to remain viable whilst also preserving the delicate and unique environment they live in. Initially, all horses mustered were culled. The Kaimanawa Heritage Horse Trust (KHHT) was established to work with the Department of Conservation and other interested groups to find homes for as many of the mustered horses as possible. Hosted by the KHHT and the NZ Army, we will be guided into the heart of the territory of this unique breed of horse. With experts aboard our coach from both D.O.C. and KHHT, we'll set out from the NZ Army camp at Waiouru and make our way to the actual muster area by lunchtime with time to stop and observe the family groups of horses we come across along the way. After lunch, we'll head into the other side of the reserve to spot more roaming horses and experience this unique part of the country. Join us as we step into the world of New Zealand's only wild horse breed and see them in their breath-taking natural surroundings. An experience not to be missed. 18 |

The river remains the only way into their realm, so we head up the river by jet boat to the Lodge which sits high above a bend in the river with stunning views. It's a special part of our country where beautiful high cliff-like banks, cloaked in native bush, tower above this ancient waterway adding to the atmosphere of untouched isolation this district has. There's time during our stay to explore Joe & Mandy's farm with plenty of bush or river walks to enjoy. Traditional farmhouse cooking is on the menu as we enjoy the hospitality of the Lodge. Those who have participated will testify to the even greater level of organisation and care they experience. We’re very excited to present the Twin Coast Cycle Trail which stretches from the stunning Hokianga Harbour in the west to the glorious Bay of Islands in the east. As in past years we’ll be giving participants the option to take their own bike. This is a major logistical undertaking but has proven a very popular initiative and well worth the extra effort. Alternatively, we can arrange the hire of a bike for you if you prefer. There will be four days of gentle riding varying between 20 and 34 kilometres per day of panoramic coastal, forest and countryside vistas as we cycle the old disused railway corridors. We’ll pass historic early mission stations and early mills and factories, waterfalls and mangrove estuaries and cross spectacular suspension bridges. All this as we gently peddle between such places as Hokianga, Kaikohe, Kawakawa and Opua. But it won’t be all about the cycle trail. We’ll also visit the impressive Redwood Tree Walk in Rotorua on the way north and take in the glittering waters of the Bay Of Islands itself whilst we’re based in Paihia. Here’s a brief idea of the itinerary; Day 1: Hawke’s Bay – Rotorua After a hearty morning tea at Rangitaiki we’ll warm up for the northern trail with a short bike along the new cycle trail that leads west of ‘The Green Lake’ to the wonderful Redwoods Tree Walk where we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch, experience the Tree Walk itself and then carry on to the centre of Rotorua where we stay tonight. Day 2: Rotorua – Bay of Islands No biking today as we wend our way north with a stop at the incredible Puhoi Pub for lunch in this historic Bohemian settlement. We arrive in Paihia where we’ll be based for the next four nights. Day 3: Cycle Okaihau to Mangungu Mission Station (28kms) Historic churches, the beautiful Utakura Valley and a 1200m boardwalk over the mangrove estuary at Hōreke are highlights today. A picnic lunch at Mangungu on the shores of the glorious Hokianga harbour ends the ride before we return to Paihia to relax. Day 4: Cycle Okaihau to Kaikohe (14kms) & Kawakawa to Opua (11kms) Two easy rides today separated by a fine lunch in Kaikohe. The first stage takes us along the shores of Lake Omapere and into Kaikohe itself. After lunch we head to Kawakawa by coach before getting back on the bikes to ride firstly beside the historic railway line to Taumarere then on down to the pretty marina at Opua. Dinner tonight is at the legendary Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell. 24 |
Day 5: Cycle Kaikohe to Kawakawa (34kms) It’s back to Kaikohe this morning to ride east to Kawakawa. This is waterfalls and suspension bridges day. After leaving Kaikohe you’ll pass the largest grass aerodrome in the southern hemisphere and through rolling farmland and finishing at the railway station in Kawakawa. We relax with an afternoon sailing the tranquil Bay of Islands before dinner on beautiful Urupukapuka Island. Day 6: Bay of Islands – Auckland With the cycling done we begin our journey homeward, stopping in the historic Celtic settlement of Waipū before arriving at leafy Devonport in Auckland for lunch overlooking golden Cheltenham Beach and Rangitoto Island. A relaxed afternoon at Waipuna Hotel ends a fabulous sightseeing day. Day 7: Auckland – Hawke’s Bay An easy day heading home from Auckland with stops in Matamata and lunch in Taupo before we arrive back in ‘the Bay’ and the end of our wonderful cycle trail journey. The opportunity to follow trails laid through the heartland and stunning countryside of the Far North, a part of the country that resonates with history and natural beauty, is unique. Don’t miss this chance to be part of what will be an incredibly memorable adventure. Tour No 225 Kiwi Creche & Boundary Stream Date Tuesday 25th February Times All collected by 8.45am Cost $120.00 Payment As you board, money in an envelope with your name please. Price includes Door to door transport, morning tea, lunch Behind a predator-proof fence less than an hour north of Napier lies a special place to which Kiwi chicks are brought from the wild. In this 40-hectare pest-free area the chicks are nurtured in a native bush environment until they’re deemed able to defend themselves and can be returned to their primary habitat. The Kiwi safe haven surrounds the beautiful Lake Opouahi and we’re returning to meet some of the people helping raise the chicks and, fingers crossed, some of the chicks themselves. Later we head further up the valley to Boundary Stream for a delicious picnic lunch and the opportunity to walk into the past along accessible tracks through native bush. Watch the cheeky kaka birds feed and hear and observe the beautiful bellbird, North Island robin, tomtit, fantail, kereru (native wood pigeon) and the rare and magnificent kokako. On our way home, we’ll drop into the beautiful beach at Waipatiki for an ice cream. This is an all too rare opportunity to experience aspects of what New Zealand’s stunning native flora and fauna were like before exotic pests arrived. These are tranquil and precious places.
